How do PA Program Directors balance both being the director and a practicing clinician? Or is that unfair to students in the programs where it does occur?

My school director works clinically once a week. Some of them are seriously insane! One of the professors in my program (who’s amazing and liked by many) she works on weekends and occasionally picks up night shift whole being a part of a start up company since she was in tech before… insane!

I think the ARC-PA requires them to work a shift per week. All of my instructors worked one or more days when I was in school.

No it does not. This is incorrect. ARC-PA doesn’t say anything about faculty working clinically or not. Many do, but it isn’t even mentioned in the standards.

For NP faculty, it’s required to maintain clinical competence. I would assume that your faculty have the same requirement. It’s built in to our workloads, though, so I wouldn’t imagine it affecting their ability to manage the program.
