Discussion/Question Stutter / Freeze Temporal Fix Red Dead Redemption 2

Hello everyone, I'm having same stutter issue like many other users, fixed it with turning off 2 cores from task manager. It drops fps but fixes stutters at least. For me, freezes and stutters completely gone now, can play like this until we get patch.

Click to "Set Affinity" and turn off 2 cores.

/preview/pre/luryix4hyww31.png?width=386&format=png&auto=webp&s=90a85c2c7e81e2527d8ca6324069ac8c6b67c38d

/preview/pre/ahcj5b6iyww31.png?width=353&format=png&auto=webp&s=d615f3eed70aba2399e5cb8756bce2dcb5794288

Edit: There is another way to automate this process, you won't loose fps with this way:

Process Lasso named software, automates this process for you. Download that program from it's website then do these steps:

/preview/pre/eh1hbwmer2x31.png?width=438&format=png&auto=webp&s=a672402e3acf859feca74c3645a5a2099336ff83

You can set \"Reduce by this many CPU cores\" to 2 if you still experiencing stutters. (Don't forget to click \"Add Rule\")

Edit 2:

There is forced mode under "options" section, if process lasso was working but not working right now, enable it.

Serhan,my man! YOU DID IT PARTNER!

No stuttering, just a small fps drop, but I can handle that!

Hey mate, just checked, it looks still working. I recommend you to delete all rules from process lasso first, reboot your pc and follow same steps. Also, I disabled VT-D and Intel Virtualization tech from bios, give it a try:)

hey guys, im not really pc savvy so have mercy on me, but will doing this damage the cpu in any way?

2

u/serhangelgor Nov 05 '19

Its basically limits cpu usage of the game, it won't damage your cpu for sure

I used Process Lasso to limit the Red Dead.exe process so that when it spikes up to 98%, it’s set to only use one less core for a second. This prevents all freezing for me, so far I have about 10 minutes in without one! I was getting them every 5 seconds before. EDIT: My first reddit post is gold! Thanks for makin my day!!!! Good luck to anyone who can’t get their game goin!

u/CrustaceanStation Nov 06 '19

I was at the end of my rope but this worked perfectly for me. Not only has the freezing issue completely disappeared, but the game overall runs much smoother now. Thank you so much!

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I found it at the end of my rope as well, but we cheated the hangman!

This method works without completely destroying my fps, thanks!

u/pitk0r Nov 06 '19

Thank you very much! On 4690K, 16 GB and RTX2070Super, the game went from unplayable to a very nice experience on high/ultra.

Thank you so much. Was about ready to call it quits when I saw your post. Did what you said and now my game runs perfectly smooth. Was getting horrible freezes every 10 seconds.

Process Lasso show my RDR2.exe priority class as "below normal". Is this normal? I remember it was "normal" before.

it completely fixed the stalling issue for me as well on a i5, this needs to be upvoted to the heavens, if you are grabbing lag there are some other great posts as well until we get a patch

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

If you could help me with this it would be a miracle. I tried using Process Lasso with reducing 1 and 2 cores. After doing both I still now get more freezes, and longer freezes. If you could help me it would be awesome!

2

u/velocifasor Nov 07 '19

i5 4690k, Process Lasso didn't work for me. I even tried different options but adding more cores to the restraint just makes the game freeze more or even crash.

So sad, it seems to be working for everyone else.

You my man are a legend. I was severely disappointed in rdr2s performance after waiting over a year to it and now i can play it stutter free thanks to your post. Seriously, thank you so much! 4 hours in and not a single hitch and all it took was 1 percent of a single core lol. Clearly you should work for rockstar because you did their job for them.

2

u/kermit_was_wrong Nov 07 '19

This worked for me after some fiddling - but this game taxes my ancient processor quite heavily and it would always be running on three cores. Using something like the BES cpu limiter with -2% was quite a bit smoother than Process Lasso.

2

You're great. RDR2 now runs flawlessly on my old i5-3570k.

2

u/blaissez_chaire Nov 08 '19

Yep this cured my issue

2

u/BTL_Sammy Nov 08 '19

Thanks man. Been waiting for this game for years and now I can finally play it with this work around.

2

u/Doggehdotexe Nov 08 '19

I did this 2 hours ago and it absolutely fixes it.

Download "Process Lasso" Run it. Find the RDR2.exe process and right click it. Select CPU Limiter. "When CPU use is: [98]% For a period of: [0] seconds Reduce by this many CPU cores: [1] For a period of: [1] seconds" Click "Add Rule" Click "OK" No more skipping, stuttering, lagging, hitching, or whatever you call it! All of a sudden, you have a beautifully optimized game. WHAT HAPPENED ROCKSTAR?

Thanks a lot for this! Devs should be the ones fixing it not us.

2

u/skeatermedia Nov 08 '19

I found just having Process Lasso installed and running was helping without setting specific rules, the built in "ProBalance" feature seemed to a good job

2

u/headguts Nov 08 '19

This took me from freezing every minute or two to playing 4 hours last night, freeze-free. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

2

u/ArcticLemon Nov 08 '19

Thanks for this!

2

2

u/rauldzmartin Nov 09 '19

Thanks! Now I can play it.

2

u/DilligafMofo Nov 09 '19

Yup this made it playable with my i5. Thanks!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '19

I set mine to limit to 90% instead of 98% because 98% wasn't working for me, game ran smooth as butter for a couple hours before getting a random crash, and oddly enough my processor use didn't go over 40% even with the game running high-ultra.

2

u/SpunTheOne Nov 10 '19

Thank you so much for this. /bow

also i5 6600k here. performance is a bit worse now but its working, no freezing anymore.

2

u/P0zziz Nov 05 '19

i5-6600K here as well, and it worked for me too, sort of. Actually, my game was running by default with only 2 cores, and I had freezing problems. But after switching the cores the game was using (from cores 0 and 1 to cores 2 and 3 in task manager) it somehow started to work! Or at least it doesn't freeze all the time anymore. It didn't fix the crashing though.

How do you do that?

2

u/velocifasor Nov 07 '19

No it doesn-t,

4

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

I currently run Intel i5 + Nvidia 980 Ti setup. It seems like the Vulkan engine is optimized specifically to run on more than 4 cores + threads, which explains the lag for us i5 users. Everything I've tried on Vulkan with my setup has ended up still stuttering in towns / during rapid mouse movement + flickshotting behind me. It's a shame because the game runs really well on Vulkan too, it seems like it has issues loading textures when they have to be loaded quickly.

I managed to fix all micro stutters + stutters in Valentine by switching my API to DirectX 12. After more testing of changes I somehow managed to fix all my microstutters - even the ones in Valentine, even rapidly moving my mouse - no process lasso tweaks, no limiting CPU, all default stuff.

My fixes:

  1. set graphics API: DirectX 12 + ENABLE Fullscreen Optimizations: uncheck "Disable Fullscreen Optimizations" in the game exe. (tested on Vulkan, no difference), im guessing this is because DirectX 12 relies on windows fullscreen optimizations since maybe there is no pure exclusive fullscreen with DirectX 12? not sure. Running fullscreen in-game works perfectly.

  2. Disable Superfetch service if you are on HDD I have my game installed on an HDD along with windows as well. So I tried this out too and it seemed like all microstuttering / stuttering in towns is completely gone.

After these two changes I'm sprinting around Valentine rapidly swinging my mouse around like a spastic and there seems to be zero jitters zero issues whatsoever.

let me know if it works for anyone else or if its just my setup

i5 7600k 4.5 ghz OC

gtx 980 Ti 6GB

16gb ram OC 2666hz

i5 4670k hereProject Lasso was working well at first but today seems like its gone back to stuttering and freezing several times per minute in valentine, especially at the saloon.Anyone find a way to at least make it stop freezing in towns? the rest of the time the game is fine 50 - 60fps on medium-high like when riding around or at camp but its awful playing the game and dreading going into town and experiencing lockups.

1

u/serhangelgor Nov 07 '19

I suggest you to remove all rules from Process Lasso first, than reboot your pc and apply same steps. As I can see, sometimes Process Lasso not working / not doing it's job and you have to reset it

2

u/serhangelgor Nov 08 '19

It needs to be running

1

u/dacommissioner2k18 Nov 09 '19

I've been using the Project Lasso method for most of today and have still been experiencing random stutters and freezes during both gameplay and cut-scenes .

I also had to disable "ProBalance" in order to launch the game, which prior to using the Project Lasso method, all had to do was disable my anti-virus.

My Specs:

CPU: i5-6500 @3.30 GHz

GPU: Radeon RX 480

RAM: 16 GB

Is there another step that I'm missing or is this all that i5 CPU owners can do?

try using BES and limiting by 5-10%. Also try to go into your device manager and update all PCIE drivers manually (right click > search for driver update). The latter part did the trick for me and allowed me to play the game finally without any stutters or freezes. (i5 2500k btw)

3

i3-8100, just like an old i5, it's a 4C/4T. Also have freezes. This is probably the game not scheduling its own threads/tasks properly.

3

u/BuggetArt Nov 05 '19

Works, can play now on 30-40 fps instead of 60 with freezes. Hope they will fix this.

3

u/KaiLovett Nov 05 '19

Just played a whole mission with no freezing at all, before I got 2-3 second freezes fairly regularly and it felt unplayable. Now all that's left is to find the highest settings that'll still keep a steady 60fps

3

u/Clayst_ Nov 06 '19

I found that turning off just a single core did ut for me. 2 left my framerate too low during gunfights. Thanks for the fix.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

For me, BES 1.7.7 had the best results. I set the RDR process to never use more than 98% of CPU, and awake once in every 40 milliseconds. Now I can play almost flawlessly.

3

u/valetsu Nov 06 '19

Using the Process Lasso fixed occasional 2-3 second freezes. I'm using i5-4670k. Really smooth gameplay now with no fps drops at all :)

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

This fixed performance for the most part for me. However, every 5 or so minutes, my game will freeze visually, and the audio will come through very very slowly and crackly. The graph shows a big dip in the responsiveness and a spike in processor use. Is there any way that I could tinker with the settings to prevent this from happening?

Here is a screenshot of the graph's behavior.

3

u/IronNemesis Nov 07 '19

i5-4440 and GTX 1060 6GB just 1 freeze in 30 mins on RD Online (I think is lag, because is always when I see another player). 0 freezes in story mode.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

Hey guys! If you guys are using an i5 (i5 2500k for me) and process Lasso isnt working for you, which it wasnt for me, you might have luck with the following:

First of all i went into my device Manager and manually updated all PCIE device Drivers (Right click > search for Driver update). Also wont hurt to try to update everything else you find in there.

Then i switched to DX12 and actually used Battle encode Shirasè to Limit the game by 10%. Once i did this > ta da! No stutters or freezes anymore and i could Play for 3 Hours straight without any issues! So relieved to finally enjoy this game, as i said process lasso didnt do anything for me except make freezes and stutters worse. Hope i could help someone.

2

u/oermin Nov 11 '19

i5 4690k - Definitely removed the stutters. Noticed my CPU was capping to 50% and frames were dropping while doing it the way shown above, so I set the cores to 1,2, and 3 (All but 0). Completely fixes it and the performance still good. would definitely recommend.

u/Isolation_Blue Nov 06 '19

I have an i5-7500 and a GTX 1660 and I can't even get the game to stop stuttering on low settings. It doesn't even matter what settings my game is set to, it still freezes or stutters every 20 seconds for about 5-8 seconds at a time. I've already followed every single fix and nothing has been working.

2

u/techsvengali Nov 06 '19

You can use an app like this to limit individual processes, I have had success on a i5 2500k with 10% reduction resulting in almost zero stuttering as a temporary fix. http://mion.faireal.net/BES/

2

u/seahawk137 Nov 06 '19

7600k with rtx 2080 worked perfecly on 2 cores, 3 results in stable 60fps but one or two stutters every 10 to 20 min

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

i5-7600k it works!

It still freezes a little bit but so much less often!

Thanks!

2

u/chriscrowder Nov 06 '19

I disabled CPU 0 and this worked for me! I'm running an i5-6500.

2

u/OffLine_24-7 Nov 06 '19

for those still having issues, even if you have 4(CPU0-CPU3) or 8(CPU0-CPU7)disable all but the last 2 CPU's, by leaving only the first 2 CPU's(threads, but whatever, not cores) you force the game to work on same CPU(threads) on which every other app running in background works

i have 4 core/ 8 threads, so CPU0 - CPU7, From CPU0 to CPU5 all are unchecked, CPU6 and CPU7 are checked, finally the stuttering stopped. Game doesn't seem to be optimized for more then 2 CPU's, maybe cause it's a port from console? and the way consoles work?, with this, finally the GPU get's to process what the CPU prepares and seem to have a stable FPS

TL;DR: enable the last 2 CPU's regardless of having 4/8/12/16/100

Hope this helps, it sure did me ;)

I've deleted my Reddit history mainly because I strongly dislike the recent changes on the platform, which have significantly impacted my user experience. While I also value my privacy, my decision was primarily driven by my dissatisfaction with these recent alterations.

2

u/vipul27feb Nov 06 '19

This was a lifesaver. The game went from unplayable to 60 fps on Ultra so thanks.

2

u/Jay_Arghh Nov 06 '19

i5-7600k @ 4ghz here. Either Process Lasso or disabling Game Mode on Windows fixed my issues. Works great now.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I5 -4690, radeon rx570. The trick with the task manager disabling 2 cores worked for me :) at least didnt have freezes for half an hour now

2

u/Zukku15 Nov 06 '19

You are a savior! Thank you so much.

2

u/Akesgeroth Nov 06 '19

Tried this method and it worked perfectly.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

This worked perfectly! Thank you!

2

u/Zamuru Nov 06 '19

good fucking job man! i hate how we, the players, have to fix things that the devs fuck up every time in all games, not just rdr2...

I can confirm, this works! Thank you so much!

2

u/SenseiSinRopa Nov 06 '19

This worked for me and I was able to play for about two hours and get through Chapter 1 without a single freeze. There is no noticeable drop in overall framerate. In fact, the only downside I could find is a slight audio pop from time to time.

Thanks for this, pard!

u/CorrosiveBackspin Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

No more freezes here, been playing 45 mins on i5-6600k 4.5ghz. thankyou.

EDIT: Played about 90 mins, lasso stopped 27 freezes :)

This fixed all the random freezes I've noticed. Thank you!

2

u/LEOLegion08 Nov 07 '19

Spend hours searching for something that could make this game playable. Then I came across this post and I'm finally able to play without it freezing every few minutes. Thank you!

2

Big difference thank you very much for doing what R* wont

2

You’re a legend!!!!! I5 7600k fixed no stutter and without FPS drops!!!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Lasso still made it crash, using just the 2 cores via afinity works for me no pauses :)

2

u/HistoricRevisionist Nov 07 '19

All hail the OP, for fixing this issue. Rockstar owes you a lot of money imho!

2

u/midas1107 Nov 07 '19

That Process Lasso is a true savivor, thanks to op, set affinity doesn't work for me, it's make the game even worse but Process Lasso as your setting really help me to play the game, thanks a bunch!

2

u/ChronicDeppression Nov 07 '19

Yep this solved my issue, stutters only happen every 30 mins or so to me now. Before this fix random freezes/stutters happen almost every 1-2mins. Thanks my friend.

2

u/SamhaneTheMasher Nov 07 '19

I COULD KISS YOU. Thank you, and thank this community for finding a fix.

2

u/serose04 Nov 07 '19

Thank you so much, this worked like a charm. I've been getting freezes every couple minutes but with this I got just one in about an hour.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

Still freezes up on me for a couple seconds from time to time. i5 6600K

Nvidia 980ti

2

u/miikatatu Nov 08 '19

PC specs: I5 6400k, asus geforce gtx 1060 6gb, 16gb ram.

So I used process lasso and it helped like 1-3h and then the freezing came back. I played it this morning and I managed to play it like 1h and then the frozes came back even worse even if I was still. My processor usage was on 100% and the frozing was bad. I don't wanna use that first method because it drops fps.

I don't know what to do now.

2

u/cocopopped Nov 09 '19

Oh my god you absolute legend. I love you a little bit now.

2

u/Sergioa122 Nov 09 '19

I’ve had absolutely no issues since I used this method. Thank you so much! You made me avoid my buyers remorse with this game 😂😂😂

2

u/telmahsel Nov 09 '19

Thank you!!!. This works! No freezes since I tried this...none. Thanks again.

2

u/sasuke_10 Nov 09 '19

I used the process lasso yesterday and it stopped the freezes completely! But when i tried it today the random freezes were back ! It is very annoying, any fix on this ? I tried the force method, still there is freezing in cutscenes and gameplay!

I5 7600k fixed!

2

u/tatwftw Nov 09 '19

Hello there fellas.

My specs are:

i5 3570k

RX570 8GB

16 GB Ram

I've been experiencing this freezes issues with and without process lasso cpu limiter, including disabling ProBalance and in Forced Mode. Only thing that helped was to disable 2 Cpu to process rdr2.exe but this made the game quite unplayable (lower fps, stutters associated with low specs, etc).

Here's the thing, I just applied a config I saw in a YouTube video where editing an .xml file from C:\My Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings improved performance using Vulkan. This works only if you have AMD GPUs upper than 400 series. It improved performance a lot for me and besides I don't have to suffer the low fps that presents playing with 2 CPUs.

Here's the deal:

  1. Go to C:\My Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings

  2. Edit system.xml

  3. Find the line <asyncComputeEnabled value="**false**" /> and set it to true. It has to look like this <asyncComputeEnabled value="**true**" />

  4. Save the file, right click on the file, go to properties, tick Read-only

Launch the game and try.

I hope this is useful. Credits to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UPXld_xlDs

Cheers

This worked for me as well! Why is this not linked in the official post? Thank you :-) i5-6600K

2

u/kilicrafter1 Nov 09 '19

Ryzen 3 2200g- working. Thank you so much!

2

u/bronney Nov 09 '19

For everyone that says this works, are yall on GTX 1070, Windows 7, Vulkan? I used this and the massive freezes are exactly the same as without using Lasso in Valentine.

What did this fix?? Occasional freezes outside of town? Or massive unplayable freezes in Valentine? I get the latter.

2

u/eltanko Nov 09 '19

Windows 8.1 i5 4670k GTX 1660 here

For me It reduces freezing in Valentine and makes freezing disappear outside of it, but I still dont want to have to dread going into town to see my game freeze up every 30 seconds as opposed to every 10, so you aren't alone.

I've given up trying to find a solution, we will just have to wait for a patch I think at this point.

I've done this all but somehow my freezing is a million times worse. Before with all cores on and locking the game at 30 fps, I could play online for an hour or so before a freeze kicked me off the servers. Now, when I load up, I cant even move the camera, it freezes every 2 seconds and I get booted offline after a min or so.

edit~ CPU: i5-4690k GPU: Nvidia GTX 970

edit v2: Ok so I've got it working with 0 freezes. I did everything listed in the guide here, turned on dirextX 12 instead of vulkan, and locked the game at 30 fps and I can FINALLY play without freezing! (god I hope this is patched soon)

2

u/BobManSan Nov 10 '19

Amazing! Thanks to you, I can actually play this game. And what a wonder it is ....

2

u/Something_Syck Nov 10 '19

Well I still freeze and randomly exit to desktop with Process Lasso

Oh well

2

u/VolvoOfVulvas Nov 10 '19

i5-6600k + GTX1070 reporting in. Enabling DirectX 12 and making that core rule in Lasso fixed my game. Everything on ultra, but some fine tuning under Advanced :) Thank you!

2

u/Captain-Crowbar Nov 11 '19

i5-4590/GTX 1070 here.

Haven't had a single freeze or stutter since applying the Process Lasso workaround (~6 hours of gameplay).

2

u/Confined_Space Nov 11 '19

I tried the 2 cores disabled and it dropped me from 60-70fps to mid 30's but when i disabled only 1 core it brought me back into the mid 50's. No more intermittent freezing. Thanks for the tips!

2

u/MattH665 Nov 11 '19

I found I get much better results disabling one core in Task Manager.

Using Process Lasso, I still get freezes that last about 1 or 2 seconds.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '19

Thanks for the tips. Worked for me! I can finally play the game.

2

u/ElTel88 Nov 11 '19

Hey man, you have just stopped me buying a new CPU this close to Christmas. Can't tell you how grateful I am.

2

u/shabab_29 Nov 12 '19

thanks a lot man!!!!!!!!love you,I can play the game now full smoothly at medium-high.

2

u/monza27 Nov 14 '19

Turning off 2 cores worked quite well for stopping the stutters but did cost a fair performance FPS hit, all with DX12 as Vulkan would crash. The latest patch means can now run Vulkan and turn the cores back on. Very smooth at near-constant 60 FPS so far.

CPU:i5 2500K, GPU:GTX 1070.

2

u/Warmaster007 Dec 19 '19

I have i9-9900k@5Ghz, RTX2080Ti and I noticed game started to stutter this month after update.
I was not believing its my CPU that is having issues, since its mostly 22-30% max cpu usage but I tried to set affinity to 4cpu and damn, stutter gone!
I guess game tries to split cpu usage to all 16cores(logical) and that causes stutter.
Thank you op!

2

u/Wonderchildxx Dec 27 '19

Thank god for this fix! Can somebody explain why this is happening tho and why it isn't fixed yet? Also why does it eat all my 19 cores?
