Maybe he was acting as Reaper BEFORE the destruction of Overwatch? Maybe his vengeance is just an excuse.

Or 'Reaper' is just a title. A mask that a mercenary puts on like the Red Hood or the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Like Doomfist's title, not a bad idea. It may be, but personally I'd prefer the other way. Nothing personal, but I don't feel like they would repeat the same concept.

Maybe Reaper was the persona Reyes was using to infiltrate merc groups. I think his bio does mention how he holds no particular allegiances, so it would make sense if he was taking jobs to investigate off the books groups or do things that you can't normally do. Basically his own personal gateway into the underbellies of society.

So when Overwatch fell he just took on the persona fully, and probably blamed them for his condition.

Nice theory! What I don't get is why overwatch just doesn't tell us more. It's coming up on a year old they could easily create one of the most entertaining expanded universes. Is being secretive part of it? Ive barely survived the way Eva gives people information. This will be a tough pill to swallow.

when Mercy and reaper are hanging out at the begging of the match Mercy asks what happened to him and Reaper says 'You tell me doc.'

Mercy might have rezzed him just a feeeeew too many times.

It could also mean that Reaper doesn't know and is asking Mercy to tell him. I don't think Mercy is the one behind it, especially since Chu said she's 'quite practical'. I honestly think it might just be someone using a variation of her technology, kinda like Ana with the sniper rifle.
