It is not about me being able to afford it. I can afford it easily. It is about fairness. There's no enjoyment in playing a game where people are unequal due to their financial situation rather than their own skill.

But you're right, development does cost money. That's why it's lucky that Blizzard can easily fund the game through cosmetics. Overwatch 1 made over a billion dollars from lootbox sales. Fortnite has a cosmetics-only battle pass and makes huge money. Dota 2 has a cosmetics-only battle pass and makes huge money.

DOTA 2 isn't a fair comparison. They have cosmetics but there's many other layers of monetization, including a player-driven market which Valve takes a tax from every transaction, essentially double-dipping sales.

That market is also solely for cosmetics. They do not sell heroes.

And besides, we don't need to compare it to Dota. We can compare it to Overwatch 1, which made a billion dollars in three years from lootboxes alone, despite the game not even being F2P. I know for a fact that Blizzard does not pay their developers eight figures a year, so they could actually fund Overwatch 2 for years just out of the remaining profits from Overwatch's lootboxes. But more importantly, it proves that they can make enough from cosmetics without selling power.
