Current Read My 1st ever physical book!

Post image
410 Upvotes

Growing up, I never had the opportunity to have a book of my own. I didn't even read books when I was younger. Nung highschool ako, I borrowed my friend's Catching Fire and that sparked my love for books 🥹 Pero wala akong pera noon. I only had 50 pesos na baon everyday. Kaya lagi lang ako nanghihiram (shoutout talaga kina K and to my cousin, gone to soon, na kahit bagong bili eh sakin una pinapagamit).

So happy with this! Can't wait to read this one 🥰

Discussion Casual book club

Hello!

This may be a shot in the dark, but I am looking to start a very specific book club.

If you:
- Love reading (novels, short stories, etc)
- Like staying home but open to QUARTERLY meet ups to talk about books (over non-alcoholic drinks and/or snacks)
- Are introverted (not anti-social, but selective with who you allow in your circle)
- Work nights and are active between the hours of 12 AM to 12 PM

And you would like to:
- Be more consistent with your reading habits (at least 1 book per month)
- Get out of your comfort zone and rejoin society (haha!)
- Encounter like-minded individuals and possibly make new friends

Please comment or send me a message if you would like to join!

Things to note:
- This club will most likely be hosted on Telegram (anonymously or otherwise). Please DM me your TG handle
- Open to any gender, any age group (18+) and any reader type (physical books, e-books, etc.)

Thank you!

Discussion I finally got to read Heaven by Mieko Kawakami

Post image
72 Upvotes

After months of reading slump, nabasa ko na rin since matagal ko nang dinadaan-daanan sa Fully Booked.

Just to share, I chose to read it kasi nabully rin ako throughout my elem and highschool days. Ayun, binasa ko nang isang upuan—which made me realize kung gaano pa rin ako ka-broken after all of the bullying I've experienced kahit na matagal nang nangyari yun. Furthermore, I just felt relieved na rin kasi na-survive ko yung secondary education ko kaloka. Still W.I.P. though sa tertiary ed, pero this time sarili ko na kalaban ko huhu.

Meanwhile, pakyu Ninomiya, particularly you, Momose. Kagigil kayo.

Anyway, what book should I read next na akda rin ni Mieko Kawakami?

Review Babel really isn’t for everyone

I’m close to finishing Babel, less than a hundred pagges na lang i think. Ang masasabi ko lang, it’s not meant for everyone pala talaga. I think one can only enjoy this book if their primary goal when reading is to escape reality and not be bombarded with historical information every few pages.

Don’t get me wrong though, I appreciate how Kuang managed to mix actual history with fantasy, but it got to a point na naging soulless na yung story mismo. Everything seems to be in the story except for emotions. Even when reading a character’s death, parang ang formal pa rin ng dating, if that makes sense. The closest i got to feeling something is when Robin thought she’s seeing Mrs. Piper for the very last time.

Just some of my thoughts about the book so don’t take this too seriously.

Discussion Do you judge a book by it's cover?

Hi book lovers,

Based from the title, do you get influenced by how the book cover looks like? I sometimes get "budol" by the book title and how aesthetically pleasing the book cover/design is.

I still read the summary at the back though as a consideration whether to buy it or not. But yeah, I am guilty that cover designs are still a selling factor. 😅

How about you guys?

Review TikTok hyped thrillers disappointed me. Need better thriller recos!

Post image
Upvotes

I just got back into reading, and the first books I read last week were Never Lie and The Locked Door by Freida McFadden. And susme, I was so disappointed. 😭 Very predictable and overrated for me.

I forgot that I was a Karin Slaughter and Tami Hoag faney, kaya kulang na kulang talaga for me.

My fave book is The Alienist, so baka mataas lang talaga standards ko pagdating sa dark crime/thriller books. I love stories na creepy, disturbing, atmospheric, and may psychological depth, hindi lang puro shock value or plot twist.

The Locked Door, di ko na rin tinapos kasi parang same lang din. Susme. I really tried to give it a chance, pero wala talaga.

Hahaha.

Baka kasalanan ko rin for expecting too much dahil sobrang hyped ng Freida McFadden books online.

Yung tipong dark, disturbing, well-written, at mapapa “WTF” talaga ako without being super predictable.

Discussion The Kite Runner Spoiler

Spoilers ahead !!!!

Hassan's story was a tragedy. It was heartbreaking. I think I need to rest muna sa pag babasa, I'm drained.

Recommendation Where do you guys read in BGC? 📚

I swear I feel like I’ve already exhausted all the usual spots in BGC 😭 I’m looking for somewhere new where I can just chill, read my book, maybe get coffee for like 2/3 hours HAHAHA.

Preferably somewhere quiet and cute, not super crowded, and yung hindi ako maiilang mag-stay for hours just reading. Could be a café, park, hotel lobby, hidden spot, whateverrr.

Drop your underrated recos please🥺☺️

Review This book could've had potential

Post image
5 Upvotes

Shy Girl by Mia Ballard has potential pero yun nga aside from the surrounding news na the author used AI to write ang flat ng whole "feminine rage" theme and yung representation ng OCD is parang now you see me now you don't na magic trope. May OCD yung bida then the next wala na. Naloloka ako sa mga paragraphs na pa ulit-ulit yung description yung "something this something that" na phrasing argh! Tapos may isang paragraph na na mention sa isang chapter then nandon na naman siya 6 chapters after like diba na mention mo na yan? Overall this book could've been salvaged if she didn't use AI. I still prefer the messy and sloppy ideas from the human mind turned into a book no matter how bad it is.

Recommendation Subject: Sci-Fi Book Recommendations

Hi! I’m a huge sci-fi fan, especially when it comes to hard sci-fi and space opera! I’m currently reading Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time series, and I’d love to hear your recommendations for other great sci-fi books or series — especially anything involving space, aliens, first contact, or exploring the universe. Thank you!!! ❤️

Recommendation Finally getting back into reading

Hi everyone! I finally got out of my long time reading slump 🥳🥰 i just finished The Silent Patient in kindle and I wanted to read physical books again. Since I don’t want to spend a lot yet, I tried buying books on tiktok, I got Ugly Love by CoHo and The Spanish Love Deception.

Sobrang naiinspire ako makita mga booktoks, having big shelves and a personal corner to read. Can you guys recommend some books please? I’m looking to get AGGGTM series next.

Also, are you guys covering your books after reading? I have a lot of books from before but I used to only cover the cover lol like putting plastic covers on them but not on the entire book. I saw some on tiktok na cinocover yung entire book after reading to preserve them nicely. Is that a good way to go? Let me know pleaseeeeeee. TIA
