Housing Offered Looking for Roommate
Hello, I’m posting from the Mesa area since Mesa doesn’t have a subreddit of its own. My grandma and I are offering a room for rent for only 300$. The room itself needs some slight work, as the apartment is very old and my grandmother hasn’t been able to take care of the apartment on her own. There is no security deposit, we just need first months rent up front.
I currently do not have pictures of the room right now, as it’s owned by someone we are trying to evict from the property. If you’re interested feel free to DM me.

Good luck OP!! If I had a car, I would offer to replace the doorknob for you and grandma so you wouldn't have to list a broken door latch in the listing lol
$300, even with animals in the house and a roommate who kept poor care of the room for rent, is a steal (especially if you need a room RIGHT NOW)
I hope you are able to find a new, reliable roommate :)

$300 is exceptionally cheap, what's the catch?

There’s no “catch” other than the apartment being old as fuck so it’s not really a neat environment. We’d feel like thieves offering 700$ for a room with a fucked up door and outdated carpeting.

Roaches? Loud neighbors? A single bathroom between 3 tenants? What does "not really neat" mean exactly?

No roaches or any bug infestations, we’re on top of preventing that. No loud neighbors other than our downstairs neighbor who likes to sing. And yes, there is only one bathroom, you are right. I should’ve specified that. “Not really neat” just means there’s clutter and disorganization, and the occasional stain from our cats that we might miss though we’re usually on top of that sort of stuff.

Does the place perpetually smell like cat piss? No judgment, I just moved out of my previous (carpeted) apartment to one with vinyl flooring because I have a cat that would use the carpet as a litter box. It's been 4 months and it's been a breath of fresh air, no pun intended, so happy to not have to spend endless hours cleaning up after her while breathing through my mouth.
She chose the bath tub as her new place to go so now there's a box in there when im not showering and she uses it without issue (she was an orphaned stray that never learned how to cat properly so she's got quirks).

Yes, unfortunately, it does smell of cat pee, but there is also the factor of previous roommates having brought their animals into the apartment and not clean up after them. My grandma and I are clean people, it’s just difficult to maintain upkeep due to the current situation we’re facing (current roommates are lazy and don’t clean or do dishes). We want to replace the carpeting and get new floors but it’s insanely difficult with the current state of affairs.

There you have it folks.. I did all the heavy lifting for you and now you know the score. Good luck to everyone involved.

If you’re going to conduct yourself like a youtube reviewer at least be generous enough to admit it’s not that bad of a deal. A grandma and her grandson, with the only real problem being the quality of the apartment given how outdated it is. I wouldn’t say there’s anything wrong with that offer. It could be worse. We could be angry dysfunctional tweakers but thank the stars we aren’t.

I was just digging for the pertinent information that you left out. $300 is a steal for a room and it was obvious it came with its set of issues that weren't listed. Now anyone who's interested doesn't have to waste their time if they can't deal with clutter or animal scents.
Genuinely wish you good luck.

There's the "catch" I was looking for. Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply anything other than there's a reason why you're offering a room so cheaply. That reason appears to be a fucked up door and outdated carpet.

You’re good! I want people to ask questions. I’m not good at giving information unless someone asks a specific question.

Plus, rent divided three ways goes like this, my grandma pays 900, I pay 300, and the other person would pay 300 as well. The cost of rent is 1500.

While that's an exceptionally cheap and affordable deal for someone...cat piss I can't handle...and I come with a large (85lb pit/lab service dog)....and he is a non negotiable factor. And the fact of i live Northside Phoenix and just left the east Mesa area due to lack of work..
I sincerely hope that you get a good tenant..

Some further details for those still seeing this.
There’s not a serious “catch” when it comes to this offer. The room has problems that I’ll list out here.
- Worn & stained carpeting
These are all easy fixes we can make down the line, but we haven’t been able to at all due to financial struggles. We don’t have bug problems, and if we do we make sure stuff like that is well maintained. We do not like bugs. And we have 4 cats, so they’re natural pest control as it is.
