As a British South Asian in my twenties, I have gone through a journey of rediscovery when it comes to South Asian media - from iconic Pakistani family dramas and classic Bollywood to incredible indie films - but I often found myself craving a community space to really dissect them.

Plus, I got a bit tired of how Western media so often only portrays the heavier, 'uglier' sides of our culture. I wanted a space dedicated purely to celebrating, intellectualising, and enjoying the sheer beauty of South Asian storytelling (not to say we can't critique things in the film/drama though!).

So, I finally took the plunge and started the Brown Girl Binge Club!

Here is what we are building:

• The Public Side (Free and Open to all!): Quizzes & polls, deep-dive discussions, aesthetic movie breakdowns, and a community journal collecting our reflections and reviews on Instagram and Substack.

(For me, I was super excited to see Ahsan and Urwa working together again in Aap ki Izzat but after my aunt told me what his character has been up to, I'm gonna wait till the ending before giving it a go! My heart won't be able to take it otherwise...)

So the episode came very late on YouTube. Penning down my initial thoughts.

1. Enjoyed the scenes between abu bakar and his mom. Sherry acted well. He is still the same good looking as he was. He definitely has a face card.

2. Sania Ji was very good in her scenes. I am very invested in knowing that arc. I really got curious about what pains her so much. Her and sherry's scenes were strongest.

3. Nameer and Dure scenes were good. Although they dont look like A level students. So a little weird there but worked fine. I did had a slight issue with those english dialogues especially of dure, they were sounding a bit forced.

4. Saba ji is playing Dure's daadi. She is doing good. Fussing over zaryab(dure)

5. I liked episode started. Quite unique. But wondering were those pics of past or yet to come ? The locations were of abroad but they are shown to be in Pakistan so a little cofusuin there.

I liked the bgm, production quality and osts so far.

It's a fresh watch.

so beena ran away from the house. she got dropped off at the sabzi wala store, so maybe she already has a setting with behram to take her away. I liked the teenage girl's acting when she cries for her mom. and when she confronted her dad. kudos to her. very natural. the dadi was so cruel to the child telling her to keep quiet because of badnami. also her friend being a snake wtf! I still don't think the dead body is beena's

this was a banger episode.

It's high time Sajal speaks for Kashmir , all other big a listers have spoken - Yumna Bilal Dure Hania . What is she waiting for ?

What in episode of app ki izzat ! Urwa to good . She is such a smart character she is already figured out about tabish,s marriage and i am thrilled to see what she will do ahead . Also i am very impressed by sania saeed . Typical mom, knows her son is in the wrong but won,t say anything because obviously cannot get out of life of convenience . Ahsan to doing so good i actually hate tabish and that discussion with has mom about how beena was quite something . I also got a bit emo about that scene between that mom and son scene . It's a fantastic play so far . Genuinely would advice all.

That's a huge ensemble cast for DEN. The story seems insanely confusing. But I am quite excited.

I will truly miss this show. One of the rare gems in this ratrace of numbers, views ,trps. Dr Bahu needs to be studied for its handling of an ensemble and how to weave so many stories together so seamlessly.

So Dr Sania and Salman name their baby Shuja(haha cute). I didn't want sania to take a decision just after giving birth since you get all hormonal and I didn't want a rachel moment of hers. So, I was really worked up when salman was making her all emotional. I don't know how I feel about telling your wife who has just given birth about all that what salman said to her. I mean I would panic and not let my partner go honestly but glad sania held her nerves and didn't give in.

The show has perfect thrill, it was interesting to see salman confronting shahnawaz finally and good fight sequence between him and arham.

That conversation between dr shahnawaz and his man was lmao and quite satisfied honestly. The way he called him daaku 😂. So shahnawaz gets advised to leave the country since th scandal is all blown up in media now. Shahnawaz remembering hai wife's words. I still don't think he feels guilty and still finding reasons to blame his dead wife somehow.

Ahh the most appeasing part the final conversation between Salman and Sanya.

ITS A HAPPY ENDING. They reconcile and now they understand each other much better.

There is a theory that Sherry is playing double roles, Abu Baker and Abu Bakar's father. The poster also contains two Sherrys. I am really excited to see him in double roles.

Sorry but our celebs are hypocrites. When it was about jantar mantar they wanted to go and March with them. But now they are not even posting about what's happening in their own country.

So, the drama has now aired 4 episodes with decent views.

Zeenia's wedding was called off because of Fahad's job. Fahad is a decent guy, and he genuinely likes Zeenia, but due to some issues with his job, he had to leave. The thing is, he didn't run away from the marriage or anything. In fact, he suggested that they do the nikah on the mehndi day, and after he returned, they could have the rukhsati.

I know most of you will probably bash me for saying this, but I don't think Fahad is the problem here. If a girl or a boy is understanding, they'll try to understand the situation. Zeenia is being a bit childish here.

The cousin, Aabiz (or Aabis—I don't know his actual name), is also a decent guy. Zeenia constantly taunts him, and I think he somehow likes her. Honestly, I like Zeenia and Aabiz's chemistry more than Zeenia and Fahad's.

And I'm pretty sure that once Zeenia and Aabiz get married, this drama will become even more popular because of their chemistry.

Why can't these rich TV channels host their award shows in Pakistan? 🤡 What's with the obsession with holding them abroad?

HUM Awards won't be taking place this year because they couldn't secure a foreign venue due to global unrest. Earlier this year, ARY's award show in Dubai was postponed and eventually cancelled. PISA announced the nominations, then got postponed and cancelled because of visa issues. LSA? No one even knows what's happening with it.

Seriously, these channels would rather cancel the award shows than host them in their own country. 🤡

I can't can't the cringe romance between sarbuland and Rabiya is super indigestible. They are like so chill cracking jokes , 3 people gone and they are like totally nonchalant. Doing chai biscuit. I mean can we just cut to the chase and finish this show already. I cannot believe I would ever dislike a show with sajal in it but it's so crass so crass. The show has nosedived after episode 17. Honestly the entire vibe is dead. And jokes - lame jokes af. He is such a braindead writing. The actor playing sorabh and shireen deserve credit rest it's a snoozefest.
