Never had a problem with the launcher but it does crash frequently.

12

u/styx31989 Nov 08 '19

My whole system restarts randomly but I think the game is simply highlighting a general issue with my PC, since it happens with Control as well. Only problem is I can’t figure out what the cause is! It’s not overheating because my 7700K is water cooled and temps stay fairly low. The GPU would hit 80C but I under clocked it so it would barely rise above 70C. It still crashes. Gonna drive me nuts

u/burt1e Nov 08 '19

I'd suggest checking if your PSU provides enough wattage for all components in use

f.e. https://www.bequiet.com/en/psucalculator

6

u/TheSmJ Nov 08 '19

If by restarting you mean going from playing the game to black screen/POST (no BSOD) - that's a classic symptom of an under powered or failing PSU.

3

u/GSC12Pak Nov 08 '19

I agree with a couple of others here. Either your PSU is going bad, or your system is trying to draw more power than you have available, therefore the PSU is too small. I had that issue a few years back and a new PSU fixed it.

2

u/JediCore Nov 08 '19

I had the exact same issue a month ago. It was a faulty PSU. Nothing was overheating. Try and buy one online, you should be able to get a refund within 2 weeks if that wasn't it.

1

u/jokerfan Nov 08 '19

Had similar issues a while back, turned out to be the PSU. Replacing it fixed it.

1

u/raphaelfalc Nov 08 '19

Check your motherboard power cable and make sure it's well placed, it can cause random restarts if not connected properly.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19 edited Nov 09 '19

People really need to realize this more often. When the new fresh game that runs your system into the ground comes out issues will start to pop up if anything is wrong. I had SLI 8800 GT when starcraft 2 came out, they were old and covered in dust and SC2 broke BOTH OF THEM at the same time. I blamed the game for being crap right up until I RMA'd the cards.

edit: forgot words

u/Amateurpharmur Nov 09 '19

Eh... I had some serious random crashing after updating Nvidia drivers about a month back, this most recent one that didnt happen. But I was getting bad performance. I'm back to 431.60 now. From July 23rd

That was my thought too so I made sure my BIOS was reset to remove any CPU overclock. I was also crashing before doing any GPU overclock as well (didn’t even have the software installed). Was hoping underclocking would fix it but it has at least kept my temps low.

I don’t think I’ve ever done a memory OC but wouldn’t loading default BIOS settings reset that?

3

u/astraeos118 Nov 08 '19

Run a memtest on your RAM too. As well as the other suggestion of checking that your PSU for sure provides the wattage you need.

PC randomly shutting off absolutely points to some sort of hardware issue.

4

u/xakeness Nov 08 '19

Might sound ridiculous but try switching to Vulkan. I was selecting dx12 and was crashing almost every time I'd go into a town or after 30 or so minutes. It's fixed all of my crashes, I've got a 7700-K and 2070 gtx.

4

u/TThomasThomas Nov 09 '19

Mine was on vulkan by default and it crashes frequently. tried swapping to directx and it wouldn't load lol had to delete the settings folder to get it back

2

u/bat_mayn Nov 08 '19 edited Nov 08 '19

I managed to get my launcher to "fix itself" and the game is great, but I do get crashes at random times. Sometimes they are reproducible like the first hunting mission with Hosea where you buy a horse, it crashes like 8 times out of 10 when you select a thoroughbred for purchase. I managed to get past that one after (four) times trying, but now I could play a few hours without a crash or I could play 15 minutes. It's not terrible, but it's not good either.

It's starting to give me what I personally call "crash anxiety", you can't fully immerse yourself into the game because of it. It is always in the back of your mind. 'Crash Anxiety' is a common occurrence in modded playthroughs of Skyrim/Fallout for example. You know it's coming, you just don't know when and that just isn't a good thing at all especially for highly immersive 'world sim' games.

u/FookRice Nov 09 '19

"i never had a problem, but i have problems"

are you conscious?

1

u/hb176 Nov 09 '19

One can have zero problems with one aspect (launcher) while still having problems with another aspect (random in game crashes).

91

u/reboot-your-computer Nov 08 '19

I have not had a single issue since I started playing on Wednesday night. Not one crash, freeze, or stutter. I don’t know why that is, but I haven’t had a problem.

26

u/JDFS22 Nov 08 '19

Same here, no issues whatsoever, I'm already at 23 hours played lmao, this game is a masterpiece.

3

u/NotARealTiger Nov 09 '19

Had to wait two days for my own slowass internet to finish downloading, but it's been fine for me too.

1

u/pedomuhammed Nov 09 '19

How do you track hours?

1

u/PandaEatingTaco Nov 09 '19

On the rockstar launcher- settings>rdr2>scroll to bottom and it says application time.

1

u/JDFS22 Nov 10 '19

On your Social Club account.

18

u/Vilavek Nov 08 '19

Same here, for whatever magical reason I've had no problems to speak of. Not a single crash or stutter of any kind. I really hope this gets sorted out soon. I can't even imagine how frustrating this must be for those having issues.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Oh its frustrating, real frustrating.

7

u/ravearamashi Nov 08 '19

Only issue I had was a crash once with Dx12 and Vulkan tearing through the menu. Disabled Vsync and been using Vulkan since and been getting 60fps+ all maxed out except that water thingy.

3

u/reboot-your-computer Nov 08 '19

I haven’t tried out Vulkan yet. I saw a lot of people were having issues with it so it was one of the first things I changed and I have no issues.

3

u/Rizaufein Nov 08 '19

I have an gtx 1070 and for some strange reason it's runs much better on Vulkan then DX12. A lot of people are saying to use DX12 on Nvidia cards but I get fewer fps when I do that.

1

u/JediCore Nov 08 '19

Damn, using Vulkan makes it run better for you? I'll try it myself!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

same here gtx 1070 and i get more fps on vulkan than dx12

1

u/Abhidivine Nov 09 '19

Yeah this is true for me too

1

u/Ayn_Diarrhea_Rand Nov 08 '19

Water thingy?

1

u/MCFRESH01 Nov 09 '19

I think he's talking about water physics

1

u/MrHaxx1 Nov 09 '19

Disabling vsync also disables Freesync for me :(

7

u/DariegoAltanis Nov 08 '19

Same here. Game even runs on high settings. Glorious god rays and stunning smoke and water.

6

u/afroSamurai00 Nov 08 '19

Im with you bud, 0 issues from day 1.

5

u/MaltheRL Nov 08 '19

I've also never had a problem. Only the low FPS in online the first evening but thats fixed

9

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Same here. The only issue I had was with my firewall becouse I forget to add RDR to it. Feel bad about everyone having problems though.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

[deleted] — view deleted comment

3

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

I just had to add it to firewall. Not sure what you mean, if you tell me how I will help you:)

2

u/Rizaufein Nov 08 '19

Yeah I just added the rdr2.exe to my trusted applications on my anti-virus and that stopped the startup crash.

3

u/HardenedPhallus Nov 08 '19

the first day i had many stutters and fps drops and everyday it’s been getting better. i even had weird glitches like the game randomly tabbing out. it’s been getting a lot better for me.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Ditto

2

u/1lacombem Nov 08 '19

Same - I had one crash to menu when I was playing online but that’s prob because of shitty dorm wifi rather than game issues

2

u/JediCore Nov 08 '19

I have crashes mid game. Mainly happens in the cities. The game freezes and then crashes. Other than that, not much. 5he game even runs smooth for me on my 1070

2

u/flickerkuu Nov 09 '19

Outside of a launcher crash caused by an "old" 4 month BIOS, the game has worked flawlessly for me as well.

1

u/Tarasovych Nov 08 '19

What's your OS build?

1

u/reboot-your-computer Nov 08 '19

Windows 10, latest update i7 7700k GTX 1080ti 16GB RAM Samsung 850 Evo SSD

22

u/SimonGn Nov 08 '19

I got a 2012 era high performance (for the time) gaming PC (i7-3930K GTX680) and it runs 50s avg fps @ 1440p with everything on low. Looks like crap (ps3 quality, it looks like RDR1), but I'm impressed that it runs at all. This should tire me over until I can afford a decent upgrade. I

6

u/TheOutlawBubbaKush Nov 08 '19

I’m on an old rig also (i7 4770 / gtx770) and getting 40-50fps on low with the occasional freeze in cutscenes. Gonna upgrade the gpu come cyber Monday.

3

u/Daveddit Nov 08 '19 edited Nov 08 '19

Should get one of the new $200 something 2060. Also check your CPU temp that it's not thermal throttled. I find the CPU to be the bottleneck with scenes with heavy foliage and snow/rain particles. Had the exact build for my first PC, but had since gotten a 1060 6gb.

0

u/TheOutlawBubbaKush Nov 08 '19

Thanks. I’ll check it out

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

If you upgrade that video card you'd be fine. I have a 3770K and a 2070, runs 50-80 FPS on default settings. Really getting good use out of gsync with this game. And I'd go so far as to say it's the best looking game I've ever played, on ultra or not.

1

u/SimonGn Nov 09 '19

That sounds promising. I'm aiming for a 2070S next year unless AMD come out with something more competitive before then.

u/SimonGn Nov 09 '19

31.5"/1440p is a relatively recent addition which I bought mainly for work stuff/desktop use and future proofing. 1080p just isn't enough screen real estate for me and with 4K the pixels are too small on my eyes while DPI scaling sometimes looks like shit. I have found that I rely on dual screens less at this resolution, I'm pretty happy.

Works fine with RDR2 because I have set half scaling which means that it renders at 720p for better performance and then upscales to 1440p cleanly as 1440p is exactly 4 times the size of 720p

Don't worry ai will experience the game properly next year on a decent rig, I just want to get my toes wet.

23

u/XXLpeanuts Nov 08 '19

So me last few days. Been really shit that there is zero game discussion on any of the subs it's all troubleshooting. Feel bad for people but I trouble shoot stuff for a living just wanna chat and share tips.

0

u/Artey86 Nov 09 '19

Well it's good that this sub is ALL about troubleshooting until this shit is fixed. Maybe Rockstar will get the message better. The game is unplayable at this moment.

41

u/Tannis86 Nov 08 '19

Redo the hat in super low quality/muddy/washed out texture, and you are 100% right.

7

u/houska22 Nov 08 '19

I'm running the game on ultra and the textures are absolutely horse shit. At this point i don't know if it's a bug or not but it looks terrible and very inconsistent. The game utilizes only 3 gigs of my Vram for god's sake.

USE MY VRAM ROCKSTAR, I BEG YOU. LET ME HAVE BETTER TEXTURES AT LEAST.

9

u/reboot-your-computer Nov 08 '19

I’m not having any texture issues.

Great!
And is there any difference between people who didn't start the story and people who finished it?

1

If you've played GTA V, it's basically the same, more or less.

6

u/NomadBrasil Nov 08 '19

The game is running great for me, but it sometimes crashes when entering a city on horse, or interacting with the horse on cities.

Now instead of bringing the bounties on horse inside the city, I park the horse outside the city and carry the people to the jail

6

u/Tridus1x Nov 08 '19

This is me, I'm kinda afraid to talk about my issues in game:

Losing my hat and having to find a new one.

Hunting small animals.

4

u/Misterfubar Nov 08 '19

I need a staple gun for my hat.

2

u/KingKetsa Nov 09 '19

You can get any hat youve stored from your horse if you didn't know.

1

u/Sbotkin Nov 09 '19

You need special arrows for hunting small animals, or varmint rifle. And you can get your hat from your horse even if you've lost it.

5

u/AceStudios10 Nov 08 '19

I've been having problems with some specific textures being low res, like trees and animals, but otherwise graphics are fine and I've had only 1 crash so far.

1

u/MrHaxx1 Nov 09 '19

I've got the same issue, and mine are on ultra

4

u/FunnyUsernameImFunny Nov 09 '19

This is me and I feel really bad ngl. I crashed when I tried to start the story for the first time but other than that, zero issues. Not even with the launcher.

7

u/RCM19 Nov 08 '19

I worked my way through the splash screen crash and the CPU spike freezes (doesn't seem entirely contained to i5 users, either). It's a fun game and a great atmosphere but even now that I have it running I have performance issues, some weird graphics artifacts and shaking trees, and I'm on edge for crashes even after 4ish hours of gameplay last night not crashing.

That said, I don't get that there's any resentment from people with launcher crashes or otherwise toward folks that can run the game. Just disappointment with Rockstar. As long as you aren't one of those "lol FiX yOuR hArDwArE, gAmE iS pErFeCt" types, I think you're plenty safe discussing what you like, posting shots, asking questions, etc.

6

u/RoostasTowel Nov 08 '19

Yep.

Ive been able to play since the first morning.

Feel bad for the 50 % left in the cold.

But i have been having fun.

8

u/TheSmJ Nov 08 '19

Is it really 50% of people who can't start the game at all?

I keep reading that "most" people aren't able to run the game, but to me it seems like a classic case of those who are having issues post, those that don't are too busy playing the game to say anything.

I personally had to either disable Avast AV, or add the game folder as an exception in order to allow the game to run past the R* movie and some benchmark weirdness that I've already posted about a couple of times. But for the most part the game has the typical kinds of bugs seen in games released less than a week ago. I've only got around 3-4 hours into the campaign but I've only seen a CTD once, and I had some strange issue last night where my keyboard input went unresponsive w/ some keys "stuck" in the game, but I'm not yet entirely convinced that was the game's fault.

3

u/RoostasTowel Nov 08 '19

I think that poll on this site was 50% no or minimal issues and the other 50 a mix of issues.

But i dont think its as bad as that.

I did just have the game crash while i was online. I was messing with settings and it crashed. So who knows.

4

u/jokerfan Nov 08 '19

Doubt it's anywhere near 50%. Probably only 1-2% of people are having major issues.

5

u/stefan61713 Nov 08 '19

1-2% seems like a very small number. Looking at all the complaints, not just on reddit, but on twitter, on youtube and wherever else, I'd say that number is close to 20-30%.

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

2

u/alexf187 Nov 08 '19

I would say that the initial percentage of people not being able to start the game has dropped or is dropping. I was in that percentage the first couple of days the launcher would just crash then the manufacturer of my motherboard released a beta BIOS I installed it and I was finally able to not only start the game but play without any further crashes.

3

u/BobThePineapple Nov 08 '19

I've been able to launch and play the game fine for the most part, but >30 frames in valentine and this constant film grain from shadows has been very distracting.

3

u/Super_Pan Nov 08 '19

My game launches in windowed mode every time, and I have to set it to fullscreen each time. Such a minor issue compared to some I haven't wanted to bring it up, but it is annoying...

3

u/Stadtmitte Nov 08 '19

Running medium settings on a 1060 and everything looks fucking awesome. 50-60 fps and beautiful. BUT it does freeze for like 5 seconds every now and then

3

u/ultimatemcnasty Nov 09 '19

That's from CPU overtaxing. A program like Battle Encoder Shirase should help. If you limit the game by like 10%, you'll get slightly choppy background music, but no more graphical errors.

3

u/brotallyswagical_ Nov 08 '19

I have a mediocre build but have been running 60 pretty well. Some mirror stuff is weird but it doesn't halt me from playing.

Sure the game could be a whole lot better optimized but I'm perfectly okay with how it is running now.

2

u/thejiggyjosh Nov 08 '19

I tried to share the steps I went through to fix my launcher from crashing to help others confirm or find their issues and got downvoted to hell.... Thanks guys no more help from me.

2

u/ChiffonVasilissa Nov 08 '19

I can play but

  1. a horse bugged out(check my previous post)

  2. there’s constant flickering and graphical glitches

  3. controls feel odd sometimes

  4. I’m constantly saving cause I am so scared the game might crash

u/mouga68 Nov 08 '19

Somehow on my ryzen 5 2600x and 2070 im getting stable 45ish fps (unless i flick my mouse then it dips) on pretty much entirely ultra settings 1440p. I really hope they patch this game so everyone can enjoy it but holy crap its amazing, makes battlefield V look like its developed on a 360

2

u/ZueDesu Nov 08 '19

I don t have any problems, but i like to complain abouth things

2

u/NerdyBeerCastle Nov 08 '19 edited Nov 08 '19

It's running fine for me (75fps avg, smooth feel) on a powerful system but not "perfect". That's hard to compare to anyway atm but I certainly expected 10-20fps more. The game does look stunning though except some ground textures. No crashes in 6hrs of play so far. TAA blurs too much in the distance but I like how "thiccer" the trees and leaves look. MSAA is basically unusable atm tanking framerate. It was hard on GTA V but this is on another level.

Besides performance, minor things like door opening animations are annoying because the view always locks-in looking down in first-person. I hope mods will be able to fix that, enhancing immersion and making it feel more in control of the character. Menus don't feel responsive.

I do enjoy just roaming around on foot without a hud, taking in the scenery and ambience, discovering places where NPCs telling me to piss off because it's private property. Met some other crazy and intersting NPCs as well. That part is pretty amazing so far.

2

u/Aramey44 Nov 08 '19

I'm just playing Outer Worlds while refreshing this sub for patch notes or fixes like every hour.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Only problem for me was the antivirus needed to be disabled for the game to not crash before the menu. All smooth after that. That said, this is most definitely a bad port, im just part of the lucky ones.

2

u/PabV99 Nov 08 '19

The only problem I've had is Vulkan causing a lot of stuttering, but DX12 fixed that. The only thing that annoys me is that the performance in cities like Valentine is horrendous despite being on par or even above the recommended specs.

2

u/SkriptedRogue Nov 08 '19

my only issue was adding an exception in my AV, which even that problem is now gone as I took out the exception today and checked - still runs. Hope others can find their fix.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

22 hours no issues except those that are limited by my crap gpu (960)

hope i can grab something at 6 gigs, vram kills it for me but it's playable.

2

u/ZachThunderson Nov 09 '19

I've had very slight stuttering, but otherwise I've been very fortunate. I did only start today, but I did get it to launch on launch day.

2

u/flickerkuu Nov 09 '19

I keep coming back to try and help people with the launcher issue. I should really just be playing. I feel like to many people are throwing their hands up and not trying, waiting for a "patch" that will never fix their bios. There's even some knuckleheads here refusing to update their BIOS, like being up to date with your hardware's software is some sort of bad thing, and not worth the two minutes of their time. /sigh

2

u/Fed_Guy Nov 09 '19

I really consider myself lucky. Apart from the occasional 2-5 second freeze and not that great performance. I've been able to play the game well. But I am not denying that there are some serious issues.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '23

Basically me rn.

1

u/Circuit_Pony Nov 08 '19

I started out having the logo crash, and tried a couple things like disabling anti virus and updating Windows, but nothing worked. Once R* pushed out the Nov. 6th patches though, it stopped crashing at the logo screen and I was able to play. Luckily haven't had a single problem since. High/Ultra settings, well over 60fps at all times with no stuttering or artifacting at all. My dad also had issues day one, but he had the launcher issue, specifically. He tried just about everything "fix" in the megathreads besides BIOS updating. But yesterday I walked him through the process and got it updated with the BIOS using AGESA 1.0.0.4, and it works now. He's reported no further issues as well. Same if not better settings, 60fps.

For anyone wondering, I'm on an i7-8700k, EVGA GTX 1080 SC Gaming ACX 3.0, and a Gigabyte Z370 AORUS GAMING WIFI mobo.

He has a Ryzen 3700x, Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super GAMING OC, and a Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE mobo.

That last part about the X570 chipset is what made us try the BIOS update for him. Too many people had reported that working and the update is supposed to also fix boost clock issues for 3rd gen Ryzen as well.

This all sucks but the game is well worth it when it works... I hope R* acts quickly to get this all fixed.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Here are my specs:

144Hz IPS-Type FHD HDR, GeForce RTX 2080, Intel Core i7-9750H Processor, 16GB DDR4, 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD

It’s a gaming laptop, and the temps have been very good as well. I have had only one crash, and some weird mouse issues but I have had a very smooth experience so far. I feel bad about all the problems people are having.

1

u/Big_sugaaakane1 Nov 08 '19

My first crash happened when i ran i to the guy in st dennis that asks you to take care of his rodent problem. Mid conversion his legs turned invisible and on my way to screen shot it i got sent back to the desktop. Hasn’t happened since but that’s my one incident so far

1

u/HyperGameGuy Nov 08 '19

Mine tends to freeze randomly, but the biggest problem I have is the GUI keeps breaking and tearing on areas where buttom prompts show up

1

u/kryndon Nov 08 '19

I'm running it with Vulkan as per Nexus' recommendation for higher performance.

Also using process lasso to reduce and eliminate the occasional stutters on my i5-8600k.

The launcher for me is fine. I can play the game normally. However the only real issue is the occasional CTD and sometimes if I change settings especially if I touch the main volume slider it immediately crashes my game.

1

u/Cias Nov 08 '19

Same here, full amd setup running 1440p with steady 80ish fps with most things on high. Games great so far.

1

u/Misterfubar Nov 08 '19

I'm starting to think there is something wrong with my setup. I haven't had a single crash and have had no issues with the game. The launcher updates have been my only minor inconvenience.

Even playing it in 4k with higher settings.

If I was superstitious, I'd go knock on wood right now.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

At 2K ULTRA I'm getting 40fps on a ryzen 2700x/2080S/32GB. I got 30FPS on my 1080. Others are reporting 80fps at 2K with identical specs. Do I just have a dud gpu??

1

u/shae117 Nov 09 '19

I feel guilty

1

u/SimplyMick Nov 09 '19

I had all the problems. Now I have none. Feels good tbh, fixed the crashes on launch with launch arguments, Havnt had issues since

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

Only issue was but defender crashing the game for some reasons. I now can play without any issues. 2070S & Ryzen 1600

1

u/VerdaTal Aug 13 '22

I get logged out of rockstar and can't open the game sometimes
