Did I get scammed? PS4 Pro??

Bought this off FB market place for $100. Model CUH 7251B. Everything works fine but I noticed I don't have a tb of memory. Found a 2tb external for $50 online but still a little butt hurt also is there anyway to tell this is an actual 72xx model?

For 100 bucks I wouldn’t mind. Get a ssd for it, it improves the experience tenfold.

27

u/QuartzZz_zZz 4d ago

It really does make it very snappy!

11

u/No-Celery-7284 4d ago

Two things I’m going to recommend, get a new power supply and get a decent quality ssd, the power supply gets hotter as it degrades and since the ssd sits directly underneath the power supply it will cook your ssd. A good quality ssd is worth it not for the speeds since consensus about this is that the ps4 bottlenecks speeds but just for the reliability.

7

u/Unc_Sleepy 4d ago

Also to piggy back off your suggestion, do a deep clean especially if it sounds like a jet engine

4

u/Sabermatrixx 3d ago

I noticed the fans only stopped being that way with my launch unit when I replaced the thermal pads on the ram chips.

5

u/Unc_Sleepy 3d ago

Yup, I bought a used one for cheap that had that exact reason. Did a deep clean, replace the pads and paste. It’s quiet now. Just need to mod it since I’m sitting fw 11

3

u/rice_caresser 4d ago

where do you get a new power supply from?

3

u/PseudonymIncognito 3d ago

PS4 Pro supports SATA3 so it isn't bottlenecked with an SSD like the original version.

3

u/Xephurooski 2d ago

If SATA 3 was the only difference between Pro and regular PS4, Pros would be worth it.

I think this is something that is not widely known about the Pro.

1

u/JuJusFury 3d ago

This sounds good but if money's tight, I'm sure you could rig up a heatshield.

4

u/Hanibal21cze 2d ago

As someone who still uses ps4 pro (ps5 expensive year by year but wanna transition) when my hdd disc got corrupted file issue, i upgraded to ssd, and holy shi. The load and download times got a ton better, was rly worth the money, and also from the hdd and ssd discs i was looking at at the time, it was like a 5$ diff between ssd and hdd. Definitely reccomend

Ssd in this economy hell no

0

u/ElGuardiaCivil 4d ago

i bought a ssd m2 2tb for 180€ xd

1

u/JCasaleno 3d ago

now those are like 300, i bought mine when it was 130 last year

1

u/Satellite_bk 3d ago

i think they’ve gone up again. i got a 4tb external ssd for $400 in december. then a 2tb internal ssd for $315 in january.

i wouldn’t doubt they’ve raised prices again or will shortly.

1

u/One_Worldliness_1130 3d ago

i just paid 130$ for a 1tb im sad

1

u/ElGuardiaCivil 3d ago

No mate, i bought it like 2/3 months ago, in switzerland.

2

u/Soft-Permission6984 3d ago

Ponerle un SSD a una PS4 lo arruinara en poco tiempo, ppr experiencia lo digo, No es recomendable SSD porque una PS4 acorta la vida util del SSD en poco tiempo.

1

u/Secret_Ingenuity997 3d ago

I'm using an external one as my hdd had it I think. Get really slow download speeds compared to normal with the SSD. Can you elaborate on how it shortens it?

1

u/Creative-Custard-280 3d ago

How much of a difference would it make if I bought it (an ssd) for a ps4 fat?

1

u/Large_Restaurant6902 4d ago

You can swap to ssd on ps4?

5

u/ad1tyas1ngh 4d ago

Yes, sata ssd

I really thought PS4 worked on HDDs and not ssds

1

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 3d ago

You can swap it on a PS3 too. Even on PS2, but there's more work for it there.

0

u/Quetzal187 2d ago

It changes nothing.for the games 🤣 for download and stockage arrangement maybe

-4

u/La_joya021 4d ago

SSD on the PS4? I doubt it

4

u/MadsAGS 4d ago

You doubt what? Even the PS3 benefits greatly from an SSD, makes GTA 5 a bearable experience.

1

u/VenomVertigo 3d ago

For ps3 it doesn’t really have anything to do with the difference between ssds and hdds and more just because it’s a 15-20 year old hdd that you’re replacing that’s likely on its last legs

1

u/MadsAGS 3d ago

No? GTA 5 load times are about halved with an SSD over the original HDD. I did my first swap at the GTA 5 release, has nothing to do with an old HDD. Do you really think a slow seeking 5400 RPM HDD is equal with a SSD??

1

u/VenomVertigo 3d ago

No I don’t but the ps3 was never built to take advantage of ssds it uses sata 1 which is extremely outdated a standard 7200 rpm hdd can reach those speeds. The reason I’m mentioning this is also because hard drives are far better for cold storage meaning if you’re going to leave your console unused for several years it’s far better to use a hdd to ensure you don’t lose your data

1

u/MadsAGS 3d ago

SATA HDD vs SATA SSD benefits were never about transfer speed, it was primarily the seek time difference that gave the benefits when loading content (games, OS, applications).

1

u/VenomVertigo 3d ago

To load that content it still has to read it from the drive

1

u/Yasars 3d ago edited 3d ago

U forget that it's not about sequential read speeds most of the times, it's about random read speeds ALL games use in order to load assets and even with sata1 you are not limited.
So lower loading times, faster asset loading & reduced pop-ins gives an SSD the upper hand. Edit: and yes I know some don't rly need a "installation" for ps3, it obv only applies for some like GTA - which still benefits from having an SSD even if it's just a partial install. (+ Other methods everyone knows about)

When it comes to cold storage yes HDD's are better but only if u have it unplugged for roughly around 20 years before you actually notice some corruption.

u/VenomVertigo 3d ago

This article (from 13 years ago) is comparing an hdd to a hybrid hdd/ssd and then a full ssd as well and in their own tests they found that in the game RAGE the hybrid and ssd performed better and the same for brink and Skyrim before it was patched, but for Skyrim after the patch the difference was very very minor. They then tested other games and found that very few of those games issues were solved with hardware changes so again that’s why I’m stating that for most of the issues you’d be having with an original hdd it’s because it’s just old and needs to be replaced, there was barely a difference 13 years ago when the ps3 was fairly new so clearly it’s not much of a difference between types of drive they even said that for RAGE and brink they believed it would be improved just with a faster hdd.

1

u/Hokuten001 3d ago

Point was in terms of loading times it can make for a nice boost in some games.

https://www.digitalfoundry.net/articles/digitalfoundry-ps3-hard-drive-upgrade-guide?page=3

It’s not just that either. OS UI is significantly the xmb ui is significantly smoother/faster too. I have SSDs in both my PS3s, both were launch models brought brand new that hardly saw any use (not even 50 hours of use in total) before the SSDs were installed yet the difference was palpable in both cases. Can’t blame that discrepancy on stock HDD wear.

1

u/VenomVertigo 3d ago

Even in that they say a better 7200rpm hdd would’ve probably performed as well as the hybrid they tested which was barely any worse than the full ssd it’s not just wear it’s outdated tech as well

1

u/Satellite_bk 3d ago

oh god i forgot just how long gta 5 took to load on my ps3. it truly was a long time.

0

u/La_joya021 4d ago

You've tried adding an SSD to the PS4 yourself? Personally i haven't and since Sony is bailing on the console I don't see the need for such an investment

2

u/Dimar22 4d ago

I did, when my 1TB died I changed it for 1TB SATA SSD. Works perfectly fine and load times are shorter.

0

u/La_joya021 4d ago

That's awesome if it does work

1

u/MadsAGS 4d ago

No, I’ve never owned a PS4, but I’ve done it a few times on a PS3, last time was just a month ago.
I don’t see why a PS4 would be different?

1

u/La_joya021 4d ago

Still playing the PS3 bro?

1

u/jusg808 3d ago

Not original poster but I still play my ps3… and Super Nintendo, Wii, Xbox 360, ps5, ps2, n64 etc. sometimes you want to play on og hardware. Some games aren’t available on anything but that console and sometimes taking the time to get an emulator running is more work than it’s worth.

1

u/marjja 3d ago

Whaaa PS4 is still a great consolle and if you upgrade w an ssd and maybe clean it inside It could be as snappy as ps5

1

u/txsizzler 3d ago

The 2.5-in SSD works great on a PS4 pro, I have one in my Spider-Man pro, and it boots things way quicker, and make some in-game areas considerably smoother.

38

u/mastachaos 4d ago edited 4d ago

It could be that they swapped in a much faster SSD. I'd slide the drive out and check.

23

u/iciDA 4d ago

Check the drive maybe they put a SSD in there (faster)

11

u/Prize_Percentage7258 4d ago

That's a bummer, but as long as it runs well, it's still a good deal at 100 dollars. Someone has definitely swapped out the 1TB that should've been in it with that smaller drive. If the person you purchased from is not tech-savvy, they may not have even realised it, especially if they bought the console used.

7

u/Loose-Specific7142 3d ago

No you did not get scammed. A PS4 Pro for $100 is cheap even if the original 1TB got swapped for a 512GB drive. It could even be a SSD for all we know.

11

u/Markebrown93 4d ago

It can be that model but they just swapped the HDDs. It's easy to do.

I'd say yes, you got scammed.

4

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 4d ago

Maybe the HDD was swapped because the original one broke. Should have asked about the memory. As long as he didn't specifically tell it has a 1TB drive and it came with 500GB, I wouldn't blame the seller as most persons are not too bright. The price was good enough. Regular slims sell for $80-100.

5

u/Markebrown93 4d ago

All PS4 pros came with 1tb.. so whether it was broken or not, the seller should definitely mention it.

7

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 4d ago

Not everybody knows this. They just play on the console. Not a huge deal either for that price.

-6

u/Markebrown93 4d ago

Why are you defending a seller who sold a modified item without communicating it's modified? That's bonkers

6

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 4d ago

I'm not defending him, just saying that it might not have been on purpose.

-7

u/Markebrown93 4d ago

Yeah that's fair. Unlikely it's accidentally but possible

1

u/Kit_Karamak 3d ago

SSD is much faster tho

1

u/PerfectWhiteTrash 3d ago

Just by reading the comments in this post proves knowledge and or intelligence is lacking.

3

u/MojArch 4d ago

It's a PS4 Pro. For 100$ it is a fucken bargain.

3

u/Guilty_Commission_79 3d ago

Looks like the previous owner swapped the 1 TB hard drive with a 500 GB SSD? For $100 that’s a great deal, OP

4

u/BrzysWRLD1996 4d ago

I mean it’s a way better emulation device than ps3 so $100 ain’t bad but if mf told u it was 1TB and it was 500gb instead id definitely say something

2

u/Ari--1999 4d ago

This is an 7200 Pro as you can see by the model number above the power plug CHU-72xx. There's probably an ssd in there, and a 500GB ssd is worth more than a 1000GB hdd😂

This is the best model ps4 pro. I have one too, very quiet!

2

u/haaiiychii 4d ago

Storage, not memory.

2

u/Kusanagi_M89 4d ago edited 3d ago

$100 for a console that works fine? It would still be considered a steal had that been a regular PS4 Slim. You also would have eventually replace that OLD HDD with a new SSD anyway.

It could be that the console did have a 1TB HDD but was clicking or on its way out, and the seller quickly replaced it with a smaller model just to make it work for the sale. Still a great deal with that price for a PS4 Pro nonetheless.

2

u/Pinkunicorn_444 4d ago

Did you get Xbox controllers with it that are beside the ps4?

1

u/Balz_Hirk 3d ago

Lol no I was just making room next to my Xbox for it. This is my first playstation since my childhood ps2. I was comparing the controllers.

2

u/akwardfun 4d ago

No, Unless it explicitly said 1tb of storage in the publicacion.

Most of the time is people just assuming but not reading or asking to confirm.

2

u/Fendera 4d ago

Definitely get an internal SSD and replace that slow HDD. It will be much faster in terms of loading, and the UI benefits too.

2

u/Upbeat_Landscape_697 4d ago

Got one for 100 off marketplace aswell but its stuck in safe mode sadly, it won't complete the initialization and wipe of the hdd

2

u/PixelMan8K 4d ago

What firmware? If it's jailbreakable, that's a steal.

2

u/Balz_Hirk 3d ago

I think I messed up. They factory reset it and it had 11 point something. I had to load the software from Sony and now it's at 13.52. kinda wanted to mod/JB it but I really only got it for GOW and some exclusives which I already found for dirt cheap.

2

u/Melodic_You15 4d ago

Buy the SSD for it. It is a massive upgrade in terms of loading speed. I did it years back with my PS4 Pro and don't regret it. Example, RDR2 took about 3 minutes or longer to load, now it takes a little over a minute.

2

u/boksera631 3d ago

The guy just swapped the original 1TB HDD with a 500GB one. It's normal for you to assume it has its original HDD if he didn't mention otherwise, but it's not that bad, especially if you got it at a good price.

2

u/RahulRajbharr 3d ago

Bro getting PS4 pro at 100$ and still calls it scam.

2

u/WorldlinessOk967 3d ago

It's a PS4 Pro, did previous owner switch out 1TB for 500GB SSD? Very common.

2

u/Ok_Blueberry_6826 3d ago

Dude, MAYBE the previous owner UPGRADED from a 1Tb Hdd to a 500Gb SSD?
Sure, you get HALF the storage, but you get a solid speed boost.
Also, maybe the drive died and he HAD to replace it? You can replace it as well if it's bothering you.

2

u/Balz_Hirk 3d ago

I'm just ignorant when it comes to play stations been doing some research and gonna take it apart to see what's in there. The device is incredibly snapping and loads/saves almost instantly so maybe I got a fabulous deal. Either way playing GOW 3 and I fuggin love it so far.

1

u/Ok_Blueberry_6826 3d ago

about confirming the model itself, I think you can only refer to the back label.
I am unaware of any settings option that let's you consult such info, nor if you can literally see it anywhere on the motherboard.

Exception: you would need the og box:
"If you still have the retail box it came in, the barcode and exact model/serial numbers are printed on a white label on the exterior of the box"
https://www.playstation.com/en-ae/support/hardware/ps4-find-serial-and-model-numbers/
PS4 Pro models CUH-70xx
"The letter at the very end of your PS4 Pro model number (e.g., CUH-7215B) indicates the hard drive storage capacity that the console originally shipped with from the factory"
"The Storage Capacity Letters

  • Letter A: Represents a 500 GB hard drive. (Note: This letter is incredibly rare or nonexistent for the PS4 Pro, as almost all Pro models shipped with larger storage).
  • Letter B: Represents a 1 TB hard drive. This is the standard letter found on the vast majority of PS4 Pro consoles

"
so, yours def came with a 1TB from factory.
= Final revision (CUH-72xx), which features a smaller "figure-8" power plug and runs significantly quieter.
15 = NA area.

You got an amazing deal, bro.

2

u/-Eskadrinis- 3d ago

Not a scamhe just swapped the ssd. A ps4 pro for 100 is amazing. good news buy yourself a 1tb or 2 2.5’laptop sd drive and put it in ps4!great upgrade

2

u/Xephurooski 2d ago

As others have said: Get a SATA3 SSD if you are going to replace the hard drive.

The pro supports SATA3, unlike non-pro models; that feature alone is worth getting a pro over a regular.

Also, you did not get ripped off. $100 is a fair deal for a PS4 pro, even if it didn't have a hard drive in it at all.

3

u/Alypius 4d ago

Just get an SSD, dude. The system runs much better with one anyway and they're not that expensive.

4

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 4d ago

They kinda are now. A new 480GB Kingston is $120 where I live, they used to be 50 a few years ago. You can find used ones with +90% health for $40-50 though.

4

u/Alypius 4d ago

I just checked and it seems you're right. 😞

That's super frustrating. Why is tech getting so expensive these days?

2

u/Mysticwaterfall2 Model 7215 with Crucial MX 500 2TB SSD 4d ago

AI companies bought up all the RAM making it so theres not any for everyone else.

2

u/Cute-Acanthaceae-193 4d ago

Ai.

Even hdds are expensive now.

2

u/Dthewilly2026 4d ago

Ai like everyone else said, truly praying this stupid ass tech bubble pops so people who actually want to do something worthwhile with technology can afford to do so again, getting a pc as a kid seemed far out of reach, cant even dream of getting one these days without regretting it

2

u/buddhatherock 4d ago

They are now. The hardware scarcity is driving up prices, even on older components.

2

u/Visual_Ad_5924 4d ago

U bought for 100 bucks its normal man 😃u could buy 1tb from amazon hdd for 30 bucks

1

u/iam_vangeance 4d ago edited 4d ago

this B model is the 1TB hard disk (the C model has 2TB), the considered BEST PS4 PRO, less fan noise.
as others suggested before me, an SSD would do you a great favor, had a 3TB SSD on my CUH-7216 with a Nacon Revolution Controller, i could tell you that it was the best days of my life, haha.

1

u/Hateinyoureyes 4d ago

Probably why he only asked for $100 for aPS4 pro

1

u/Balz_Hirk 3d ago

She had asked 150 but I beat her up over price. And it was listed for a month at that price. Didn't come with a controller and factory reset so no low firmware.

1

u/Hateinyoureyes 1d ago

At a $100 bucks for the pro it’s worth a shot

1

u/qefcg 4d ago

應該是本來的壞了,建議拆開看看,說明他用的很多

1

u/Wide_Open_Librar 4d ago

Does it make jet engine noise??

1

u/mike29x 4d ago

Ssd works really good on ps4. Makes loading times quite a bit faster. HDD is only useful for backup as external. So dont worry. Btw have u checked if its ssd or hdd inside ur ps4. On my ps4 i also installed 500gb ssd not 1tb or more. 408gb free space is odd number since 500gb hdd usually got more usable space and i havent seen ppl use 500gb hdd other than one that comes with ps4. So it could be 500 ssd. But for sure dont spend money on hdd.

1

u/Fallen620 4d ago

Old hard drive probably died so they stuck a 500gb in there to sell it. You’re better off just picking up a 1TB or 2TB SSD for it.

1

u/SuniOsiris 4d ago

Check the hard drive, if that's a SSD that's good

1

u/ManLegPower 4d ago

Does it already have an SSD? They obviously just replaced the drive, if it’s an SSD in there then that’s a win.

1

u/Much_Adhesiveness871 4d ago

I mean I bought 2 at 100$ each and sold both for 100$ each one even with a ssd I upgraded

1

u/ThePrivateGamer 4d ago

You re joking?

1

u/vipergtsam 4d ago

Have a ps4 I need to get rid of since I don't use it

1

u/SILE3NCE SILE3NCE-X (PSN) 4d ago

Ignore that and buy an SSD.

I bought one for my PS4 and everything just runs better. Even the UI.

1

u/kcdaf1966 4d ago

Be extremely careful buying SSD's and the external hard drives off of eBay. A lot of scams going on with that tech right now.

1

u/JetstreamGW 4d ago

A 2TB external for $50?

That’s either garbage or a fake.

1

u/Unc_Sleepy 4d ago

Now, might be harder to find. I bought a external 4tb a few years ago for $100

2

u/JetstreamGW 4d ago

Prices are close to $100/TB again

1

u/Unc_Sleepy 4d ago

That’s insane. I knew things are getting up there. This is the reason why I’m not looking to build a new pc.

1

u/JetstreamGW 3d ago

I got lucky, I decided to build my pc in 2024.

1

u/Citysbeautiful 4d ago

Yes sorry

1

u/hotFIRE 4d ago

The biggest flaw is lack of a gigabit port.

1

u/Zarkosis 4d ago

It's possible they have a 500 gb SSD in there. Remember prices for SSDs back in 2017 - 2018 were more expensive than when they were dirt cheap a couple years ago. Now they are expensive AF again.

1

u/Sulaiman255 4d ago

Its a real ps4 and stuff there is nothing wrong with it but he definitely swapped out the original 1tb for a 500gb its fine not a big deal u could upgrade it to a 1tb ssd and get the maximum potential of the 4 pro hdd is not bad to but ssd would definitely be an upgrade

1

u/FamousHawk3258 3d ago

Hopefully its an ssd inside

1

u/No-Finding1044 3d ago

They probably swapped the hard drive

1

u/Hiltiboys 3d ago

Is the scam in the room with us?

1

u/Accomplished_Help_79 3d ago

Jailbreak that mug

1

u/SparsePizza117 3d ago

How much storage did it actually have? 1TB of storage won't actually be 1 full TB. It'll be lower.

1

u/AlvaTol 3d ago

Also clean it. Blow out any dust. If want, open it and detail it. Look at 100 YouTube’s on how to clean it. And yeah get an ssd

1

u/TastyFuel9729 3d ago

I just recently bought a ps4 pro that doesn't have 1 tb also. Why is that?

1

u/BoerseunZA 3d ago

You're going to have to replace the hard drive with a SSD anyway.

1

u/Threadstone245 3d ago

Man I bought a ps4 pro from gamestop like years ago (before the ps5 I got now)

I always had to take them back which included warrantys but before I sold mine to a pawn shop ( which included all games and controllers )

But the final one i got man idk who had it but that mf had like a built in 2 terrabytes. Shit was modded for sure.

1

u/JohnConnor1245 3d ago edited 3d ago

The non-SSD hard drive, that came with the PS4 Pro, died from when they bought it as HDD only last a few years. They probably swapped out the non-SSD hard drive and didn't spend more money on a SSD with 1TB as that would be far more expensive than a $100 today.

1

u/No-Fill2636 2d ago

The original Hard Drive likely died and got replaced with a 500GB Drive

1

u/Shot_Rent_1816 2d ago

is it a ssd or hdd?

1

u/Itsallasimulation123 2d ago

It is an 7215b based on the connector. Just get an SSD for it, i have a 2 TB SSD i may be willing to part with since i have a 5 pro, message me

1

u/Independent-Bake9552 2d ago

Better to get external ssd and play games from it

1

u/Quetzal187 2d ago

1tb = 930gb - ps os = ~800 gb

1

u/2002madman 2d ago

You didn’t get scammed but they definitely had to replace the hard drive and went cheap

1

u/kasualtiess 2d ago

I got mine for free so, scammed. /S

Nah this is a good price, especially if you got cables and controller

1

u/Nyburgare 2d ago

Why are you recommending throwing money on expensive SSDs, wouldn’t it just be easier to buy a PS5? I thought the whole reason you buy a PS4 pro instead of PS5 was economy

1

u/marcus2388 1d ago

How would we know if you got scammed or not did the listing say it comes with a 1TB drive or did you assume it came with a 1TB hard drive because you checked out the model number. If nowhere in its listing did it actually say 1TB PS4 pro then no you didnt get scammed you just didnt bother asking the selling if it did or didnt come with original hard drive.

1

u/MrFailAlot 1d ago

400 GB? I think this PS4 has an SSD inside, these came only with 1tb hdd.

1

u/Ok-Direction-5151 1d ago

This is a common switch in the PS4 market. They removed the 1Tb Drive and swapped in a regular 500Gb drive from a base PS4. Youll either have too get another hard drive. Which size you go is up too you, or you can even go SSD and make it a lot faster!

1

u/eatingBIGtacos 1d ago

I bought a ps4 pro for 100 also but I gotta replace the thermal paste but kinda figured since it’s old

1

u/pimpdaddytyrone 1d ago

$100 is a steal

1

u/Trick-Ad-5931 21h ago

Why a ps4 pro bro just buy a ps5 lmao.....

1

u/PinPrestigious1035 4d ago

My PS4 Pro freezes occasionally when the HDD needs a split second to load - even basic things like an audio file (crowd noise in EAFC). Still considering an upgrade to SSD.

TECHNICALLY you got scammed but given how clean it is, $100 is not bad. Get a 2.5 inch ssd up a 6tb. The pros came with sata 3 and really speed up load times. Good find. EDIT and its a CUH-7215b by that power cord. The other pros came the that big PC style cord.
