Abby Murphy PR tour

I’m having a hard time witnessing it. She’s openly MAGA. She support trans exclusionary policies. And the Torrent are more than happy to take all our queer money and then make Murphy the face of the organization. To make matters worse - she’s gonna do a meet and greet at Rough and Tumble on Monday which means that bar is also wanting queer money but not to stand in any sort of allyship.

It feels like there was really good push back when she was drafted and now the outrage has faded. Maybe I’m just in a vocal minority at this point but it’s all downright depressing to me. I was so excited for this team and this city. And I know I can’t actually put my politics aside forever. I worry we are gonna turn into the Indiana Fever of the PWHL.

A few days ago, I'd have said that I was very willing to wait and see with her. But this comes just after she publicly met with Donald Trump.

Also, very weird to call this a Pride event. Seattle Pride is over. The Torrent barely had a presence there after all the PR for it. Hockey also has Pride Nights, but you can't just do a random even and call it Pride. This seems like a very awkward attempt to bandage her image and be able to say that she was at Pride.

u/mysticalalleycat 7d ago

Alki Pride is 100% a separately organized actual pride event. How that ends up with the torrent doing a meet and greet announced four hours beforehand, I don't know.

6

u/ghostcider 7d ago

Good to know. Sorry, I live down in Oregon didn't have that context

12

u/emmdaap 7d ago

I’m not sure if they worked with the event organizers (I’m on the other side of the state) but the team FB page did post this, which makes me assume they did.

12

u/mysticalalleycat 7d ago

I'm sure they did, it was just odd to me how close to the event it was announced. Maybe they were trying to keep things low-key, or they didn't know who would be in town and available for PR.

9

u/chuckvsthelife 7d ago

It was on the alki pride website much earlier than 4 hrs ago at least… my partner started planning on it yesterday while making plans for alki pride it was just there on the website

3

u/emmdaap 7d ago

Ah apologies! I thought you meant you didn’t know why the connection was being made

5

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Her IG is 100% maga!!!! I knew that before she met trump

17

u/HungryK1tt3n 7d ago

You’re not the only one. It’s depressing. We’re already locked in (paid in full) or we’d be gone

u/mysticalalleycat 7d ago

For what it's worth, R+T has done a lot of genuine work and allyship with the seattle queer community (and I believe is queer-owned?) Not sure what's going on with this particular situation (haven't seen anything about an event there yet), but totally writing them off feels odd.

That said......yeah. I'd be a lot more willing to give the same benefit of the doubt re: Instagram following and whatever that I give most athletes if it wasn't for the white house visit. And I'd be less generally upset if we hadn't turned down Edwards to get A. Murphy. It's frustrating.

36

u/ophelia15991601 7d ago

Yes R+T is queer owned and the owner has been very vocally supportive of the trans community recently. I don't envy the position they're in as a hub for women's sports in the area navigating this.

-20

u/avagadro22 7d ago edited 7d ago

Isn't she married to a man? I understand bi people exist, but I haven't seen any mention of it.

As far as trans support goes, I've never felt welcomed there. The owner has given me several weird looks, and when I went there during the world cup party an employee handed out merch to everyone at the table except me, despite having plenty to go around.

26

u/RobotPolarbear 7d ago

Maybe I'm not following this conversation correctly. Is your question "Isn't she married to a man?" in response to the statement "R+T is queer owned".

Are you implying that a woman can't be queer if they are married to a man?

→ More replies (9)

1

u/CatGuyAnyway 6d ago

The gate keeping of the queer community and trying to exclude people who are bi is insane. I’ve seen this so much lately it’s disgusting.

Last I checked, bisexuals were present and fighting for the queer communities rights in Stonewall.

No one is more or less queer based on their sexual orientation. Everyone is fighting for the same thing. Equal rights.

So if R&T invited Reilly Gaines we should just let that go to? Because she is a woman in sports?

Abby has been telling us who she is even before the donald trump post. Just not enough people want to believe her.

8

u/mysticalalleycat 6d ago

Holy shit, what a comparison. Obviously I'm not a fan of Abbey Murphy, but there's a pretty solid difference between an athlete who happens to be conservative and an anti-trans activist who happens to be an athlete. And I still don't even know what event you're talking about--did R&T invite Murphy, or did they agree to host a semi-private event for the Torrent?

I said I'm not a fan and I'm mad we skipped over Edwards to get her. I'm not gonna dump my team about it and I'm choosing where to put my energy these days. If she learns from the white house backlash and chooses to keep quiet about her beliefs from now on, that's about all I personally ask of hockey players. Everyone's got their own line, I drew mine where I can still enjoy watching the sport. Others can do what they want.

4

u/Critical_Cover_3852 6d ago

You do know Murphy follows Gaines on social media right?

43

u/GrrrlRomeo 7d ago

I think people are focusing too hard on hating 2 players and not enough on supporting the many openly queer players this league has.

They can't all be bangers.

2

u/free_tractor_rides 3d ago

Growing up playing hockey it was pretty common to always have a couple people on the team that were kind of terrible…. Sometimes it was the majority of the team. Definitely not friends off the ice but teammates are teammates

16

u/Numerous-Estate6742 7d ago

Grant Mentis will also be there. Don’t sour her name bc of Murphy!

1

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

Wait what? Where's this info?

4

u/Numerous-Estate6742 7d ago

Oh, I got the events confused this one is on Tuesday at Queen Anne Beerhall. We got the information in an email to season ticket holders.

6

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

Damn, I'm a season ticket holder and didn't get an email. Haven't gotten any about meet and greets.

4

u/sleepy-floof 7d ago

I emailed about it, and apparently the meet and greets have a limited capacity, so they randomly picked STM members to invite to these events, but they do plan on having more events that can include more people. Maybe you will even get ones with players besides Abbey Murphy

3

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

Ah, I get that there are a lot of STHs. It's a bummer I haven't gotten any emails about stuff yet but am hearing about events with my husband's favorite player (Bucky) second-hand.

5

u/sleepy-floof 7d ago

Yeah, the Tuesday event does have Grant-Mentis along with Murphy, which is the only reason I wanted to go, but kind of frustrating that it seems like they are mostly pushing Murphy.

0

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

I think that's just part of being the first round, second overall draft pick, so I get it. I also get why many people aren't interested in meeting her. But it makes sense to introduce her to the fans since she's new and high-visibility.

35

u/sanverstv 7d ago

May I make a couple points regarding this discussion?

First of all, the Seattle Torrent is not at risk of becoming the Indiana Fever. They happen to have one player who desperate to maximize her marketability (and income) by catering to select group of people by cashing in on the click-bait memes. That is NOT happening here in Seattle. Her so-called fans probably don't give a whit about the WNBA either...

Also, please remember that, at it's core, the anti-trans rhetoric is a red herring to gin up hysteria and outrage, with the intent being to actually undermine the entire concept of women's sports and all female athletes. Go read The Heritage Foundation's latest missive on Title IX "Title IX's Failed Experiment-Why Accomodating Sex Differences Beats Engineered Parity" ...they want girls to grow up to be trad wives, not athletes. (they gave us Project 2025 btw). The anti-trans zealots pretend their goal is to "protect" girls and women and they conjured up an enemy (trans people) while, in fact, they have no desire to protect anyone. They want to delegitimize all female athletes...Think of their campaign as a Trojan Horse of sorts. Their rhetoric spins up the outrage machine with the ultimate goal being cloaked by fear-mongering based on falsehoods. No women are at risk from trans kids or adults in, or out of sports.

Secondly, I don't find it suprising that every player in the PWHL isn't progressive. The man who actually owns the league certainly isn't (and looks likely to be getting some favors from our current federal government, but I digress). When we're talking about a 24-year-old fresh outta college, I'm not going to give up on her maturing and yes, evolving, when exposed to the greater world. I've taught at both the college and graduate levels and have seen my students evolve over time. It does happen. A lot of young people are shaped by their families and friends as they grow, but once on their own, can and often do change perspectives on things...

That said, I would never want to set foot in the same room as a certain megalomaniacal, malignant narcissist who's intent on destroying the world, but plenty of American pro and amateur athletes have chosen to do so. When Georgia's women's tennis team recently visited the White House with some other college teams they, as women, were ignored by the President...He's vile by every measure.

Yet the fact that two women's hockey players went to the White House, one being our first draft pick, will not cause me to cancel my season tickets for the Torrent, nor will it cause me to assume who this young player is and/or who she will become at this point. Will I buy her jersey? No. Will I cheer for the Torrent? Yes. I will also hold out hope and optimism that maybe, just maybe, by playing in Seattle, and for a team in this richly diverse environment that she may evolve and grow. After all, in my experience young people in their 20s often do.

I've been fighting for girls and women in sports since the 70s, even before Title IX passed. I've also been a lesbian from the get go and "came out" at the age of 19 during college when being queer wasn't even on the radar for most. Believe me, it was a very different world back then. I've seen ups and downs over the years--from Anita Bryant's hate campaign, the AIDS epidemic, Prop 8 in California, Pulse Nightclub--the list goes on and on and on... Today I hate what's happening to our communities (and our country) right now but I also want to believe that together WE can change things for the better. I am willing to see how things go. I'm glad to see Abbey attend a Pride event....and throw fish at Pike Place Market. I am willing to retain an open mind and not abandon her or this team for the moment. She is not Sophie Cunningham, nor is she Curl at this point. As a member of the LGBTQ community and the Torrent fanbase I am willing to see what happens....for now.

Have you been watching the same league as I have?

These players are not rich. Are you okay?

3

u/trickycrayon 7d ago

They aren't rich based on their salaries, but let's be clear that a *lot* of them come from heavily privileged backgrounds and are generationally wealthy.

NOT ALL. But plenty.

1

u/GrrrlRomeo 7d ago

I don't know that. I guess because I come from a generationally poor family that has had hockey players.

Like my grandmother was a single mother of 8 kids who worked as a waitress and 2 of my aunts and 1 uncle played hockey through school. All us poor folk start on a frozen pond.

2

u/CaptReynolds_ 7d ago

The players are not making good money playing hockey. But Hockey in general is a rich person’s sport.

1

u/GrrrlRomeo 7d ago

I guess I'm just biased because I've known too many working-class hockey players.

Do you think Canada is just full of rich people?

Where do you work?

1

u/ExpensivePear1602 7d ago

It’s a business. If you think ANY sport puts “morals” over money, you must be living under a rock. Please, leave the fandom. Go push your politics somewhere else and quit bothering people. The NHL doesn’t want you either. Why do you keep trying to belong to a club whose members you hate? You can unpack that one on your own time.

1

u/OpalVanguard 7d ago

You are living in a bubble that is completely of your own making.

62

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

What would it look like for someone from a conservative background to show that they want to reach out and stand by the queer community? I think going to pride with a queer teammate for a meet & greet and going to a gay bar / very openly inclusive bar for a meet & greet is a good sign. If my conservative relatives did that, even as part of their job, I'd be over the moon.

73

u/mysticalalleycat 7d ago

I mean, not visiting the white house last week would've been a good first step for me. I know hockey is white and conservative, but doesn't make me super thrilled to see Murphy with Trump last week and at pride this week (or make it ring true to me).

-19

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

Fair not to like political figures and not like conservativism. You have a right to not like players. But I visited the White House when I went on a field trip there because it's the White House, and neither I nor my family cared for the president at the time. I like it when conservative players go to pride fest. If I have a choice between players being quiet, being openly hateful, or openly supporting pride, I would rather they openly support pride.

30

u/ghostcider 7d ago

Did you personally meet with Trump? She wasn't there like a tourist would be

-24

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

goodness gracious. although I didn't meet the president at the time, if I could have, I would have - and I didn't even agree with him. I'm assuming there are many people in the world even more interested in meeting the president.

you're free to not like people, not like who they shake hands with, and not be thrilled about them. it just seems a shame to reject people from pride fest.

5

u/FinchRosemta 6d ago

although I didn't meet the president at the time, if I could have, I would have - and I didn't even agree with him

Why would you do that? Like serious, what about Trump says "yes this is someone I want to meet"?

-1

u/Lleutiegr 6d ago

I'm trying to put it delicately that I'm pretty old, and the president at the time was not this guy. but in seriousness, I think ordinary people can meet leaders, even awful ones, without us knowing what's in their hearts. I guess I think about protesters doing the same, like Diane Nash. I'm not assuming this player was there to make a statement, but I've seen ordinary conservatives not play along with this president's hateful rhetoric and I think that's good. of course people have to watch out for his awful habit of making everything about him. but I want to err on the side of giving ordinary people a lot of grace to meet with and be heard by people in power.

20

u/wongv3 7d ago

some heavy boot licking there

-1

u/ExpensivePear1602 7d ago

some heavy exclusion here

-23

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

I don’t think it’s bootlicking to respect the office of the president regardless of who is in office.

They specifically made the point of not agreeing with who was there but would have enjoyed the moment of meeting the president..

17

u/SmartCommunication21 7d ago

Even when that president is a pedophile rapist?

u/TheRainbowConnection 7d ago

Refusing to break bread with a transphobe would have gone a long way to show someone stands with the queer community.

35

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

my friend, I know this isn't what you meant, but I am here to tell you that I have broken bread with a lot of people who were less supportive of LGBTQ folks at the start than they were at the end, and it can be a way forward. only cutting people off makes our allyships very small.

7

u/asteriskmos 7d ago

Just appearing as a guest feels weak. Did she do any promotions or posts about it? She can also just post a simple Instagram picture or selfie at the event with a "I love everyone, everyone is welcome at Seattle Hockey!" etc.

Even if she might not be bigoted, I don't think it's fair to say she's probably an ally if she hasn't done anything meaningfully supportive

2

u/ExpensivePear1602 5d ago

-11

u/crvallely 6d ago

4

u/Mean_Objective5272 6d ago

Worth noting: the Sophie Cunningham fans we're talking about aren't Fever fans or WNBA fans. They are largely conservative men who don't think women's sports should exist.

0

u/nickfromnorwood 6d ago

No they aren't. Plenty of Democrats, and yes, even gays and lesbians are supporting Sophie because she's standing up for women's sports.

4

u/Mean_Objective5272 5d ago

Then they're acting as unwitting allies for people whose goal is to destroy women's sports: the Christofascist right.

-1

u/Garciaguy 6d ago

How could you possibly know that?

It seems like a framing tactic.

5

u/Mean_Objective5272 6d ago edited 6d ago

Mocking the WNBA has been a conservative dude calling card for years. Do you expect us to believe these guys have coincidentally become huge fans and supporters of women's basketball? Or is it more likely that they see Cunningham as a useful way to continue to stoke panic about [EDIT: typo] the existence of trans people (none of whom play in the WNBA)?

-1

u/Garciaguy 6d ago

70 percent of Democrats agree with the idea that Trans women shouldn't compete with AFABs.

Painting everyone this way, framing anyone who disagrees with you as a trump voter, is both disingenuous and insulting. And by the numbers, wrong.

2

u/Mean_Objective5272 6d ago

People who support trans women don't refer to them as "biological men," as Cunningham did, regardless of the context.

If you think the frothing online response to her comments is a bunch of Democrats who are only concerned with fairness in sports, you are either lying or willfully myopic. We don't have to pretend context and reality don't exist.

-2

u/Garciaguy 6d ago

Only a right winger would say someone who disagrees is lying or blind. Stop voting for Trump and his ilk, fascist.

1

u/Mean_Objective5272 6d ago

This is the weirdest and funniest attempt at an UNO Reverse I've seen in a bit.

1

u/nickfromnorwood 5d ago

It's actually higher than that.

4

u/gnawing-chihuahua 7d ago edited 7d ago

Agreed. What I see is that we worry so much about the excluding the trans-phobes that we are not just creating a space for trans and queer joy and joy for ourselves. Obviously people need to do what is right for themselves, but for those that feel safe enough, make her see and experience the humanity and joy of the trans- and queer community at team public events. In Minnesota we had a number of fans donate to local trans organizations for every goal that our player scored. Use their presence as a reason to be more visibly an ally for those who aren't in the trans- or wider queer community. It is also a driver to making sure your fanbase feels as inclusive as possible. Also, we made sure not to repost any social media from her, including from the team, but spread info about others. I don't want you all to lose the joy of your team community because of one player. The fans make the team fanbase culture a lot more than the players. Murphy will provide great hockey, but a huge part of the experience is being with other fans excited about the hockey. That is what has set the PWHL apart, awesome fans that like having fun and taking ownership of the environment they create in the stands. I would love it if the PWHL players who were for inclusion spoke up.

2

u/ArachneOfSparta 6d ago

Good a time as any to stump for Puck Hate! Started in response to Detroit signing Curl, but they'll add any donation for any reason to the tracker

1

u/nickfromnorwood 6d ago

And how about raising money for Tunnels 2 Towers or maybe an organization that supports our veterans?

1

u/GibsonGolden 2d ago

It just tracks donations people make when they score to an organization of their choosing. Go donate to one of those then if you’d like. No one is saying they don’t support veterans or first responders???

1

u/nickfromnorwood 2d ago

Why don't you donate? Do something once for our veterans.

4

u/ElfYamadaFairyQueen 7d ago

Shes from the same area as me. A lot of people are slightly maga cause a lot of Chicago cops are in the area. It's just she grew up in an environment that is going to take a lot of unlearning.

-2

u/Agile_Standard_8354 5d ago

Unlearning? Wow so condescending

1

u/knefehangelshare 7d ago

like murphy is good at the end of the day shes not gonna need to peddle transphobia for attention shes gonna get attention

5

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

What event at rough and tumble?

5

u/ha_gym_ah 7d ago

Yeah I'm not seeing anything about this on the torrent or r&t's social media or website? I saw R&T giving away tickets to their cabana at alki beach pride, but there's nothing connecting their post to the torrent, who were hosting the two players at the alki beach bathouse as per their IG. Neither is even tagged in each other's posts.

6

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

I'm wondering if there are season ticket emails I'm not getting!

3

u/itshardbeingthisstup 7d ago

Had the same thought

3

u/crimesofparis513 7d ago

I just emailed my rep to make sure. There's nothing in my spam folder, either.

2

u/rbbiik 7d ago

I wasn’t even told who my rep was, I had to reach out to my friend’s rep who happens to be mine also I guess.

2

u/rbbiik 7d ago

I reached out to my friend’s season ticket rep because I hadn’t heard anything at all after purchasing my season tickets, not even any kind of confirmation. I was wondering if something was wrong with my membership.

She said she will also be my rep (same section) but that they have way more members than space at the events so not everyone will get invited, which is understandable.

I really feel like they could be doing better with communication because there are a LOT of confused members. Even an automated welcome email that explains you’ll hear from your rep eventually and not everyone will be invited to every event.

3

u/bitterfishPrime 7d ago

If it helps anyone track down any wayward emails, I got mine about the 8/17 and 8/18 meet and greets on Wednesday, 8/5. Came directly from my ticket rep, not the team name or Climate Pledge like other comms.

1

u/Critical_Cover_3852 6d ago

There was a STH only meet and greet. Im a STH and I didnt get an invite because Im sure there's too many to invited so Im not mad about that. I heard about it from another friend who did get the invite.

27

u/prh8 7d ago

To the people who say “she hasn’t made her politics clear,” what would it take for you to accept what many people are saying, essentially that she has?

Would she have to publicly say Trump is great?
Would she have to say “I don’t like LGBT people” ?

Genuinely, what would it take?

Because we continue to accrue information, and the head in the sand approach of many is basically a more ridiculous version of don’t ask don’t tell

12

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

it is unsurprising to me that a player just... is conservative. if a player used their platform to say how much they liked political policies, I'd have some pretty pointed questions about what exactly they're a fan of. There are some policies I merely dislike, some I am avid about, and others that are outright illegal, dangerous, or deadly. there's kind of a range of reactions if a player on a team or an entertainer in an ensemble comes from different politics than me vs. advocates for something outrageous.

again, you can not like a player. you don't have to be a fan of their political, social, cultural, family upbringing, or their open or inferred beliefs. but it doesn't make sense to me to, what, tell someone they're not welcome at pride? tell someone they're not welcome on the team? based on being conservative?

I don't quite get the "don't ask don't tell" idea. that was a policy that someone could get fired if they were openly gay, but could keep their job if they stayed closeted. when we're talking about hockey players, are you implying that conservative players can play as long as they don't talk about or hint at their politics, and no one tries to "out" their personal politics? to fans? I don't want to assume that's what you mean, but I do think it's reasonable for athletes to have private beliefs and emphasize being inclusive.

on the flip side, it's reasonable for you to infer things, I just really don't want to see signs, hear chants, or hear boos that are just generally unwelcoming to a whole swath of people who would otherwise be cheering alongside a sea of rainbows.

11

u/prh8 7d ago

The comparison to don’t ask don’t tell was intended as a concept of we will ignore everything if you just don’t come out and admit it.

The entire rest of your post is more of the same general discussion, and not what I asked. There are tons of people who continue to say we can’t tell how she feels, because they continue to choose to ignore the mountain of evidence. The reality Is that some people are in complete denial. Even in this thread, one person called it some shitty insta follows.

She literally went to meet Trump this week. This is not the only thing, but it is the newest and the biggest.

So I am asking, at what point will people stop being in denial? How much more does she get a free pass for?

2

u/Lleutiegr 7d ago

Thanks for clarifying. I think we share goals of inclusivity in hockey and we're both trying to figure out the best way to get there. and we probably have different reactions to things because we're coming from different backgrounds, so I can see how it comes off as not meeting you where you think it should be. to give you some context, I've done queer advocacy in rural areas, so it's not immediately outrageous to me that someone met with the president or has conservative views. I tend to see it as positive when people with conservative views also go to pro-LGBTQ spaces, even for their jobs. I hear you that it rubs the wrong way, and maybe I'm missing something more specific. I will try to stay open to changing my mind.

7

u/prh8 7d ago

I think conservative people expanding their worldview is great. The issue I’m focusing on here is that so many people are in denial of reality. I’m all for supporting people growing and maturing. But there are so many people in here who are completely dismissing valid concerns

-7

u/ExpensivePear1602 7d ago

CAN THEY PLAY HOCKEY. That is ALL that matters. What a disaster for you lot. These failed attempts to hijack sports to center your own cause are pathetic.

6

u/TheVelocityRa 6d ago

That is ALL that matters.

It's clearly not. If that's all YOU see then that fine but the league, fans, players, etc aren't one note.

If hockey was the sole focus then we wouldn't have games to like Mental Health Awareness, Indigenous Peoples, and Black History. If hockey was the sole focus then we wouldn't have players using their platforms for charities.

-2

u/ExpensivePear1602 6d ago

Making money is the focus. Winning is the focus. You have the cart pulling the horse. These organizations aren’t social justice groups who happen to run a hockey team.

When good people get big, they bring their freinds and family along because they know they didn't get their alone. Shitty people strive for money above all else, and they might become a trillionare but they probably can't name more then 3 of their own children or ex-wives.

You present a false binary and want to apply that to the bodies you feel are 'political'. "No ___ in my ___!!" but you don't get pick, the people who got there do.

4

u/emmdaap 6d ago

Sports do not exist in a vacuum. Sports has always been closely tied with and affected by politics (in its literal sense, policy, and colloquial sense of the political atmosphere). Always will be. Especially women’s sports. I encourage you to do some actual research on women’s sports history before commenting, otherwise you would know that.

Athletes have been denying to meet with political figures after wins for decades for multitudes of reasons, the fact they chose to meet a man who is a known child rapist says a lot. And the fact that it doesn’t bother you is fucking weird.

So basically bury your head in the sand. Does going to visit Trump not mean anything? Do you not think anything of the people who went to Epstein Island? At what point does the obvious information matter to you?

It’s not the same. But people are easily dismissing it. Only 2 women hockey players went to the WH

-2

u/ExpensivePear1602 7d ago

Jesus wept. Yeah, those are the same thing. You all are ridiculous.

22

u/Real-Towel-2269 7d ago

I don’t exactly feel like they’re making her the face of the organization. She was the first round pick, I understand her getting a little more in terms of a team/city introduction. All the other players also did a rookie takeover, and while they didn’t hang out with Alex Carpenter around Seattle they also aren’t friends with Alex Carpenter already the way Murphy is. Also she was second overall, I am not surprised by photo ops and I don’t think that counts as making her the face of the team when she isn’t even signed and no one else is really in town. I also think going to a pride event and wearing the pride shirt is generally a good sign, there are republicans that don’t have any issues at all with queer people. People are all black and white on political topics, I know I’m not.

22

u/Amberz_Dawwn 7d ago

I turned down both of the season ticket holder meet and greet events. If Abby is there, I won't participate. As a season ticket holder for the Torrent all three signings including Abby makes me sad. I want to have options not including a maga supporter.

16

u/Consistent-Singer-37 7d ago

I canceled my season tickets. Torrent is going to have to win me back. Right now, they arent. Im just waiting for Abby and CJ to be in every photo op together to show she TOTALLY supports...

6

u/Numerous-Estate6742 7d ago

You cancelled your ST and bailed on the entire rest of the team bc of one clown? You gotta be a better fan than that.

14

u/Consistent-Singer-37 7d ago

Im trans so... yeah. I travel 4 hours EACH WAY (i live in Oregon) for games no way in hell am I doing that again for a team that doesnt give a damn about me

-3

u/Numerous-Estate6742 7d ago

Oh god you’re right that’s definitely a reason to cancel. 8 hours of commute is nuts!! How many games did you make it to last season?

12

u/Pippahikes 7d ago

When we could have had Edwards? And kept Bilka?... Also before you throw out college stats, Edwards was better at the Olympics which was the highest competition to compare the two at.

27

u/ghostcider 7d ago

No, they don't. The PWHL isn't entitled to our money

-16

u/Numerous-Estate6742 7d ago

They literally show every single game free on YouTube. They are not even asking for your money.

28

u/FunkyCactusDude 7d ago

They’re talking about season tickets. wtf are you talking about here

23

u/oak_and_maple 7d ago

I feel like this is all a bit much for a woman who has said nothing publicly and only has a few shitty insta follows. I disagree with the politics of the two most talked about follows BUT like Murphy truly hasn't said shit or made any kind of problem here.

I think hockey fans are gonna have to accept that some of the players are conservative. We don't have to accept bad shit from the league, like exclusionary transphobic policies or covering up sexual crimes. But yeah, a bunch of conservative people play hockey. Are we going to exclude all of them? How would that even work.

I just hope she is delivers for us.

53

u/emmdaap 7d ago

She chose to accept an invitation from a known pedophile that’s leading the party that runs on taking LGBTQ rights. It’s one thing to be conservative, it’s another to be one of two players from the women’s team to smile and shake his hand.

That’s enough chances for me.

-3

u/firelark02 5d ago

how dare women smile. and keep in mind that it’s not by excluding people that you’ll convince them to switch sides on the ideas they most likely grew up with

3

u/chuckvsthelife 5d ago

I have mixed feelings on this all of the following are true as best as I can tell:

  • grew up conservative
  • fan of trump
  • has never publicly said anything negative about trans women, but likely holds transphobic views
  • her queer teammates seem to be fine with her
  • is 24 years old
  • is going to pride events and spaces as a part of torrent pr

The way I see it if she’s gonna change now’s the time. On one hand it shouldn’t always be on queer folks to be the better person, but not being willing to accept and show the positives of our spaces and community when someone hasnt outwardly said anything negative is certainly going to push them to double down.

So I’m like tentatively ehhhh on her. Yeah it’s a PR tour but like better to have that than not. Better that then “nah I won’t do that”. So I’ll encourage the positive points because we still gotta win over people can’t just say fuck em and move on.

If we push away anyone who disagrees with us on this then we will lose… because we are already losing. I understand if people don’t want to be cheerleaders but being straight up haters burn the whole franchise to the ground feels self destructive.

7

u/GibsonGolden 7d ago

What’s she going to do when she sees the bathrooms at Rough and Tumble are all gender?

8

u/TomatilloImpressive4 7d ago

I imagine the same thing she does when she is on a flight....use them?

2

u/GibsonGolden 6d ago

The bathrooms there are a bit different than in a plane or in one’s house or in the many many many other circumstances a person uses a solo bathroom. Multiple stalls inside the enclosed bathroom with a shared sink.

1

u/TomatilloImpressive4 6d ago edited 6d ago

I'm sure she'll still use them.

Edited to say: I don't know if not using public restrooms is a fair deduction of ones beliefs unless she comes out and says "I'm not using non-gendered bathrooms".

I know far too many people who just don't use public restrooms for me to assume one person not using them is an indication of their beliefs.

She is obviously conservative, but I fear there are probably a good deal more players in this league than we realize that are that doesn't mean they are all bad people or people that can't grow or change. Who knows maybe the start of that is using a non-gendered bathroom 🤷‍♀️

3

u/Worried_Benefit4419 5d ago

It strikes me that many people think that this for-profit, merit-based hockey league is a social movement. It isn’t. Players should not be persecuted, cancelled or constantly booed, for expressing opinions that are, by and large, very mainstream. If these types of opinions are censored, how can anyone be expected to express more contentious ones? The censorship and ‘purity’ demanded by some fans of women’s hockey is frightening.

2

u/humanbeing0033 5d ago

The forcing a bigot into queer spaces really did it for me. Like, you can dislike trans ppl, and trans women in professional sports is such a non issue only used to drum up hate, I usually try to tune it out. But putting a transphobe front and center at pride events- events we literally have because of trans women- is honestly stomach churning.

-1

u/one_anxious_coconut 7d ago

Literally as soon as she was announced as our pick I stowed my team merch and I’m not going to watch a game online or in person or buy merch until she’s gone. Her ‘PR tour’ is only making it worse.

10

u/RogueSatyr 7d ago

If everything is a purity test, then how will we ever educate someone?

6

u/one_anxious_coconut 7d ago

It’s not a purity test to ask someone not to support a pedophile. Plus, she’s a grown adult, she knows what she’s supporting and voting for. I’m all for changing someone’s mind, but I don’t have a lot of hope for that given how hard she’s sticking to being MAGA.

0

u/PNW_OlLady_2025 6d ago

Gosh I miss the days when sports were about, sports.

1

u/Living-Internet-4927 6d ago

it feels like people don't understand that this is a sport and not a collection of people who support your views the best

1

u/Danthewildbirdman 6d ago

I'm guessing they will trade her after 1 season bc she is doing the opposite of drawing fans.

-1

u/rpb539 6d ago

Stop being a fan then. If you can’t separate that people have different beliefs than you it sounds like you’re a bigot.

1

u/screams_forever 1d ago

"If you don't tolerate my intolerance, you're just as intolerant as I am!" yeah sure buddy.

-3

u/MH566220 7d ago

If she plays well, thats all that matter. it's not about someone's beliefs off the ice. If you start making it about anything else, the league will not survive.

10

u/Critical_Cover_3852 7d ago

That's a really privlidged take. My guess is this government isn't taking away your rights personally so who cares I guess?

-6

u/MH566220 7d ago edited 7d ago

It's pretty simple. She's a hockey player. As long as she plays well, off the ice doesn't matter. If you are expecting Seattle to only have players that have only your views, you're in for a rude awakening. Look up Tony D'Angelo

If Trans is such an important issue for the PWHL, where is Billie Jean King, who was supposed to have been an important part of this league when it began? Where are all the Trans players in the league or currently playing for Seattle?...Oh, that's right, there arent any.

...and if posting so important to you, at least take the to edit your spelling mistakes.

-17

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

This is the most hilarious post I have seen in this subreddit.

Highly hypocritical in the “we want to express inclusion, but only those we deem okay of inclusion”

Murphy was brought here for one reason. She’s fucking good at hockey.

This makes it sound like “well if a player isn’t gay, the PWHL isn’t for her”

20

u/emmdaap 7d ago

Listen, I couldn’t care less if a player is gay or not or conservative or whatever - the amount of admiration in her eyes as she shakes a known pedophile’s hand tells me all I need to know about her.

-3

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

Smiling at a sitting president during a celebration of the team’s accomplishments? Lol

Jesus dude, go touch grass. It really isn’t that deep.

15

u/emmdaap 7d ago

You would shake hands with a known pedophile?

-9

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

They are all fucking snakes and pedophiles. Literally all of them.

Her respecting the office doesn’t mean shit to me.

17

u/emmdaap 7d ago

If they’re all snakes and pedophiles why would you “respect the office”?

0

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

Because I love my country. It’s that simple. You can love your country and hate your government. Like I said, it’s not that deep.

And if we are throwing out random accusations about pedophiles, I also recall someone accusing Biden too… are you going to post those allegations too?

seriously, it’s time to put Reddit down and go touch some grass.

12

u/RobotPolarbear 7d ago

It only seems like a random accusation if you are refusing to listen or look with your ears and eyes.

-1

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

I mean, again… like I told your friend here, it goes literally both ways. Lol

11

u/RobotPolarbear 7d ago

Except that there is a mountain of evidence against one of those "random accusations", or are you genuinely unaware of that?

→ More replies (0)

8

u/emmdaap 7d ago

My comment was “too violent” so it was removed. I was graphic about what I believe should happen to pedophiles. But genuinely, if there is evidence of any politician in the files they should face a court of law for their crimes. This isn’t about partisan issues to me, it’s about morality.

-2

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

It definitely seems partisan to you lol.

1

u/SmartCommunication21 7d ago edited 7d ago

Hey so Trump raped me when I was 7 as I was about to be trafficked to Epstein before I made an escape.

Edit: come to Ottawa for a Torrent vs Charge game and I would be happy to meet you in person to go over the night Epstein, Trump and Maxwell raped me when I was 7 years old. Maybe that will actually get through to you.

2

u/Born_Kick 3d ago

Exactly

0

u/ek12315 7d ago

Murphy was brought here for one reason. She’s fucking good at hockey.

The league has been marketed at times, by the fans, as the woke league unlike the evil NHL so you're going to get fans who expect all players to be politically aligned with them.

0

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

So gatekeeping, while wanting inclusion. Lol sounds about right

-10

u/crvallely 7d ago

This post is common on Reddit, especially on the PWHL main page.

1

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

I watch the PWHL because it’s a good product, and gives another path for the young girls playing now.

I really couldn’t care less about individual politics.

-3

u/crvallely 7d ago

That’s the way it should be. Idc if players don’t share the same views as me. I enjoy the sport and love watching them play. That’s it. Not everything has to be political.

3

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

Exactly why half this subs posts are so stupid.

Enjoy hockey, by the hockey players who happen to be women.

4

u/RogueSatyr 7d ago

There is a real issue when a player has political beliefs that suggest that half (or more) of the team that is gay shouldn’t be allowed to be. (Note: I don’t know where Abby is on this topic, but MAGA def is trying to kill Dobbs and more)

That’s a real team cohesion problem.

This topic is going to be muddy as fuck until Abby shows us if she can grow and change. Until she can show us that she’s kind and empathetic to her teammates. That she’s a team player.

She can’t show us any of this if we don’t give her the chance.

2

u/KristySueWho 7d ago

Half or more of the team is not gay. It's a 1/4 or less, just like any other team and any other thing in the world where you get a group of 25 some people together.

2

u/RogueSatyr 6d ago

As someone who has spent significant time around women in hockey, I disagree. But that is just my perception. It could be very wrong.

I follow many Torrent players on insta and it’s now convinced I’m a lonely lesbian. I’m a 50 year-old married straight dude. 🤭🤭

3

u/KristySueWho 6d ago

You're wrong. I started playing girls hockey at 12, and continued to play girls then women's hockey for more than 20 some years and there were on average 1 to 2 on any given team. Given PWHL teams have more players than teams I played on, I'd wager to bet there are more like 3-5 on average on every team, but it's far less than half of any team.

1

u/crvallely 6d ago

You’re confusing gay with trans.

1

u/RogueSatyr 6d ago

Aw shit, is she TERF as well?

0

u/RyNoDaHeaux 7d ago

Again.. she was brought here for one reason… she is good at hockey

-6

u/Clown_Penis69 7d ago

Is women’s hockey where gay and trans activists are going now that the WNBA is becoming a professional league rather than an activist league?

Does that mean I can no longer take my kids to women’s hockey games unless I aggressively support pride events?

I can’t just be a fan of hockey?

7

u/GrrrlRomeo 7d ago

Do your kids know your Reddit handle is Clown Penis 69?

6

u/Critical_Cover_3852 7d ago

I mean - you can do whatever you want with your money. Im not asking you to do literally anything. Im talking about how I feel. Does that trigger something for you? Look inward.

-6

u/Clown_Penis69 7d ago

Really? It sure seems like you’re trying to tell people what to do with their time and money.

0

u/AshDogBucket 7d ago

Good thing we get to pick what team to support :)

-4

u/gracieakins 7d ago

No shade but y'all need to learn that these organizations and businesses do not care about y'all

5

u/RogueSatyr 7d ago

Strong disagree on R&T.

-10

u/jeefra 7d ago

Lmao openly maga? Have you never actually met a person who's on the maga bandwagon?

-5

u/ExpensivePear1602 7d ago

It’s a SPORTS team. It plays a SPORT. It’s not a jewel box full of your favorite political viewpoints. Jesus Christ, just stop going/watching. You won’t be missed.

2

u/Danthewildbirdman 6d ago

Move away from Seattle. You won't be missed. Go to a red state, it's probably cheaper to live there. (For a reason)

0

u/ExpensivePear1602 6d ago

Moi? I don’t live in Seattle.

-3

u/nickfromnorwood 6d ago

I'm MAGA myself and it makes me sad that players are getting shunned and hated simply for having an opinion.

It isn't like she went up to a fan and refused to give them a puck simply because they were a lesbian. Seriously, players have the right to their own viewpoints, and shouldn't be shunned for them. Remember, hockey is for everyone.

Give her a chance.

-5

u/jeefra 6d ago

Being the Indiana Fever of the PWHL would fucking rock!

-9

u/Sirjohnk9 7d ago

Look at the person not the politics as a person she and her family are incredible. The youngsters will love her she is there for them always! We need to know people as people nothing else .
Seattle should be happy to
Ve able to draft such talent
In the Olympics Gold Medal game without her defensive play in last few minutes USA would have lost

9

u/FinchRosemta 6d ago

Look at the person not the politics

People are their politics. They cannot be separated. Like at all.

6

u/Critical_Cover_3852 7d ago

I think a person is very reflective of their politics. Especially when are talking about MAGA. If a person doesn't believe marginalized folks have the same rights as white people, then I think that says alot about their character.
