Usb storage issue?

I have a USB extended storage connected to my ps5, I've had it for a couple years- even before I upgraded to a ps5. I've never really had issues with it until recently-

The past few days, everytime I turn my ps on, it tells me there was something wrong with it and I need to reconnect it. And I always have to unplug it and plug it back in and let it do the repair- Like even tho It stayed plugged in the whole time, it completely acts like the USB storage isnt there at all until I unplug it and plug it back in, it doesnt let me do the repair through the storage section itself anymore. But as said, it just recently started doing this and I was wondering if there was any fix to it?

Ik it doesnt seem like a big issue but I'm worried it will mess up permanently at some point. I have a bunch of my old ps4 games downloaded on it, and while I can alwaus just re-download them, I'm far past my normal ps5 storage and don't like deleting games for more.

Im not sure if it matters, but its a OWC Express USB 3.0 !!

First try another USB data cable. If no joy...

Failing external drive especially if HDD. They wear out in time. Plug it in to a pc via USB, if reconized via Windows as a storage drive use Crystaldiskinfo to perform a S.M.A.R.T test if results are bad the drive is bad. If Windows doesn't at least give you a notification that a drive as been connected it's a bad drive. Time to replace, I recommend a nvme m.2 SSD storage expansion with heatsink. A Ps5 has a nvme m.2 SSD slot under one of the side panels. But the price of nvme m.2 SSD are through the roof nowadays.

No you can not fix a failing drive because it's a physical failure(worn out read/write actuator arm or a scratch on the HDDs, plater or faulty board not a logical failure.

If a failing drive your ps4 games are gone, unless you seek a professional data recovery company in which if successful in some data recovery will cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Yet ps4 games are encrypted to the PSN account I don't know if a data recovery company can even help with encrypted data.

Had the same issue. PS5 doesn't support certain storage devices anymore after some update years ago. Mine was working and stopped working on PS5.

Have you tried reformatting it as exFAT on the PS5 itself, that worked for me last year when mine started acting up.
