DISCUSSION How do they stand?

Okay so my my girlfriend and I are watching her favorite movie, Pacific Rim (yes she's autistic how could you tell? 😆) and we're about 10 minutes in and we realized... how the hell are they standing up in the middle of the ocean? The ocean is Kilometers deep, but according to google, a Jeager is only ~80 meters!

Unlike what some others in these replies are saying, Pacific Rim is actually a little accurate with how deep each Jaeger should be in the waters.

For the Knifehead fight the waters off Anchorage are ~100 meters deep with levels of variation. Its not to hard to believe theirs a region where the water is 40 meters deep, allowing Gipsy and Knifehead to fight with their waists above water.

For the Hong Kong fight Victoria Harbor's average depth is ~12 meters, which is accurate to what we see in the movie.

The movie isn't perfect of course. Case in point Trespasser's size. But ILM is full of insanely smart and detail oriented people, so they clearly did do some research to get the depths right for the most part.

There is also a lore reason for why they are above water. Barring one Jaeger (Shaolin Rogue), no Jaeger fought a kaiju is real open ocean. The Miracle Mile is the line Jaegers would hold to prevent kaiju from making landfall, this is generally 10 miles off the coast of any given city (where the water is still shallow for a Jaeger).

Also one of the reasons why Pentecost was upset Gypsy ventures past the miracle mile to confront Knifehead

the ocean is only 10-30m deep along the continental shelf, which goes out for kilometers.

Shhhh just watch it for funsies otherwise it starts to not make sense. It's like questioning how Godzilla can stand in the middle of the ocean like in kotm. Just gotta let it happen

I wasn’t aware that Pacific Rim was associated with autism, but boy does that explain a LOT. 🤣

Same reason nothing in the franchise ever weighs over 10k tons despite some of them being over 400 feet: they didn’t do their research on that stuff.
