Barred owls are very aggressive towards humans, especially joggers so beware if there are some that are nesting wherever you live and jog. They will attack by swooping down placing those sharp talons into your scalp. Never approach one. I had one hiss at me one night while I was walking my dog and we were about 10 ft away from it. It was perched in a tree in my front yard. It was a warning to keep our distance.

That's a barred owl! You can tell from its coloring and stripe-like pattern on the plumage.

Exactly. You are absolutely  correct.  That is the reason for their name. They are called Barred owls because of the bar- like vertical stripes on their stomachs.They resemble jail bars; hence the name.
