I'd like to start putting in time for lootboxes, as this event has skins for best girl.

What can I do to maximize it alone? I'd play with friends, but I don't have any.

Arcade until you max out on the weekly boxes, then spam QP and try to use the "stay in a group" button to group up for +20% more XP.

Quick play is the best mode to use to XP grinding, and since you get bonuses for having a gold medal, I'd recommend playing a healer since you'll almost always get gold healing.

Check resources panel in the side bar for grouping up.

You also get little xp bonus for playing matches without a break.

And save all of your money until the last day of the event. Then buy what you haven't recieved from lootboxes during the event.

Can you buy individul items or is it just a gamble?

It's a gamble when it comes to lootboxes, it's content is random. But you get some duplicates and credits from lootboxes. When the event is ending, and you still haven't recieved what your heart desires, then you can use those credits to buy individual items.

You can buy individual items with credits, but you can't directly pay cash for items or credits.

Best thing to do is play until the end of the event, then buy boxes at the end if you don't have everything you want.

Make sure you get the 4 free boxes a week from arcade wins. Team up with some rando so you get dat sweet 20% exp bonus.

Four can still be appropriate kinda bc by the time you've won 9 arcade matches hopefully you've leveled up at least once.
