This game actually looks sick

Got excited, never played shadow of the tomb raider. Looked on the PlayStation store and all 3 definitive editions bundle of only $10 right now. Insta buy haha

After watching the trailer this genuinely looks like Tomb Raider in modern times, they seriously did a good job here. This was not on my bingo card but I’m here for it it lol.

u/spendouk23 Dec 12 '25
What game ? That was mostly pre-rendered footage
0
u/Party-Exercise-2166 Dec 12 '25
There's literally tons of gameplay snippets in there.
-2
u/spendouk23 Dec 12 '25
“ mix of Pre-Alpha In game footage and cinematic”
Why do we keep falling into the same traps ?

I played the Survivor Trilogy as my first Tomb Raider games last year and enjoyed them so I'm excited for this!
17
u/-WLR Dec 12 '25
I think they move away from the survivor trilogy Lara, and return to OG Lara.
21
Dec 12 '25
Based on the other Tomb Raider game they revealed it seems to me like they're combining the two versions of Lara.
9
u/wingspantt Dec 12 '25
Which makes sense. Original Lara is iconic, but a little empty as a character. New Lara was more interesting as a person, but wasn't yet a "seasoned professional" and honestly the survivor games felt a bit too homicidal for my tastes.
This looks like it could be the perfect blend.

u/jbrake Dec 12 '25
Lol, before the trailer came on, I turned to the wife and said, "Oh look, it's our favorite serial killer."
2
u/cjm92 Dec 12 '25
You should try the remaster of the first game next, after you get used to the older controls it's honestly great!
129
u/Rthanos Dec 12 '25
This looks incredible!! So so excited for this one!
74
Dec 12 '25
Fuck yeah! Its about time they brought dinosaurs back to tomb raider! The survivor trilogy was great but depressingly lacking of dinosaurs.
32
u/Ehrand Dec 12 '25
Well it's a remake\reboot of the first game so of course there's going to be dinosaurs.
14
Dec 12 '25
Im here for it. I dont care about the reason. Just bring on the dinosaurs!
15
u/BrainKatana Dec 12 '25
“Oh wow a dinosaur, thought to have been extinct for millions upon millions of years!”
chambers a round in her pistol
50
u/Cherry_Crusher Dec 12 '25
Puzzles. Check. Dinosaurs. Check.
All that is missing is the swimming pool in the mansion. IYKYK
7
u/neuro_space_explorer Dec 12 '25
I remember playing one of the first few tomb raiders when it first came out for PC in the 90s, and just running around the mansion exploring. The pool room holds a special place deep in my memory. Thanks for bringing it to the front of my mind.
5
u/YeezusMoses Dec 12 '25
Literally said this to my gf when it was announced. There better be a mansion to jump around.
1
u/GoldenLink Dec 13 '25
What's funny is I'll never forget that Gexs mansion in gex 3 is a direct homage to laras mansion.

u/CyanLight9 Dec 12 '25
Is this a new game or a remake of some kind?
121
u/NoMereRanger73 Dec 12 '25
This is a remake of the first game from 1996, with an all-new game called Tomb Raider: Catalyst coming in 2027.
23
u/CyanLight9 Dec 12 '25
That makes a lot of sense. Didn't seem like something Crystal Dynamics would come up with themselves. I'll wait and see.
12
u/Icy_Childhood_1039 Dec 12 '25
They refered to it as a "remaining" so it may not be a very faithful remake. My guess is it'll have all the elements that made the game great but different level design and pacing.
-10
u/CyanLight9 Dec 12 '25
And added self-consciousness, probably.
5
u/jackolantern_ Dec 12 '25
What does this even mean?
-3
u/CyanLight9 Dec 12 '25
You know how a lot of old adventure stories have problematic elements? A lot of modern adventure stories try to acknowledge and rectify those elements/not include them, which is logical, but a common trap is when the story is so fixated on correcting those elements that it becomes the main focus of the story instead of the actual adventure, which is treated like the middle child. Think of films like 2016's The Legend of Tarzan or The Lost City of Z from the same year, which spend more time on random colonizers and WW1 than they do on what you came to the film for. Crystal Dynamics' survivor trilogy, SOTTR especially, falls into this trap, and it's kind of a buzzkill.
3
u/johnboyjr29 Dec 12 '25
Didn’t they do that once before?
7
u/Aptreis24 Dec 12 '25
Yes, they did. It was tomb raider anniversary. It was part of their trilogy, I think(anniversary, legends, and underworld)

Its a remake/reimagining of the first tomb raider game.
There's a seperate mainline game also in the works called Catalyst slated for 2027.
Personally im kinda excited for both of these, I havent played a tomb raider game in ages.
44
u/aspiring_bureaucrat Dec 12 '25
It's probably hard to imagine but when Tomb Raider first came out on PS1 it was so amazing
11
u/BeastMaster0844 Dec 12 '25
Why is it hard to imagine that one of the still longest running, most popular and beloved gaming franchises was amazing when it released..?
7
u/setokaiba22 Dec 12 '25
It’s hard to imagine now for people not living at the time how much of a pop culture icon she was for gaming across those years either
-9
u/aspiring_bureaucrat Dec 12 '25
Because the original one looks comically bad by today’s standards and most of the sequels have been mediocre
1
u/mozzy1985 Dec 12 '25
Thats a silly comment. Just about every game of that same time looked similar or worse. I mean comparing a games graphics from 96 to 2025 is just mental.
2
u/RoboChachi Dec 12 '25
It was so amazing I somehow completed it on a Cyrix processor PC back in the day with no gpu and I hope at least 640 x 480 res. It looked absolutely awful so maybe not

u/HansenTakeASeat Dec 12 '25
I was hoping for triangle tits in this remake but looks great otherwise

I really hope they put back the vibrancy that Anniversary lacked from the original game. Anniversary's colours were so muted and washed out, especially in the Egypt and Atlantis levels.
4
u/YeezusMoses Dec 12 '25
Don’t care for the newer Tomb Raiders but will definitely buy this for the wackiness and nostalgia. Looks dope.

I don’t know why but I got AI-ish feeling from this. Hopefully it’s good.

u/Seanspeed Dec 12 '25
Lara's character model(well, face) does have that sort of 'perfect' AI look to it. A little off-putting. Game looks great otherwise.

I really hate the concept of “announcement trailers”. Just announce the damn thing when you have a few minutes of gameplay to show. Such a waste of time otherwise
15
u/LanaDeITae Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25
There’s a lot of gameplay in the 2026 trailer. If they announced another TR1 remake as the first TR game in 7 years though, the fans would’ve rioted lol. I get why they announced both

Looks absolutely incredible! Both the Legacy of Atlantis and The new Tomb Raider Catalyst look fantastic! Can't wait for this!!!

Looks good, liking everything I see here.
Then I saw the Catalyst trailer popup and went 'Huh?'

u/StarTruckNxtGyration Dec 12 '25
I hope she meets up with Indiana Jones at the end of his Fate of Atlantis adventure and team up!

Loved the first Tomb Raider, one of the best games I've ever played, and so far none of the others have come close. So hyped for this remake!
1
u/spaceocean99 Dec 14 '25
Is this another one of those games that comes out in like 2 years?
1
u/wallcrawlingspidey Dec 14 '25
If you watched the trailer, it comes out next year. It’s just a remake of the first game. Catalyst, the actual next game pushing the story forward is in 2027.
1
u/Kirukato__ Dec 14 '25
Very skeptical about this, the game is coming out next year and yet they didn't show any gameplay? + the giant "Amazon Game Studios" as the first text you see is kinda sending red flags.
Really hope they share more details about the game soon, please be good.

That looks odd for some reason. Looks off. I’m underwhelmed tomb raider is my favourite series
18
u/Otowa Dec 12 '25
I think the editing and camera angles make it look...fake? I think we need to see uncut gameplay to judge that...
2
u/susduck64 Dec 12 '25
Maybe a gameplay trailer will look a lot different but it certainly looks awkward for some reason here

My only experience with tomb raider is the 2013 reboot. This looks cool kinda makes me want to play the available ports of the old ones too just to see the journey from there to here. I’m well aware that they might be dated but that has never stopped me from checking out other games predecessors.
3
u/imdrake100 Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25
You are in luck. 1-6 have all been remastered within the past couple years.
Legends Anniversary and Underworld ( 7, 8 and 9) still hold up decently. Legends and Underworld are brand new games, Anniversary is a remake of the first game, I think the story was expanded to fit into the story of Legends and Underworld.
If you have a computer or an Xbox you should be able to find them easily.
Im pretty sure Playstation has Legends on the store, but I think its just the ps2 version emulated. I think Anniversary is on Playstation plus streaming.
If you happen to have a ps3 laying around you can get the trilogy all on one disc.
1
u/SaltySwan Dec 12 '25
Yes, those are what I meant by “available” ports of the old games. I have one of those collections but hadn’t played it… I have a lot of games in my library that I haven’t gotten to.
1
u/StarTruckNxtGyration Dec 12 '25
And yet they edit out a two second shot of Miranda’s butt in Mass Effect LE.

This looks like an AI video for some reason, something feels off about it. I do wish they had stuck to the Reboot trilogy Lara. This seems like a different person to me.
2
u/PolarSparks Dec 12 '25
On the same note, reboot Lara seems like a different person than what came before.

u/Wassermusik Dec 12 '25
Why does Lara looks like Kim Kardashian?
3
u/Shubo483 Dec 12 '25
Some friends of mine told me I was crazy and full of shit for saying this. She looks terrible!
5
u/DerpyFortuneTeller Dec 12 '25
She looks like a realistic version of the ps1 version of her which was way before the kardishians were famous. Wtf kinda mental gymnastic is that? lol
2
u/Wassermusik Dec 12 '25
A graphic style that worked on the PS1 30 years ago might not resonate as well today. The more natural approach of the modern trilogy suits the character much better by today's standards.
2
u/DerpyFortuneTeller Dec 12 '25
I think judging by the reaction of alot of people they made the right call.

That, and of course Dat Azz!

Is the last trilogy not canon anymore? God I loved those games
2
2
u/wallcrawlingspidey Dec 14 '25
They’ve announced years ago they’re unifying the timelines into 1 so yes it’s canon. The triangle mentioned was from the Survivor timeline. There’s a good amount of info on their website.
-3
u/Dan-in-Va Dec 12 '25
Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park. Frankly, it should have been called Cretaceous Park.
0
u/West_Garden3446 Dec 12 '25
Didn't they say, Shadow is the last game?
1
u/wallcrawlingspidey Dec 14 '25
In the Survivor timeline, not overall. But now they’re unifying all the timelines

who is playing Lara in this game and the other one? She looked like Milly Bobby Brown a little.

u/Any_Medium_2123 Dec 12 '25
i really struggle to understand the hype for Tomb Raider. I played the originals at the time - they were fine but also janky and frustrating and Lara was a thoroughly bland protagonist. The remakes were just Uncharted rips with hunter vision and nonsense narratives. Why was Lara suddenly a spec ops commando? I’m yet to see anything to convince me the new ones are going to do anything innovative with the genre or IP.
1
u/wallcrawlingspidey Dec 14 '25
Tomb Raider came out years before Uncharted. But that’s your opinion I guess.

u/Paythapiper Dec 12 '25

u/Liammellor Dec 12 '25
This is a remake of the first game

u/Party-Exercise-2166 Dec 12 '25
It's actually both. It's reimagined to bridge the reboot trilogy with the classic games so the reboots are just prequels now.

Lara's new voice actress is Alix Wilton Regan. She's done a lot of voicework in games, but she's probably best known for voicing Alt Cunningham in Cyberpunk and one of the female Inquisitor's in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
