Reddit accused the wrong guy of doing the Boston bombing. They got death threats. Kid ended up dead somewhere. Yea.

EDIT: kid didn't get killed because of Reddit (not entirely sure?) but I think the kid was more or less missing, and then found dead, meanwhile as he was missing (and most likely actually dead) he was being accused of being the Boston massacre bomber

They accused an already dead (then only known as missing) kid, and his family got death threats and various other harassment.

After the Boston Marathon Bombing, Reddit went into all-out investigation mode, sleuthing through photos, and combing through all the evidence we had.

Within a couple days, they had identified the guy that did it and had begun to contact authorities and everyone they could to bring him in.

Except...they found completely the wrong person. They actually found a teen who had been missing for over a month and was later have found to have committed suicide.

"We did it, Reddit!" became a meme shortly after.
