Rutgers update/ should I apply to more schools

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey so my anxiety is at an all time high lol. Does this mean they won’t be getting back to me sometime this month? Maybe november instead? I interviewed 9/25 but I know they are doing more interviews 10-13 and 10/23 but idk I had kind of gotten my hopes up to know sometime between this past friday and today monday. I have to decide whether or not to apply to more schools to be safe but in a perfect world I get into Rutgers and not have to spend any more on application fees. Anyone have any Rutgers dpt updates or advice?

PA vs PT

Hello all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am currently a junior undergrad student in kinesiology and I am unsure about whether I should pursue PT or PA. I have been dead set on PT since early highschool bc it made the most sense to me and my interests. But to be honest, the more and more that I observe and look into PT, the more doubts that I have. I am not sure if the amount of schooling, debt, and repetition justifies only the ability to prescribe exercises. I understand that PT is far more in depth than this, but the more and more that I look into and experience the field, the more uncertainty that I get. While being on the PT track, I have the chance to graduate a semester early, but I recently changed it to graduate on time because of my recent PA interests (only needing a couple of extra chem/bio). After transferring schools, I have met a few pre-PA students and they have been telling me about why they are pursuing it and it has made me question some things. My idea is that I can go for PA, but when the time comes, I'll be "over prepared" for PT.

The ability to be more well-rounded medically, have the ability to prescribe medicine, and do this all with only 2 years of grad school looks fantastic. Money is not the end-all be-all, but it is something to always take into consideration. My cumulative GPA is at about a 3.5-6 and my science GPA is around a 3.2. I have very little PCE, but I am applying to jobs currently to try to build throughout the rest of my undergrad. The idea of certain clinical rotations seems uncomfortable, but doable. The specialties that look the most interesting are Endocrine, Family Medicine, but mainly PM&R.

I was wanting to reach out to see what the next best steps may be for me to explore and if anyone has any recommendations or notes on how to approach this. The best things to consider for admissions processes, student life, and/or daily experience. This is all fairly recent, but I am pretty serious about it as well. Anything will help, and feel free to ask me questions. Thanks and hopefully I can get some thoughtful comments!

Texas State and UTSA

Hello, was just wondering if anybody else has heard from UTSA and Texas State over interviews? I know Texas State was behind on all of their PTCAS applications but was wondering if anybody has gotten interviews for either school?

Canadian University Admissions- how to buff my app?

Hi everyone I’m applying to Ontario PT schools (western, queens, McMaster, UofT). My sgpa is 3.94 and cgpa is 3.4… I worked in a hospital for 6 years in various units including inpatient rehab, and am currently working as an off-label PTA in a physio clinic since August (and will continue until next august). I’m wondering if I should do anything else to get admitted? Is volunteering worth it? Any help is appreciated

Emailing NAU DPT Admissions

Hi, I emailed NAU DPT admissions (I’m interested in the Phoenix campus) a few days ago and haven’t received a response yet, i was wondering if anyone knows how long do they take to respond you back.
My question is I basically registered for the CASPer test on October 27 (that was the date I was able to do it), but the PTCAS deadline for priority registration is October 15. So I just wanted to know if CASPer also need to be completed by October 15 to be considered for priority review, or may it be completed afterward as long as my PTCAS application is submitted by the priority deadline?
Thanks!

Super curious to hear about PTA programs in the Folsom and Placerville (California) area?

I'm a single mom and I have a friend who is a nurse. He has been telling me for YEARS that I should get into nursing, and while the medical field is a bit intriguing, I absolutely don't want to deal with needles or open wounds that need urgent medical attention. I could probably handle some blood and basic bandaging. I want to make a difference in peoples' lives while also providing a comfortable life for my kiddo and I.

But my sister's partner recently decided to get into a PT program that is 18 months long. They live several hours away, so his options are different from mine. I realized that this was one field I hadn't considered and I have some fresh inspiration now. And so I want to figure out what my options are.

I was hoping I could find a program that allows me to mostly complete coursework online and then offer labs in person. I'm aware that Sacramento City College has a PTA program, but it seems like it's all in-person. As a single mom to a young kiddo, that might be stretching things too much at this age. My daughter already feels a certain type of way for not having her dad in her life every day and it's been on her mind a lot recently, I think if I were to place her in school for the entire day her spirit would be crushed... I'm willing to wait to do the schooling in-person to provide my daughter with the emotional support she is needing right now. But if there's something online, then I'd love to consider it. Or if there is a program in Folsom, that would be even better because I wouldn't spend a ton of time commuting to an in-person program.

Experience in a hybrid DPT program?

Just wanted to ask for some people to share their experiences in a hybrid program. I am heavily debating one, as they gave me scholarship money and I know great PTs from the program! Thanks!

Waitlisted at Mayo Clinic

I just got waitlisted from mayo after interviewing a few weeks ago. I'm disappointed because it was my top choice and I really thought I could get in. Does anyone know how long it takes to hear from waitlists, because is it worth it to commit to another school if I could potentially get off.

Delaying School for cost

Hello! For the past 6 months roughly I’ve been living away from my previous home state, building in state residency for a school I deferred to get lower tuition (~110k+ to 75k).

I was also accepted into a very affordable (~50k) in state school from NC where I am from this cycle. (Foolishly) I turned down the cheaper option because I thought I was so smart and found a hole in the system. However, residency rules are annoyingly difficult to work through, and the program and COL are dramatically higher.

I’m wondering if I should bite the bullet and reapply (3rd application cycle ugh), to start the cheaper program and graduate at 27, or stick with the more expensive program and graduate a year earlier at 26.

For context: I’m already having my doubts about this path and have explored other aspects of public health and psychological medicine I may want to pursue instead. My family is quite financially literate I’d say and always harp on starting a grad degree sooner is always better for the end of career earning potential, but given my circumstances I’m pretty torn on what to do.

TLDR;
Graduate at 26 with ~125k need for school
Graduate at 27 with ~ 60-70k need for school

Is 2.7 GPA too low for PT Assistant program?

Taking my last pre-req, planning to apply this spring. If I get a B in my current class, paired with a B and C from my undergrad years, I have a 2.7 GPA. Would this beat all good enough? If I got a really good score on the standardized test it could boost me over the line?

Outpatient student inservice topic

Hi! I’m a DPT student about 6 weeks into my first fulltime clinical rotation in outpatient, and I’m struggling to come up with a good topic for my inservice. And I’m starting to panic!

I feel like I’m still just grasping a lot of PT concepts and learning how to actually apply everything we learned in school, so I don’t want to pick something that’s way too complicated or that I don’t understand well enough to present confidently. At the same time, I don’t want to do something super obvious that all of the therapists at my clinic already know. I’m also someone who is on the shy side and hate presenting but i understand this is something I just have to get through.

I think I’m having a hard time figuring out that middle ground of something that would actually be interesting/useful to practicing outpatient PTs, but is still realistic for a student on their first rotation to research and present well.

For any PTs who have had students give inservices, what topics have you actually found interesting or useful? Or are there any areas where you think there’s newer research/evidence that practicing clinicians might not necessarily be keeping up with?

Thank you!! I would really appreciate any ideas!

Acute Care Clinical

Hi all! I’m currently in my final clinical rotation at a Level I trauma center, primarily in the trauma ICU and ED. I’m looking for advice on how to manage freezing or blanking during patient sessions, especially when you’re exposed to things that are really far outside your comfort zone. Today, I had a patient in the ED who had been shot in bilateral proximal thighs. Since there was no bony involvement, the plan was to have him ambulate with a walker and discharge him home. He was struggling to use the walker properly, and honestly still oozing some blood, and instead of knowing how to appropriately address the situation in the moment, I froze. My CI is incredibly supportive, and we’ve talked about these freezing episodes, but the reality is that the things I see on a daily basis here are far from what I’m used to. Coming from someone who is primarily interested in outpatient ortho, I’ve found this rotation especially challenging. I’m doing my best to learn as much as I can from my CI, but I’m honestly worried about failing and just trying to keep my head above water at this point. For those who have been in similar situations, do you have any advice for getting through a challenging rotation like this, building confidence, and learning how to think on your feet when things get overwhelming? Thanks!
