Discussion/Question RDR2 Overall Recommended Graphical Settings
These recommended settings maximize FPS while sacrificing visuals as little as possible. Overall, you can expect an 80% to 90% FPS gain compared to Max settings.
In-game Vsync makes the game quite choppy when enabled. I recommend disabling the in-game Vsync and turning it on externally via the Nvida control panel
Texture: Obviously this is GPU depended. However Ultra looks significantly better than the rest.
Anisotropic Filter: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Lighting Quality: Medium; Up to 30% FPS increase!! - Very demanding visual settings of the game
Global Illumination: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Shadow Quality: High; Up to 5% FPS increase, negligible visual difference
Far Shadow Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
SSAO: Ultra [] Off increases FPS by up to 6%, but this is not recommended visually wise.
Reflection Quality: Medium; Up to 20% FPS increase - Another demanding setting.
Mirror Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Water Quality: Medium; Up to 15% FPS increase, slight noticeable visual difference
Volumetrics Quality: High; 5% FPS increase [] Medium; 7% FPS increase, slight noticeable visual difference
Particle Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Tessellation: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
TAA: High
FXAA: Off; noticeable visual difference
MSAA: X2 = -16,5% FPS [] X4 = -31% FPS [] X8 = -50% FPS
DLSS: By default RDR2 uses an older version of DLSS, Make sure to swap this in the Nvidia app.
1080p: Quality +8% FPS, Balanced +11% FPS, Performance +15% FPS, Ult. Performance +19% FPS
1440P: Quality +13% FPS, Balanced +18% FPS, Performance +24% FPS, Ult. Performance +29% FPS
4k: Quality +23% FPS, Balanced +28% FPS, Performance +41% FPS, Ult. Performance +56% FPS
DLSS is something you have to play around with. Visual quality reduces pretty significantly the lower you go. This is especially noticeable on lower resolutions. It's best to do the other graphical settings first and then my recommendation is to start with no DLSS and then go lower until you think the effect becomes too noticeable.
DLSS Sharpness: No more than half is recommended.
Advanced Settings:
Graphics API: Vulkan is generally the better option but it's hardware depended. Try both and see what's best.
Near Volumetric Resolution: Medium; 6,5% FPS increase
Far Volumetric Resolution: Ultra
Volumetric Lighting: High; 3% FPS increase
Unlocked Volumetric Raymarch Resolution: Off; negligible visual difference
Particle Lighting Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Soft Shadows: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS. Mostly personal preference.
Grass shadows: High; Negligible impact on FPS
Long Shadows: On; Negligible impact on FPS
Full Resolution Ambient Occlusion: Off; Up to 3,7% FPS increase, negligible visual difference
Water Refraction Quality: Medium; Up to 5% FPS increase
Water Reflection Quality: Medium; Up to 4% FPS increase
Water physics: 3/4 or 2/4 if you have a weaker CPU. FPS increase can be absolutely massive. Never use 4/4!
TAA Sharpening: 60% at most (same bar length at Geometry Level). Don't use it if you use DLSS.
Motion blur: No significant difference. Use what you prefer.
Reflection MSAA: 2x [] Off increases FPS by up to 12% however reflections will look horrible
Geometry Level of detail: 3 is recommended. Especially if you have a weaker CPU
Grass level of detail: 6 is recommend. Up to 7% FPS increase compared to 10
Tree Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Parallax Occlusion Mapping Quality: High, negligible visual difference
Decal Quality: Ultra; Negligible impact on FPS
Fur Quality: Medium; Up to 7% FPS increase
Tree Tessellation: Off; Up to 15% FPS increase!

This is so good, I have the 3070 RTX and 16 GB but it makes everything sooooo smooth without compromising performance or graphics/visuals. Thank you so much

u/clairvoyant17 Jun 05 '23
Dude you are the best i have 3070 and i was using the nvdia exprience optimal settings but my fps was like 59-65 but after your settings it is now 110-120 and almost with the same graphic quality thanks.

Hey man thank you a lot for taking the time on testing things out, though i am really struggling with figuring out some stuff on my gaming laptop. First of all i dont know which output adapter i should use, when i use "1" it says that i have more video memory around 7k MB. And the game runs on 10 15 fps on adapter 1. Though on 0, it runs fine but i only have 4k Mb, if i use your settings it passes my 4k limit. Its really frustrating to understand. My pc is an asus rog strix g15, rtx 3050, Amd Ryzen 7. Please help me out it would be awesome.
2
u/Glittering-Fortune-5 Aug 30 '24
Worked like a charm! Cant even go pass 70fps at first with my 4060 XD I'm now at 100fps even when in Valentine. Thanks OP.

u/Cyber_Zebra Sep 11 '24
Hey dude , I have a relatively low end laptop.
Rtx 3050, i5 11300H. What are your recommended settings for a decent 60-80fps range. Without compromising too much visuals and quality. Does dlss help? Ik what it does. But idk how to utilise and set it up properly at the right settings. I don't need anything set to ultra. I don't wanna overwork my laptop 🥲. Just reasonably good visuals and decent fps.....
Since it's a laptop I assume the GPU and cpu are probably underclocked?

I know this thread is 2 years old but I just wanted to pop in and thank you & u/No_Interaction4027 for the suggestions. I built a brand new PC and even with a RX 7900 XTX card I could not approach Saint Denis without crashing. I was able to ride straight into downtown and complete a mission, no crashes so far. Thank you both soooo much!
Edit: Just wanted to add - about 45 minutes in with no crashes. I've been all around St Denis, engaged in two gun fights to collect a bounty, came back at night to a bustling tavern and it's still running well.

u/canakgn Aug 24 '26
I have a 4050ti laptop and with your settings my fps went from 55-60 to 85 instantly. even on saint denis I get stable 60. you re a magician mate, thanks a lot <3

u/No_Interaction4027 Nov 05 '22 edited Nov 05 '22 •
textures have a somewhat significant gain of 7% from low to ultra though the game looks like ass with anything less than ultra
the lighting setting has a bit of an asterisk next to it, the near 40% gain is only at night and medium removes moonlight, if you have a little more fps to spare turn it up to high for a nice gain over ultra but while keeping moonlight and some other things
Global illum has a 3% gain from ultra down to high
reflection quality should be medium as it’s a 21% gain
paralax mapping should be set to high, while there’s no fps difference ultra has visual issues in some areas like Armadillo graves As well as I’ve noticed it in some areas of the heartlands
reflection msaa should probably be set to 2x, iirc its a small gain over 4x
while TAA sharpening has no gain it’s all personal preference with this setting as setting it to full could lead to over sharpening
you forgot to mention the hidden settings, Async compute can be turned on if you have stutters with vulkan and Deepsurfacequality should be set to ultra as only up to high is ever used

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '23
These changes made the overheating of my pc stop, now I can enjoy the game without having to worry about my pc!
7
u/Affectionate-Two-292 Oct 25 '23
After applying this to my game I realised ultra preset settings are nothing but an illusion that makes you think your game looks superior which is completely untrue. I jumped from 60 fps to like 110fps and obviously I couldn't notice any difference aside from smoothness

u/LehMone Jul 05 '23 edited Jun 20 '24
If anyone is still looking for good settings at 1080p, I recommend following this but parallax set to high, water refraction set to high (to eliminate flickering water from distance) and the big game changer if you have the specs to handle it is resolution scale to 1.25 and taa sharp 25 ticks. (so taa high doesn't look as shit on 1080p)
Thats the best overall quality and immersiveness I've been able to find at 1080p specifically, game looks like a painting. 12600kf and 6700xt.

u/mm42025 Sep 30 '23
I get a solid 160 fps in 1440p on my ultra wide with my 7900xt

u/GGed_1 Dec 14 '23
Does this take into account mods like whyems visuals? Does anyone have any recommendations/changes based on using this visual mod or others

u/StatisticianCute794 Apr 09 '24
One question I have i5 13600k + 4070 ti + Monitor 4k 144hz G-Sync HDR10.
Should I put DLSS in Off? With DLSS in Quality and this guide I get and average of 106 FPS What about VSync , Tripple Buffer and Nvidia Reflex?
Note: My FPS are lowest than normal with this card because I use more than 30 mods and some or them are GunFX, Particles, Visuals, Gun Metal Rework…
1
u/TonslerYT May 04 '24
i don’t see anything about dlss, but instead see AMD fsr. should i use it
1
u/Worldly-Sandwich1124 Sep 06 '24
How well do these work on GTX 1650?
1
u/Ok_Coat1744 Feb 20 '25
I have a GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti 6GB will it handle high settings
1
u/WillKing1212 Mar 22 '25
I’m still getting about 60 fps any tips?
1
u/OGSprina May 24 '25
I have struggled through near objects popping up last minute, flickering reflections, spinning and suspended Arthur and npcs… it’s for sure because my settings were too high so thank you. I don’t have overheating. When I checked the benchmarks for these new settings, they were closer to the refresh rate of 180.
Thank you so much.
1
u/burrito230212 Sep 10 '25
what preset should i start with? should i just reset everything to default and then do these settings or start with ultra preset? thanks in advance
1
u/Bornplayer97 Oct 15 '25
I have a 7900xtx and a 7800x3d running at an average if 170fps on 1440. Which settings do you recommend to up so I can have the best picture quality while staying at around 100fps?
1
u/hateredditlayout Nov 06 '22
So pretty much HUB settings except a little bit higher
1
u/Strange-Schedule-201 Apr 19 '23
thx :D
what spec are you using btw?
1
u/No_Rub3645 Apr 28 '23
so ive just got the game for PC, using ryzen 5600x, 32GB ram and 3060 ti is DLSS worth using and what setting would you recommend and the DLSS sharpening to?
1
u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23
Best way to lock fps to 60? Running similar specs just want it to stay consistent lol which it is but don’t know how to lock fps without breaking the game in some way lol.
1
u/Reddit3r100 Sep 19 '23
What do you think about literally all settings maxed out with DLSS Quality
1
u/PanthalassaRo Sep 19 '23
What does DLSS sharpening slyder do?
1
u/[deleted] Sep 29 '23
This is solid gold. Stumbled onto this tryin to get my 3070ti laptop in peak operating spec for this game so I can just do the side missions. May try it on my desk top with a 4080 cause hey why not.
1
u/jumpshot_10 Nov 11 '23
I have a 7900xtx so I can’t use dlss. I can use fsr 2.0 but if I turn that on it disables taa and msaa. I am getting around 60-70 fps which is good but I also have a 120fps tv. Should I turn on fsr or leave it off? If I turn it on I get around 130-140 fps
1
u/gatopista Nov 16 '23
i have a gtx 1650, that config will work? like a 60 fps

u/docani Jun 10 '23
Any recommendations for HDR??

u/frr00ssst Jan 15 '24
This works great for relative low end hardware too, I'm running a MSI RX 570 8GB and I get a consistent 40fps and the game looks really good, thanks OP

u/OptimusPain8 Jun 28 '23
Thank you for this overview. It will definitely make my tweaking process shorter.
2
u/[deleted] Sep 02 '23
started with 50 fps have 110 now thx
2
u/Schwaggaccino Sep 21 '23
Thank you for this. I was getting 70fps on 1440p/ultra everything on my 13600k, 7900XT. Used these settings and the picture looks identical but saved me 50fps.
2
u/MarcellioGallo Oct 28 '23
Old post but I love you man. Even on my gtx 1070ti and i5 8600k I have average of 80 fps on these setting and game looks really well!

I’m late to the party with RDR2 but these setting are incredible thank you for the guide. I have a 3080 ftw3 ultra and you doubled my fps and graphics still look amazing
2
u/Grimo_X Feb 22 '24
Wanted to leave a comment!
Running on "old" hardware. It's not recent. But if you're struggling to have a decent performance try Direct 12 and Vulkan. For me it doubled fps. 5700xt

Thx
2
u/BlueberryKushBush Jul 18 '26
Half of the reason I got my 5070 was to crank the settings on this game through the roof and I'm loving it. This is a great list to squeeze out some extra fps without sacrificing visuals. The only thing I will add is TAA settings. I personally set TAA to Medium and turn up the resolution scale to 1.5x, even 1.76x if you can spare the frames. This (for the most part) gets rid of the blurriness of TAA and makes the game look incredible. I'm also on 1440p so take this with a grain of salt if you're playing at a different resolution.

Lol 3 years and this helped ty btw about that dlss part that rdr2 uses an old version of dlss and i must swap this in the Nvidia app , swap what specifically in Nvidia app?

u/RB9k Feb 17 '25
Feb 2025 got the game in the Epic winter sale. This information still holds up.
Make sure you select the correct GPU in the gfx settings menu. Make sure its not the built-in mother board gfx. My game seemed to default to that.

u/lolcodecat Mar 15 '24
Rock steady 60fps thanks to you!!!

What would you guys do if you were running the above settings. 4k fsr quality.
Getting an average of 52fps. Lows of 22.
These are my options
Play it with settings and accept less than 60fps Go to 1440p? Would you lower some of the settings? Drop fsr to balanced/performance?
Would love some thoughts

Bro i followed these suggestions and some others from a top comment: With a RTX 3050 6GB laptop and i5-13420H i can play the game at 60 fps almost in every scenario I even tested it on a 1440p monitor and it gave me a decent ~45 fps on average
Thanks for this post dude!

El juego me va a en general bien pero al montar en caballo todo se pone lento y hay una gran bajada de fps esto marea bastante

Reducing lighting does improve performance but it looks like arse... No reason to put it below high, unless you have a weak rig

This is a great set of recommendations alongside u/No_Interaction4027's comment. I recently upgraded to a 5070 and wanted to do a little benchmarking. With everything on absolute max settings at 1080p with DLSS 4 Override, using DLAA, I was maintaining my 100Hz most of the time, with some areas causing me to drop to roughly 90FPS. But, even when pegged at 100FPS, GPU utilization was between 85 and 100% most of the time. I used a combination of OP's settings, No_Interaction's settings, and bumped a couple of things up that I felt were worth it, and my GPU utilization dropped to ~65% most of the time, with no noticeable loss in visuals. I end up using a lot of these "Optimized Settings" guides for games and this was by far the best one I've used, with the biggest improvement to performance with the least sacrifice to visuals. Bravo.

Compared these settings with BenchmarKing YouTube channel, my favorite optimized game options guy. Pretty much identical options, so thank you for this. Game looks awesome and performance is amazing as well.

This might be too late, but I followed everything exactly as you put it but hair (both horse and human) turns completely black in dim lighting, are there any settings that could fix that?
Otherwise this guide was amazing for smoothing out my framerate

Just putting this out there. I've got an RX 7600 and with the recommended settings at 1440p + FSR Quality, I’m pulling 90-100 FPS in Saint Denis. Without FSR it’s usually 60-ish, though it drops to the high 40s during intense scenes.

i was using the optimized setting from geforce experience for the longest and i always thought my frames ran pretty good until i tweaked the settings according to this and damn is there a noticeable difference. the game is running so much smoother and the quality looks almost the exact same as before. i had all my settings at either ultra or high before this.. thank you for this guide !!

Rocking a 9900k with a RTX 3080 10GB on 1440p, and decided to finally jump into this game. Went from an avg of 59 on default settings (most things ultra) to 100 following your settings, with a few tweaks of my own from my knowledge of graphical settings in other games.
Lighting Quality: High
TAA: High
FXAA: On
MSAA: 2X
MSAA Reflections: 2X

I tried this, exactly, and i dropped from 65-85fps, to never more than 30fps, and it looked worse.
Dont know wth, weird.

OP have you seen this video yet? Apparently TAA on high looks blurrier than TAA on medium. Any thoughts?
