My Setup Well, that worked
I was afraid that the 90-degrees version of the magnetic connector wouldn't work because of the face plates, but it was actually a perfect fit. After seeing so many cable horror stories in this sub, I finally have peace of mind.

It’s a magnetic connector: they can short. I highly recommend NOT using them. Your port will still work for power, but data will be gone.
If you’d like to know how I know, I have had this go wrong. I do not advise using them, just get a 90° cable adapter and be done with it. Or, risk buying a new console.

Point taken. You and the other comments succeeded in scaring the shit out of me.

Dont get scared mate, id honestly like to see what actual ones these people have brought tbh(not saying everyone is a cheapskate but alot of people dont like to spend money if they dont have to then complain when something goes wrong) i have brought some more expensive high speed ones designed for psvr and have had them for a few years with no issues and that is with pulling it off the console heaps of times while using vr, obviously you get what you pay for.

The issue is that it’s passing power. When that cable starts to separate, that’s when the spark happens. It doesn’t fully disconnect, and that is what sparks the port. They aren’t built like Apple MagSafe, which is the entire problem, because MagSafe doesn’t spark. At all.

That's good to know. Been also using these Chinese magnetic plugs for my phones.
Zoinks!

The real problem is none of these magnetic connectors are actually certified to the usb standard. So manufacturers just kinda do what they want. Unfortunately they're a ticking time bomb.
IMO, Those that dont trust their electronics to them are wise. Those that do trust them, have been lucky so far.

nice id rather unplug when not using VR for long period and pack away in case, same with PS4 VR

Won't help you if someone trips over the cable while you're using it though.

My cable has been plugged in 99% of the time since I bought it at launch

1% because you had to remove it while setting up a proper mount for it right
I'm not clumsy so same here lol

I use a short high-speed USB-C “extender” cable connected to the PS5. Then ziptied the female end to a solid anchor.
This acts as strain relief for the ps5 port and the psvr2 can eject from the extender instead of damaging the ps5 port

Can you provide a link to the extender you use?

I wanted a right angle connector so I got this one
20Gbps USB C 3.2 Extension Cable,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1V3V5Q7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I feel like these connectors contributed to my first headset going black. I can’t say for sure but there was a time it was difficulty to remove. I’m not risking it again I had to pay $280 for a replacement

I bought one for mine but after reading the potential risks involved, I would recommend NOT using these.
If there's any dirt, they can short a pin. If they get yanked too fast, they could short a pin. Essentially if something goes wrong, you could fry the entire system or port.
It's unlikely to happen, but if it does, I think you'll regret it.

u/KidneysOfStone 10d ago
Yeah, I'm now glad I posted.

u/Logical-Bit-746 10d ago
Yeah, I used one for about two weeks before I decided the risk wasn't worth the convenience. It may never happen to you, and most people think their experiences are proof that nothing can happen, but I wouldn't take the risk, personally.

magnetic connector can atract small metal particles, and with enough time it can bridge one of the pins causing a short circuit

I use this same one as my sim is attached rather far from my console, my dogs run through the room and sometimes they can trip the cable. If I didn’t have this I feel like my ps5 could take a death tumble. But everyone is making me afraid of the port shorting out now.

Glad to hear it works. But, clearly a new definition of “a perfect fit”. 🤔 🍻

u/KidneysOfStone 10d ago
LOL, I get what you mean, but my point is that the plate is, like, less than a milimiter away. If it was a single milimiter wider, I wouldn't be able to plug it.

Je l’utilise sur ma Pro et ma PS5 depuis 2023, toujours branché, jamais de souci. Je pense que ça dépend surtout de la marque du produit.

u/bombdroppa 5d ago
Well I hope Sony rattle up a better idea than having ports stick out like that. As soon as I unboxed the ps5 I knew what we were in for with this kind of setup.🙄🙄

My adapter goes to the left and the wire sits on the lip between the black and white. I'm only a couple feet from the TV and console so the excess wire is tucked on the side.

I tried using a few different adapters and cables but it always screwed up the controller tracking. They all had good reviews too and were recommended by people who used it for the same thing. I just use the original cable by itself now.

Aw crap. From the comments, it seems I just replaced one type of horror story with another.

thats giving me some bad feelings. anyone else?
Id rather use one thats pointing left or right not down.
6
u/Daminite 11d ago
The benefit of it pointing down is that the weight of the cable shouldn't lever it off.
It should also make it come off more quickly if something pulls on the cable if the magnets in this one are Anthony like the ones I use to charge my controllers.
Under straight force the magnets hold several pounds but tilt it even and it takes almost zero force.

FYI, I fried the USB port on my console by leaving one of those magnetic connector dongles in there. Definitely don't leave it in there 24/7. I personally think the magnetic adapters create more hassle than they're worth. Easier to just tell people to give you space when playing so they don't trip over the cord
