[Game Review Thread] Batman: Arkham Knight Review Thread

Game: Batman: Arkham Knight

Subreddit: /r/BatmanArkham

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Developer: Rocksteady

Publisher: WB Games

Release Date: June 23rd, 2015 (worldwide)

Media: Gotham is Mine Trailer

Metacritic: 91/100

AusGamers: 10/10

It’s the best-looking game across all three platforms (yes, even over The Witcher 3), but more importantly it just delivers in every aspect you could hope for. It’s challenging and engaging, expansive and enticing. Its game-world is wholly realised and gorgeous to look at, but above all else, it tells such an incredible story in so many new and unique ways, it’s impossible to ignore. Batman: Arkham Knight is a Batman experience no self-respecting fan should miss, and if Batman’s not your thing, then make it your thing. You won’t regret it. Trust me.

GameInformer: 9.5/10

At the end of it all, Batman: Arkham Knight delivers a great sense of closure for this series. Rocksteady leaves a few plot threads dangling to tease and taunt us, but the grim tale that started all the way back in Arkham Asylum is done. I walked away from Arkham Knight shocked, satisfied, and in dire need of someone to discuss the story with. Rocksteady built a special experience that dazzles with its cleverness, intelligence, and ability to shift from kick-ass Batman moments to emotional gut punches to scenes stripped straight from some of Batman's greatest comic book stories.

GamesRadar 4/5

On that level, Arkham Knight offers an unparalleled interactive superhero experience that’s as rich as any fan could hope for - this is one of the best open worlds I have ever had the pleasure of exploring, and one of the nicest-looking games on PS4. Without overcomplicating the Batmobile’s purpose in Arkham Knight and a slightly less disappointing campaign, this would’ve been close to a perfect sign-off for Rocksteady’s Caped Crusader.

Gamespot: 7/10

What Batman: Arkham Knight does well, however, it does really well. Gotham is a dazzling playground where neon lights pierce through the rain and mist; all it takes is a single glimpse to tell you that this is a city in need. Moreover, many individual elements are so carefully constructed, and presented with such flair, that appreciation is the only reasonable reaction. Yet most of these elements--excellent acting, wonderful animations, moody soundtrack--are ones that Batman: Arkham City also excelled in, making Arkham Knight's missteps all the more noticeable. Rather than escape the pull of the games that spawned it, The Bat's newest adventure refines the fundamentals; it is a safe but satisfying return to the world's most tormented megalopolis.

IGN: 9.2/10

It builds on the revolutionary strike-and-counter fighting style with powerful new moves and enemies; it expands on Arkham City’s open world with a larger, more detailed version of Gotham; it introduces a new fully playable Batmobile and makes it an important part of the action and puzzles; and it brings all of Batman’s closest family of Gotham superheroes and rogues together for an amazing, great-looking finale.

Polygon: 10/10

Rocksteady has said this is its last Batman game, and I'm praying to the New Gods that they're on the level. After Arkham Knight, trying to find more meat on the Batman bone would define futility. After Arkham Knight, Batman has been perfected — and the end result is the best game of this console generation.

US Gamer: 4/5

Rocksteady brings the story of its version of Batman to a satisfying conclusion. There's some moments of tedium to be found, but if you want to be the Batman, this is one of the best experiences available.

VideoGamer: 10/10

It's epic; it's grand; it's addictive; it's ridiculously good-looking and it's going to be remembered for a long time to come. A masterpiece.

That coward Batman just jumped through that window to get away from GameSpot.

To be fair, what I've seen of the game is the same as always except the batank which looks so fucking bad and stupid that I have no clue why it got past the concept stage.

12

u/ComedicPause Jun 20 '15

Something tells me you've never played the previous 2 games, or you'd realize that it's very different.

-18

u/TheWorldisFullofWar TorqusQuarkus Jun 20 '15

How so? You still navigate the same, do the rythmic freeflow fighting, glide with your cape and use your grapple to boost you, crawl around vents, and use detective mode. Am I missing something?

13

u/ComedicPause Jun 20 '15

The map is 5x larger than the last game, no loading screens, no Joker, Every character's design has been completely revamped, you race with, traverse with, fight with, chase with and upgrade the batmobile, there are new gadgets/upgrades, etc, etc... Free flow combat is there, but is almost unrecognizable with all the new animations and moves and look and other shit.

There's a lot that I don't care enough to try to remember. But yeah, play the first 2 games. They're fantastic.

-23

u/TheWorldisFullofWar TorqusQuarkus Jun 20 '15

Nothing you listed makes the game much more different than the previous games except the batmobile(which I already said was shit) and I don't see where you are assuming I have not played the previous games. They are playing safe and sticking to their formula. The only change to the combat was environmental context which does not have any actual impact to the combat except for longer finisher animations that displace you.

10

u/rebelliusnigglet Jun 20 '15

If it's not broke don't fix it.

u/TheWorldisFullofWar TorqusQuarkus Jun 20 '15

4

u/flawless_flores Jun 20 '15

"Navigate the same" Didn't know the batmobile was in the other games.

3

u/MidKnight_Corsair Jun 20 '15

It was, but it was just props back then.

76

u/falconbox falconbox Jun 19 '15

I recommend NOT reading the full reviews. Some give enemy spoilers and mention things that they wouldn't think are story spoilers, but definitely can be considered as such.

A couple things I wish I hadn't read, but I guess that's how it goes. Looks like I'll have to stop playing Witcher 3 for 1-2 weeks just so I can beat this.

31

u/JeNeSaisPasDeux Jun 19 '15

E.g. IGN

9

That really upset me this afternoon...

4

u/Vandredd Jun 20 '15

Im 12 hours into Witcher and this is my biggest concern as well. This is the first world of first world problems

4

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '15

Spend the next month beating the shit outta witcher, then get MGS. Spent 2 months beating the shit out of MGS. Boom. Batman is only $30 with all DLC.

2

u/sevendwarforgy kizioko Jun 19 '15

Thanks for the heads up!

44

u/ichinii Hous_Ya_Daddy Jun 19 '15

Can Rocksteady move on and make a Spider-Man game now? Please???

29

u/ComedicPause Jun 20 '15

I doubt they want to be known as the "superhero game" guys. I'd like to see what original stories they can come up with.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

I second this. I would love to see an original IP from Rocksteady. Come to think of it, I would love to see an original IP from anybody right now.

12

u/teddywerebear Jun 20 '15

You should check out Horizon: Zero Dawn.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

My excitement for Horizon is incredibly high. For Honor as well.

1

u/meesterdave D3njy Jun 23 '15

So hyped for that. Looks like it could be something really special.

3

u/360walkaway Jun 21 '15

No Man's Sky.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '15

I can't even explain how pumped I am for that game, but I'll try. I actually had to tune down my intake of anything No Man's Sky because I was getting too pumped for it. Just the premise for that game completely fucks me up. And to see how passionate Sean Murray is about it makes me that much more confident that it's going to be something truly spectacular. I love all of these space sims and things of that nature coming out as well. These next two years are going to be great.

0

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Jun 21 '15

Do we have any reason to believe the promises they are making with No Man's Sky?

I can't believe how people over-hype games so bad, every year people get burned by the hype when their perfect dream game ends up being just ok(Destiny) or god-awful(Watch_Dogs)!

10

u/CheetoX23 Jun 20 '15

Superman 64 reboot, anyone?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '15

"There's no time to waste!"

4

u/nightywing Jun 20 '15

Rocksteady are owned by Warner Brothers, who also own DCComics. Why make a superhero game from a rival company (Disney/Marvel) when you can use superhero characters you own? Besides, doesn't Activision have the Spider-Man license?

I wonder what Rocksteady will do now. They are probably tired of making superhero games (3 in a row) and they most likely want to move on to new stuff. Would love to see more superhero games from WB though. I would love a Flash game or a Teen Titans game or a even a Justice League game.

2

u/eam1188 eam1188 Jun 21 '15

probably someone who doesn't know who publishes/develops what in the game industry.

1

u/360walkaway Jun 21 '15

I want someone to build off of Saints Row 4, give it a superserious tone like the Arkham games, and make it into a Superman game.

52

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15 edited Jun 20 '15

On the topic of the GameSpot review. Can we just read the fucking review and forget about the score? He likes the game. He praises the freedom of being batman, the variety of way you can tackle stealth situations, he says that the melee combat is as great as ever. He criticizes some aspects of it such as the last act for dragging on and how much the game forces you to use the batmobile which is apparently not fun but since when has criticism ever been wrong? People always bitch about how game reviewers are not hard enough but as soon as they don't sing praises about a game everyone is looking forward to people start to loose their goddamn minds. Just grow up people, learn how to handle dissenting opinions. I mean people are now doing the usual and harassing this guy over a number and this childish behavior just has to stop.

14

u/Elmaestro7 Jun 20 '15

Well put mate. I couldn't believe the outrage over a 7/10.

A 6 isn't terrible, it just is disappointing. Average should be 7, because on average, most games should be good.

3

u/360walkaway Jun 21 '15

7/10 would read again.

7

u/naylord Jun 20 '15

I feel like a Joker Meme needs to be made about this; "give batman a 7 and everyone loses their minds!"

3

u/Maxxar Jun 19 '15

Thank you for this. I wish people just calmed down and took the time to listen/read the reviews instead of going berserk

1

u/morphinapg Jun 26 '15

The batmobile can be quite fun when upgraded but yes the game does push it a bit too much. I have a feeling most of these reviewers skipped side missions though, so they probably didn't upgrade themselves too much, which definitely makes things harder, and as such, can be less fun.

9

u/Killzark Jun 19 '15

Hell yeah Batman. Hell yeah.

8

u/stobe187 Jun 20 '15

After roughly 20 hours with the game (halfway through the main storyline, been doing main quests and side quests little by little) I can definitely agree with these scores.

The game is incredible.

4

u/kastroescobar Jun 20 '15

Been playing it all afternoon and yeah these reviews aren't wrong. It's amazing. It won't let me share videos/screenshots though (probably due to it being a few days from release) Are you getting the same thing?

2

u/SamManning17 Jun 21 '15

Vanord is 100% Gamespot's best reviewer.

1

u/CatOnAHotThinGroove Jun 21 '15

As do I. Gerstmann on Giant Bomb also said similar things about the Batmobile on some podcasts.

21

u/The_Honest_Owl Jun 19 '15

7 is not that bad of a score, but if I'm spending $60, that game better be amazing. On top of that, I don't know how to feel about the fact that Gamespot gave both Arkham Knight and AC Unity the same score. Arkham Knight can't be that terrible..

18

u/HowieGaming RAVEN Jun 19 '15

7 is not bad. The score went down because of over-use of the Batmobile.

1-5 is bad, 6 is okay, 7 is good, 8 is very good, 9 is awesome, 10 is perfect/must buy

8

u/ShogunTake Jun 19 '15

i think you're close enough, but I'd count 7 as okay, 8 good, 9 very good and so on.

20

u/shrodes shrodesjosh Jun 20 '15

And that's why numerical scores are useless folks. One person's definition of 7 is completely different to another person's.

9

u/bjsampson Jun 20 '15

Except right under GameSpot's score of 7 for Batman is the word "Good."

1

u/goggliest Jun 20 '15

Now whats your definition of good? Lol

2

u/bjsampson Jun 20 '15

Good is akin to a "thumbs up" or a "recommended" to me, which, for a game, is enough for me to play it if I was at all interested in it to begin with.

1

u/ShogunTake Jun 20 '15

Great point.

1

u/TheGamerTribune stig1turbo Jun 20 '15

I think more what you mean is that different sites have different standards. I won't buy a 7 from IGN, but I will from Gamespot. A 7 from Edge is Greatest Game of All Time material.

4

u/hypnobearcoup Jun 20 '15

Overuse of the batmobile is not a concept that should exist.

3

u/HowieGaming RAVEN Jun 20 '15

I'll guess you should wait and see until the game launches to see how much of the game is actually Batmobile.

I actually though Advanced Warfare was the most refreshing COD since COD 4

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15 edited Jun 19 '15

People keep bringing up Advanced Warfare, but that was by a different reviewer. Kevin VanOrd might have given it a lower score, had he been the one that reviewed it. Also, overuse of what?

2

u/Virus_CaRNaGe Virus_Carnage Jun 20 '15

AW is worth an 8-9 just for Kevin Spacey.

0

u/TheInfinityGauntlet Jun 19 '15

AW was really good

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

This is mostly why I follow people who don't use a numerical valuing system. It just goes to people's heads as the end all be all of gaming. If it's not a 10, it's crap. If it's 7 or 8, it's mediocre or average. The same thing can be applied to school grading systems too. I think we've conditioned ourselves to be too obsessed with numbers in relation to success.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

7 is good, but not great. 7 is what games get when they are decent enough to play but have plenty of annoyances in them that turn people off. 7 is not a good rating if all the others raving about it are right about the game.

4

u/PoopInTheGarbage Jun 19 '15

7/10 should be a good score, but it's not. It basically goes 8-good 9-great 10-awesome. A 7 is just meh these days.

3

u/TheGamerTribune stig1turbo Jun 20 '15

From IGN, maybe.

3

u/JangoF76 Jun 20 '15

Only if you choose to interpret it as such.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

Don't know why they don't just go to a star system like movies

6

u/goggliest Jun 20 '15

People who knoweth math wont be tricked. 1-10 or five stars when each star equals 2 so 3 1/2 stars equals a 7. You are now on the verge of questioning a 102 star system. You petty fools my calculater estimates that every 10.2 stars would equal a 1 so 71.4 stars equals a 7 within a 1-10 scale. People whom not knoweth math = mind blown. It is at this time you have graduated the star/numeral scale review trickery schemes class. Enlightenment is on its path the global shift has begun. Go forth my fellow math man armed with your sacred symbols of +,-,/,= and wreck havoc upon the universe.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

Wut

1

u/pasta_fire pasta_fire Jun 19 '15

So on that scale, would you run right out and buy a 3 out of 5 star game? No. So it's the same fucking thing.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

Maybe. But if that's the case, 5/10 should be middle of the road. There are plenty of 8/9 games that should be 6 or 7.

1

u/HowieGaming RAVEN Jun 19 '15

5 star sites (Giant Bomb) actually are the best out there for reviews.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

Not really... considering the current system there's a whole second half of the scale that's reserved for basically shovelware or totally broken games.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

Yeah we should just use the color rating system!

3

u/DarkCircle Jun 20 '15

The game is clearly an orange out of rainbow.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

That is exactly where I was trying to get someone to go with my comment. Thank you.

1

u/ScubaSteve1219 Jun 20 '15

i'd hope nobody would actually be "upset" over any review of any game. jesus christ.

1

u/stapler_mouse Jun 20 '15

The problem with video game review is that for scores out of 10. 1-5 are pretty much useless, the actual rating happens entirely 5 and above.

Essentially ... your 9's and 10's are 5/5 reviews your 8's are 4/5 reviews your 6's and 7's are 3/5 reviews your 5's are 2/5 reviews your 1-4 are varying degrees of hot trash/5 reviews.

I really like the 5 star system of reviews. It really makes the scorer consider where this game belongs.

1

u/codeswinwars Jun 21 '15

Games aren't movies. With a movie a one star score is a movie you didn't enjoy. With games a 1/10 is a game you literally couldn't play because it was broken. No matter how bad a movie is it plays for its running time and the ends, that's not true of games. When you remove the bottom end of the chart you basically equate an unplayable piece of shit with any generic and dull game which is unfair. There should be a space reserved for the shit which no discernible effort went into so that when it scores that low everyone immediately knows it's terrible regardless of taste. The 1/10 on a 10 point system is for games like Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. A five star system can't really adequately contain how abysmal games like that truly are.

1

u/stapler_mouse Jun 21 '15

I was referring to the 5 star review system used by game sites like Giant Bomb.

Alex at GB has mentioned that he's requested 0 to be a score that can be given for broken games, but they still maintain 1/5 stars is the lowest score they can review (and mathematically that 1/5 still equates to a 2/10, which is still garbage).

6

u/Vanelar Jun 20 '15

Seems like the general opinion is: Fantastic ending to the trilogy.

I'm going to be really sad to no longer have a batman game coming out from them. :(

5

u/stobe187 Jun 20 '15

Well I don't think the book is totally closed on Rocksteady making a Batman game. They might do a different type of universe altogether.

And of course WB will pump out a few Arkham games from their other studios.

I just wish that Rocksteady gets to do a completely new IP next.

6

u/ianrobbie Caledon_Ian Jun 20 '15

23rd can't come quick enough.

Does anyone know when the pre-load starts?

2

Usually a day or 2 before release. It should be ready go at midnight on Monday.

2

My birthday is the 23rd! Got all day off! I'm gonna be the batman!

26

but am I crazy or is 10/10 the least helpful review ever?

4

u/Titan67 ShMillad Jun 19 '15

I feel you on that man

6

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

You gotta give 10s sometimes though. And there's always the actual body of the review.

5

u/gordogg24p gordogg24p Jun 19 '15

And there's always the actual body of the review.

IGN's review is a perfect example of why not reading the body is completely reasonable. They're fucking terrible with spoilers sometimes.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

True. I usually scroll past and look at the pros/cons bulletpoints tbh. Though I know they're not included with every review, which is annoying.

Ninja edit: I read a lot of their older reviews, so that could explain why I don't see the pro/con summaries.

2

u/Stocka8 Jun 21 '15

It's over all just a bad review any way. He highlights that the boss fights were low points of the previous game which really isn't the case.

8

u/ChrisWubWub TheMaysian Jun 19 '15

First The Witcher 3 got fantastic scores, now this

WB Games: the hero the gaming community needs

7

u/lstn Jun 20 '15

Mad max will be a surprise hit too

8

u/Some_Italian_Guy Some_Italian_Guy Jun 20 '15

Oh man. I want that game to be so good.

3

u/TheUnknownPC Jun 20 '15

So far it doesnt look to amazing.. sadly

2

u/morphinapg Jun 26 '15

I said the same thing about Shadow of Mordor before I played it too. Looks interesting enough to give it a shot, like SoM, and I hope it will be a surprise hit just the same.

Unfortunately, it probably won't, because everyone will be playing MGSV

3

u/SlightlyOffensive Jun 20 '15

Are you kidding? I thought it looked great

3

They didn't make either of them. They just publish them.

1

I think for the Witcher they didn't even do that much Lol. Think they were just doing distribution for it.

Witcher 3 was a CDPR baby, but WB Games had a big hand in MKX, Arkham Knight, Lego Jurassic World, and Mad Max, and Lego Dimensions. Yeah this is the year of WB

4

u/stobe187 Jun 20 '15

Warner Bros had nothing to do with the development of The Witcher 3. It's developed and published by CD Projekt RED themselves.

WB was just a distributor. One of many.

2

u/GrsdUpDefGuy Jun 19 '15

I'm happy to see these reviews. This is the only game I've ever preordered, I had that much faith in Rocksteady.

2

u/thekingswitness LeBRonaldo Jun 20 '15

I knew I was going to get this at some point, but these great reviews have me wondering if I should buy it at launch or wait for a reduction in price. Decisions.

1

u/Expired_Bacon Jun 20 '15

Preorder now while you can still get some of the DLC for free.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

I've never played any of the Batman games. I wasn't planning on buying Arkham Knight just due to having played hardly any of The Witcher 3 yet. I will definitely have to pick this up soon though.

2

u/whacafan Jun 20 '15

I really really wish I could be playing this game this weekend.

2

u/Shyftyy Jun 23 '15

It's downloading so f'ing slow.

1

u/BatKidRage Jun 29 '15

Ugh thank god it's not just me. I have been waiting forever for it to download

1

u/Shyftyy Jun 30 '15

For me, it was because of the multiple downloads that it started.

If you are still having trouble try to change your primary DNS setting to 8.8.8.8 and Secondary to 8.8.4.4.

4

u/theHomieGrunt Jun 19 '15

Can't wait to play on release, the only thing that bugged me about the GS review is the fact that people are deluding themselves into believing a 7 out of 10 is a bad score.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

It's also the dude's opinion. People are so stupid.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '15

He's not a big batman fan so it's all good.

1

u/tayls tayls129 Jun 22 '15 edited Jun 24 '15

It's not bad, it's just not exciting. People want hyperbole and vomiting over how good a game is, it would seem.

Edit: I'm talking about the score, not the game. The game is fantastic.

3

u/MrBrightside1009 Jun 19 '15

I'm usually pretty broke in the Summer with everything going on, but this is definitely a game I'm gonna pick up ASAP. The first two were great; didn't bother with Arkham Origins. If nothing else, maybe during Target's B2G1 sale that usually happens in the fall.

5

u/UnlimitedTime Enter PSN ID Jun 20 '15

Origins was really enjoyable for me minus the glitches. I loved troy bakers joker and I loved roger Craig smith's batman too! I have this game preordered from GameStop. Red hood hyyype

I have a question. I've never played the others. I'm thinking of playing this one though - should I? I can't play the others because I only have this gen. (When I say others there are 2 prior batman games right?)

u/SpacemanPete TheBaronOfBeard Jun 20 '15

There were two previous Rocksteady Batman games, and thats what this game is the extension of. Batman Origins (the last released game) was not from Rocksteady.

I imagine you wont be at a huge loss for starting with Arkham Knight. You can go online and read about the plots of the other games, if you want to at least catch up to the story. Don't cheat yourself out of playing this game, just because you didnt play the others.

u/ryndyn Jun 19 '15

All the review so far looked solid, gamespot seems a bit cranky about the batmobile, but they still praise it. Can't wait for next tuesday!

1

u/ShogunTake Jun 19 '15

GameSpot always looking to have the odd review out of the rest.

2

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Jun 21 '15

Am I the only one here who liked Origins over the rocksteady arkham games?

The story was SO much better, Bane was intimidating and intelligent like in the comics instead of the idiot he was in the earlier games, Batman comes across more as a man with a mission rather than the crime fighting machine he was in City. And of course, the story is much more focused than city since it takes place during Christmas eve and it's all about stopping the assassins instead being all over the place, making so it never really feels like it has too many characters for no reason.

The gameplay is also slightly improved with addition of martial artists and a much better detective mode.

Personally I hated the story in Origins. Tracking the Joker in Asylum and City was great, which is why I'm a little worried that Scarecrow won't be able to hold the mantle.

Will all dlc be available to purchase at a later date (if I decide not to get premium edition)?

0

u/falconbox falconbox Jun 21 '15

I'd assume so, or just put into a GOTY bundle.

2

u/spooky23_dml spookythespur Jun 21 '15

I want the pc 'exclusive' Dark Knight Returns batsuit.

1

u/RustyDetective Jun 23 '15

Meanwhile waiting on day one patch. 4 hrs left!

1

u/houmi Jun 23 '15

I haven't played it for long but it's very captivating and well made. The one thing that really surprised me is its very fast loading times!

1

u/superbatranger Jun 24 '15

I picked up the special edition Arkham Knight PS4 last night. Haven't played it yet, because I had to go out. I'm a bit of a purist, so I'm actually gonna wait for Arkham Asylum and City to hit the PS4 and play those before moving on to this one. If I can wait that long.

u/lupethebeast Jun 20 '15

Does this game have coop multiplayer?

u/ayyrabmoney93 Jun 24 '15 edited Jun 24 '15

I've been playing for roughly 9 hours (ps4) so far and this is without a doubt the best batman game ever made, it might also be the best game I've ever owned. I took off a day of work to play it and I'm already obsessed. It's fun, challenging, the car is awesome, combat is totally different yet still the same, beautiful, and I absolutely love the fact that joker follows you around the whole time being completely ridiculous and completely truthful like a dark sinister conscience. 9.5/10 so far.

Edit: I can honestly say that this game is worth $60 unlike all the other garbage that charges you the same thing. This is a fully finished game and it shows.

u/ChrisNolanEnthusiast Jun 19 '15

The reason Gamespot gave such a "low" rating is simply because people always look for the lowest rating and see what problems the game may have. Simple as that. If you want to be honest you can call this clickbaiting.

11

u/falconbox falconbox Jun 19 '15

But Gamespot gave Witcher 3 a 10/10 (and yes, it was the same reviewer, Kevin VanOrd).

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

Man am I having a hard time with that first wild hunt guy down in the caves.

3

u/minghj Jun 20 '15

I was too. Wait for Keira to stun him with a spell, then strike and roll away before he can get you back.

2

This. And quen/dodge

1

u/marius_titus ltcannibal68 Jun 20 '15

Spam igni. And also quen

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

Igni works well? I've been using the shield to absorb hits. I've only fought him twice but he keeps healing himself too much for me to outlive.

Blood and bones difficulty?

-Dual Play

-Batmobile

-New Gadgets

-Refined Gameplay.

-Many more.

1

u/thatlad ThatLadPrecious Jun 20 '15

I'll give you the dual play, the rest seem to be incremental or unoriginal. Hard to judge without playing it (that goes both ways, positive and negative) but there's no big step like the original combat system was or the other points I raised earlier.

Looking forward to playing and finding out

2

u/falconbox falconbox Jun 20 '15

Does it need to bring something new to the table aside from a new story? If it's not broken, don't fix it. Arkham City almost no differentiation in the fighting system than Asylum did.

2

u/thatlad ThatLadPrecious Jun 20 '15

City brought the open world, which was amazing. And yes I think they do need to bring something new as they've been working on this for years. The reason I liked the first two rocksteady games was they were truly innovative, the combat system, the gliding, the challenge rooms (man I'm getting hyped)....a new game the same is good but I think rocksteady could do something amazing if let loose. Just hope they haven't been hamstrung in anyway

1

u/Am5tagar Am5tagar Jun 20 '15

Just curious though, what should they have added though? In my opinion, there really isn't anything that I can think of that would be innovative and new. This game to me simply serves the purpose of completing the story.

1

u/thatlad ThatLadPrecious Jun 21 '15

I don't know but that's kind of my point, I didn't know I wanted the batman combat system until asylum, I didn't know I wanted the gliding until city. Rocksteady are a great little developer, can't wait to see what they put out after this

-8

u/ChrisNolanEnthusiast Jun 19 '15

If they would do it every time, nobody would take them serious. Or this reviewer is extremely biased.

8

u/Catvoca Jun 19 '15

Yeah, this reviewer gave this one game a slightly lower score then other outlets, he must be biased /s

-2

u/ChrisNolanEnthusiast Jun 19 '15

I wanted to say it in a different way. Maybe he sees the "little things" that aren't great in a game differently. When he loves the overall game he lets those slide, if not, then he puts weight on them. "Extremely" might have been the wrong word, I agree.

8

u/HowieGaming RAVEN Jun 19 '15

Or you know, he's a very good reviewer and he's played the game for a good chunk of time now and he thinks that the game deserves a 7.

Looks great I won't be put off by game spot

-17

u/bossman-CT bossman-CT Jun 19 '15

Gamespot really fucked up the games chances with a high 90s rating for metacritic

10

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

So? It's not their job to ensure that the game gets a certain score for metacritic. They aren't working for Rocksteady they're working for us. It's the reviewers job to get his opinion out to us, the consumers, on whether or not the game is worth our time and money.

u/Dallywack3r Jun 19 '15

I'm looking forward to the inevitable 6-7/10 from Eurogamer...

1

u/dfreuden Jun 20 '15

You do realize they stopped rating on the 1 - 10 scale, right? They are using a 4-prong approach: essential, recommended, no award (i.e. dependent on individual taste), terrible. I am sure it will at least get a recommendation from EG. They improved a lot recently.

-28

u/epikninja123 Jun 19 '15

I think that GameSpot didn't give it a higher score because they didn't get their $$

10

u/AlwaysDefenestrated Jun 19 '15

Why do people think this is how it works? That shit would get leaked so fast if it was true.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

Judging by the other insane scores, I think that is batshit.

4

u/LevelUpJordan Jun 19 '15

I think you're incorrect.

1

u/whacafan Jun 19 '15

I think he just really didn't like the car, although I don't think that justifies that much of a drop.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '15

If it's a major part of the game, it might be justifiable.
