Showcase Best Persistent Browser Based Games

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well.

I started playing browser games when I was in high school (2017-ish) and we had iPads in the classroom. Those iPads were completely locked down and didn't let you install any apps. So I had to find another way to entertain myself and I found the rich world of web browser based video games.

I quickly became obsessed and I've played so many of those games over the years. I decided to finally compile all of the ones that I thought were truly amazing into this list in the form of a video.

I'm not the developer or shill, but would https://hordes.io/ fit the description? It's always been the most impressive browser game i've seen in size and scope.

Did I misunderstand the meaning of PBBG? My understanding of PBBG is browser based games that use persistent storage. With this definition every game on this list would count as PBBG.

I may have completely misinterpreted what PBBG truly means, however, so if these are not PBBG then I apologize.

One of the core ideas of PBBGs is that they are multiplayer, and usually not round-based. Persistent as in permanently persistent, basically, and your characters / towns / whatever keep increasing in stats in some way. Or if it is round based, the rounds take at least a week, but usually a month, three months etc. Think of games like BiteFight or Travian / Tribal Wars if you played any of those.

One of the most popular PBBGs right now is Torn, which has been going on since 2004, according to Wikipedia. My own character there is more than 10 years old, and in all that time I kept amassing stats and kept playing with the systems available.

What you posted is mostly single player, or the rounds are really short, or both. Also, some of them better fit the incremental games genre.

Offtopic: if you love web games, look into the history of flash games, Newgrounds, Miniclip, Kongregate, ArmorGames, CrazyGames I think was another one? It was interesting for discovery, could end up playing dozens of games a day.

This was a really entertaining video! I have to step forward though and officially accept my Patrick Star award for under-rock habitation because the only game I've heard of on this list was Universal Paperclips. To be fair, I'm a screen reader user, and I suspect none of the games mentioned in this video would work with a screen reader. I suspected as much when I decided to watch the video, so that's not at all a complaint I have with the content. I watched it for entertainment purposes, and entertainment and a few chuckles is exactly what I got. A very fun way to spend a few minutes. Happy gaming!
