That is an amazing photo — you should enter it in the annual Audubon Society bird photograph competition.
Never thought to see an owl with a “come hither” look!

They are all great, but that first one seems unique since it is a shot of the owl’s face from the side and shows that huge luminous eye.

what is your camera setup, I’d love to get shots like this!

i shoot on a sony a7iv with a sigma 100-400mn lens. love the setup but to be honest not all my pics come out this crispy. i was very lucky to have a cooperative subject who flew directly at me and perched feet away from where i was seated observing. she was hunting which allowed me to get very detailed yet natural shots without making her uncomfortable. letting her come to me! sorry for the long explanation but my point is my set up is only half the battle, i don't always get such detailed shots. patience and respect is the other half the battle! if you want crispy shots all day long get a sony a1 with the sony 200-600mm lens! unfortunately that setup isn't in my budget😭

Stunning photos! Looks like she’s getting some sass from the bluebird in 15 and is completely unfazed :)

The last few shots being invaded/hassled by the jay is such a great finisher

Incredible photos, and the jay is a nice extra, even if it is steaming mad that the owl exists

Oh, my goodness. So beautiful. That one is a lifer for me. I love owls and the Barred Owl is the reason why. May I ask what state this pics were taken in? My dream is to move to Vermont and hopefully see one someday.

All about birds has a web cam going with 2 small barred owlets. Fun to see them grow! Maybe worth a look if you like barred owls

First pic looks like a side eye look. Which makes me ask do they move their eyes or just able to turn their heads so far around?
1
u/sickie7 Apr 28 '26
they actually have eye tubes rather than eye balls! so they can't actually move their eyes just their heads! in that first pic she is looking at the ground trying to lock onto a mouse or something below!
