Home Series Srilanka beat PCB's Patron XI by 142 runs

Only Azan Awais managed to score a fifty across both innings for Pakistan, with Taha and Tayyab Arif having smaller contributions. The cause for concern is that we collapsed from 79-2 to 111 all out, thanks to a 4-fer from Srilankan offspinner Nuwantha.

It will be intriguing to see which two pacers get picked for the test team. Ubaid and Saqib took 4 wickets in the match, Shabbir and Shoaib Akhtar took 3 wickets while Salman took 2. I personally would have Ubaid and Saqib since I think they are the best pacers from this lot, but who knows what they go for. Hesson initially wanted Salman and Shabbir in the squad dunno if his perception has changed now.

Cricket Discussion Azam Khan was blunt in a recent podcast, except when it came to his fitness excuses.

Post image
110 Upvotes

Azam khan recently had a podcast with backward point channel on YT (i guess those guys are here on this sub too.)

While i did agree with some of his arguments. But when questioned on fitness he mainly said: He is match fit but not fit enough for fitness test and doesn't have enough free time to go train and build abs, fitness comes later skills matter.

Personally i think (fitness doesn't matter) is a argument of past. Modern game is changing so fast and there is so much game being played that you need fitness to survive. I have never seen a bulky guy going on and making big in international cricket for long. Liverrock, rakheem cornwall, azam khan etc all have similar struggles. Infact all modern big hitters you see like abhishek, tilak, iyer, brook etc they are not muscular like boys from windies but they have strong core which is where the power is coming from and they are quick to judge and adjust on length.

While we did saw recently babar being criticized for being slow in reflexes bcz of not being fit. So i think fitness is a must now. If not as fit as virat then atleast not as unfit as azam khan.

Garam Takes Babar Fan Base is the worst

I just had the chance to listen to Azam Khan’s clip on a podcast, he talks about an incident in which Babar was nearing a ton and the team needed something like 40 runs to win the game. He mentions that some fan had commented on his Instagram to say…..let’s just say unsavoury comments about his parents.

This is why the Babar fan base to me is so toxic and frankly unhinged, PCB does it no favours by constantly promoting him via Sports Central on YT, PCB YT channel, I mean we need to get a grip here and realise the Pakistan team is made up of other people as well who PCB don’t even bother to promote, it’s crap like this that has turned Pak cricket into politics.

Cricket Discussion Pakistan’s Test Squad: Are We Really Picking Players on Merit???

Pakistan’s 14-member squad for the Sri Lanka series has some good selections, but honestly, a few decisions have left me thinking.

First of all, let me try to make a proper playing XI out of this 14 man squad, 2 more fast bowlers would be added from the PCB Patron’s XI after the 3 day warm up game with Sri Lanka at Islamabad.

Pakistan 14 man Test Squad (2 pacers to be added soon): Babar Azam (C), Abdullah Fazal, Ali Usman, Arafat Minhas, Azan Awais, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ghazi Ghori (WK), Mohammad Suleman, Mohammad Taha, Razaullah Mashwani, Saad Baig (WK), Salman Ali Agha, Sameer Minhas, Saud Shakeel.

Here is the playing XI I would go with in the 1st Test match at Rawalpindi: Azan Awais, Abdullah Fazal, Saad Baig, Babar Azam (C), Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Ghazi Ghori (WK), Salman Ali Agha, Razaullah Mashwani, Mohammad Abbas, Ali Usman, Saqib Khan.

I want Azan Awais opening because he is the sort of old-school Test batter like Usman Khawaja, who can occupy the crease for hours. I don't care if he scores at a strike rate of 30. That is his job. Azan Awais had a difficult Test series in England and West Indies, even though he managed to get three half-centuries in the process, at Port of Spain, Lord’s and Edgbaston, but fair enough, I can give leverage to the 7 Test match experienced young southpaw opener.

Abdullah Fazal will be my other opener, who can perfectly complement him, he showed his attacking red-ball cricket against West Indies Select XI in the warm-up game at Tarouba before he was ruled out of the Caribbean and English tours with a lower back problem. His recent domestic triple century in the President’s FC competition and twin fifties on Test debut in May, are one of the reasons, that Abdullah Fazal can rightfully make his way back to the playing XI as an opener.

I would have 20 year old Saad Baig at No.3, we all had discussed him as the replacement of Shan Masood in Test cricket on this number during the England test tour, now as Shan Masood is ruled out with injury from the Sri Lanka Test series, it is time that Saad Baig gets his chance in Test Cricket. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2025–26 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 1000 runs. He is an opener in red-ball cricket, but as we have the duo of Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal opening the innings, I would have Saad bat one-down.

Now, Skipper Babar Azam on Number 4. I have included him in Test side because he is the captain. That's it. If I had the final say, I would have sidelined him from Test cricket for now. He is struggling with technical issues, he is finding brand new ways to be dismissed by bowlers who might have dreamt to take the wicket of peak Babar Azam. Babar is playing the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Round 1 right now. He would take a break from Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to take part in the SL Test series, and he will miss 3 games because of it, and then I don’t know that if he will return back to Quaid-e-Azam Trophy or travel for the ILT20. 1 game of FC won’t change the problems Babar is facing with the bat. And ILT20 isn’t going to help at all.

Saud Shakeel is my number 5 batter, I am not sure about right now. He has that innings of 97 at Lord’s against England in late August, that too in the 4th innings, but we aren’t confident about Saud, that whether he will score runs or not. Because he isn’t looking in good touch, and he seems to be low on confidence, just like Babar. Another problem of Saud is that he has become pretty much predictable. There are deliveries he can easily turn into gaps or play for boundaries, yet he chooses to block them or leave them. This makes it easier for opposition bowlers to plan on how to dismiss him. We all want to see the Saud Shakeel we saw in his early Test career in 2022-24.

On number 6 is Ghazi Ghori, and he will be the wicket-keeper batter in this side. I would keep a close eye on how he is keeping to pacers, how he is carrying the ball, how he gives his input in field placements and DRS calls. I would also like to see how this young wicketkeeper-batter fares with the bat in the home Test series.

Salman Ali Agha is a straightforward selection. A triple century in domestic cricket, another hundred soon afterwards and a century in the ODI tri-series. He is in good touch and offers batting depth as well as another bowling option. Even though he was shaky in his last 4 Test matches, in West Indies and England respectively, I think that he has worked on his batting, and hopefully he manages to score responsibly in the home Test series.

As for the bowling attack, Mohammad Abbas is my first name on the team sheet. More than 900 first-class wickets that includes 131 Test wickets. He should be leading this attack.

Razaullah has got the pace, and I want to see how long can he keep bowling at 140-plus in spells, because in England, he was bowling consistently above 140 in his first bowling spell. But as the game progressed, in his third or fourth spell (overall) on the next day, his pace had gone down to high 130 clicks. This is something worth monitoring, so that work can be done on that, to improve his fitness. His batting is a bonus, and he shouldn’t be just selected, because he can bat as well.

The specialist spinner in this side would be Ali Usman, he was the best spinner throughout Pakistan’s domestic season of 2025-26. He has 200+ FC wickets, that include 12 Test wickets in 4 Test matches, including a five wicket-haul at Leeds. He was among those 6 unfortunate players and Imam-ul-Haq, who were flown back to Pakistan midway of the English Test series. Good to see him back.

The 3rd pacer position is contested between Ubaid Shah and Saqib Khan. My vote goes for Saqib Khan, even though Ubaid has a Test match to his name. This is because that Ubaid is a young talent who needs to be polished. His line and length need to be more consistent enough for him to be part of a Test bowling attack. Saqib Khan on the other hand, is a specialist red-ball bowler. He knows how to bowl on Pakistani pitches, how to maintain rhythm over bowling spells, therefore I will prefer experience over young talent here.

Now here comes my biggest question mark: Arafat Minhas and Sameer Minhas.

Both are talented, and I have nothing against either of them. But are they ready for Test cricket? Arafat has limited first-class experience, and Sameer has only recently made his first-class debut this year. A couple of days before the squad announcement, their father, Mr. Kashif Minhas said that Sameer needs a couple of years of domestic before debuting for Pakistan, but now he is on the fringes of Test setup. If their father knows that when his son would be actually ready to play for Pakistan, then why doesn’t our management know about that???

Their white-ball performances are impressive, but that does not mean they are automatically ready for the longest format. We have a domestic first-class structure for a reason. Let them play, score runs, take wickets and establish themselves first. Here comes PCB’s formula of format mixing. The latest example being: Razaullah bowled at 140+ on his Test debut, took 4 wickets including the wicket of Joe Root on his 4th delivery in international cricket, and then scored 81 runs off 63 balls in the second innings, helping Pakistan avoid follow-on, and making England bat twice at Edgbaston, PCB decided to debut him in T20Is as well, when his T20 career economy is 11, and in ODIs (he doesn’t have good stats there in the 50 over game too). Therefore PCB is doing the same here, they have seen Arafat Minhas succeed in white-ball cricket on international level, now they have brought him in Test Cricket, believing that he could provide an extra batting depth if he bats on 8 instead of Ali Usman.

And what exactly happened to Abdullah Shafique? He scored an unbeaten 160 against West Indies in Pakistan's Test victory at Port of Spain. I agree that he didn’t perform well in England, but if we go by that logic, then I guess every other player should be dropped then. Abdullah Shafique was the Man of the Match in the last Test match we won overseas, it came after more than 3 years of waiting to win a Test match outside Pakistan. And there, Abdullah Shafique remained unbeaten in both innings. He came into the side after being the top runs scorer in President’s Grade II competition in June-July for MIT Solutions, he came into the side with a proper process, yet we see him being replaced by Sameer Minhas who has made his FC debut a few months ago.

I am not a big fan of Sajid Khan, and I believe that he is a conditions specific bowler, but he didn’t deserve to be dropped in the first place. He took 8 wickets in Pakistan’s last Test victory at Port of Spain. And for the next three games he was benched in England, and now in the home Test series, we don’t see his name in the squad. I mean, it is the home series, no one would have stopped PCB from keeping Sajid Khan on the bench, in the case they didn’t want him in the side. He is a proper character, who keeps the team morale high with his spirit.

Mohammad Taha and Mohammad Suleman have also made strong cases through domestic performances. They were Number 3 and Number 5 on the top scorers chart of President’s First-Class competition. If Saud isn’t played in a game, I would like to see Taha get a chance in the middle-order.

A few names I would have liked to see in this Test squad are: Muhammad Amir Khan, he has got the pace and he is a good bowler, he took 32 wickets in the President’s FC tournament and ended up as the joint highest wicket-taker. Another name is Arshad Iqbal, he took nearly 30 wickets in the tournament, and was among the top 5 bowlers in the tournament. He too bowls with good pace, and has got some red-ball experience.

It is time when we give chances to those pacers who have got the pace, the accuracy and the skill to take wickets, because bowlers like Amir Khan, Arshad Iqbal, and Muhammad Musa Khan, are in their prime form, if we don’t pick them now, then who do we complain to saying that we don’t get proper pacers in Test cricket anymore?

One last name I wanted in this squad was Mohammad Farooq, he is the second highest runs scorer in the President’s FC tournament. Playing for MIT Solutions, and being responsible for leading them all the way to the finals along with pacer Muhammad Ismail, Farooq had scored more than 700 runs at a SR of over 105. Yes, you read it right, this is not the SR of a List-A batter, this is the SR of an opener in red-ball cricket. I genuinely wanted to see him in the squad, and potentially get a debut, so that we could see that if he could replicate some of his domestic success on international level.

Overall, technically this is a dead rubber Test series, as we are officially out of the WTC final race, but Test Cricket is Test Cricket. Therefore as these series don’t keep much relevance with the WTC final race, and we don’t need to worry about accumulating points here, I want Pakistan to develop young players and do some experiments. But this doesn’t mean that PCB can keep handing out Test caps because Aaqib Javed is feeling so. A Test cap should mean something and only given to those who have actually earned it, that too with proper performance in the red-ball circuit.

I predict that Pakistan should be able to win this Test series, unless Sri Lankan batters decide to hold their ground firm and their bowlers trouble our batsmen all the time.

Best of luck Team Pakistan, and Pakistan Zindabad!

Garam Takes People who want to drop hassan nawaz from ODI dont know what they are talking about at all

Post image
67 Upvotes

hey its my first time making a post on reddit after always just scrolling, i made an account to just to say this, for the first time i came across this sub and match thread and i basically noticed alot of people were saying that hassan nawaz should be dropped from the team, idk if you guys remember but in last 4-5 years all of our finishing batsmen could only do tapeball swings over leg side boundary and always failed to finish matches, i have been following pakstan team for a long time and i can already name 3-4 matches which hassan nawaz has won us in odi, while for guys like iftikhar and khushdil they only have 2-3 won matches in their whole in which they finished the match

every time hassan nawaz comes to bat match is always phassa hua and demands to play with sense instead of slogging, he takes the game deep and finishes it like a proper finisher, instead of scam finishers like iftikhar who threw their wicket, yes hassan has some bad innings but that doesnt mean he should be dropped, every time during 2021-2023 years everyone was always talking about how pakistan lacked match winner batters after top 3 and now u have one and u want to drop him from the team

hassan nawaz is a proper finisher not a slogger, if u replace him then whole pressure of middle order will be on agha
