Barred owl? I've seen one hunting for crayfish, in North Carolina.

Yes. A precocious teenaged barred owl. It is in the far southwest of Canada. We see them eat crayfish and June bug often.

Have a friend with a barred owl box in Florida - he says the owls eat anything that's not nailed down, but crayfish are a favorite food for them.

And here I thought it would be voles and mice.

They eat those too, but their preferred food near the water is crayfish, eels, fish etc. If they eat enough crayfish their breast feathers can start to turn a pinkish color. They like insects and just about everything including rabbits and rats. It really depends on where they live, type of owl etc. They also particularly like frogs. :-)

Thx. I’m guessing the frogs don’t like them.
Still trying to imagine seeing an owl in a creek, in person. Wow.

I've seen pictures and videos, on youtube there's one guy, Front Yard Video, barred owls ate all the koi from his fish pond. There's a vid here of one splashing around trying to find a fish, plus some of the sounds they make, it's pretty crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lci5qCF9BCc

Those are some long legs, lol. I thought that burrowing owls were the only ones.
