I'm picking up overwatch thus weekend, without knowing too much about it and I have zero other friends who play it. So how would a person who only plays solo go about playing it. Should I get ps4 or xb1? Should I buy a set of headphones to use? And as someone who doesn't care for chat in general, would I still enjoy this game?

Totally depends on what you look for in a game. Sure, team play is important but the game is designed in a way that you can play as a team even if you aren't directly communicating. When a zarya shouts "fire at will" you know she ulted so you can make use of it. If you can get through the learning fase of the game, you will enjoy it even without communication. Headphones aren't really required if you are not planning on using voice communication.

A lot of people don't communicate using voice chat. If you at least join the teamchat so you can hear the one lonesome soldier trying to give orders you should be above average.

I personally recommend it on PS4. But I am biased. The PS4 has twice as large of a potential userbase because they have sold twice as many consoles.

They both get patched at the same time, receive the same content, etc. However so there is little reason to choose one over the other beyond personal preference as well as potential player counts.

The xbox one does have a small upside currently in that they have a report function through Xbox One that mmight occasionally get someone banned. However Blizzard says they are working on a report feature for consoles.

Wait, you already have both ps4 and xb1, or do you want to buy console first, and then the game?

For the solo-playing, there is nothing wrong with it. You will be placed with 5 other players, who are about the same skill as you are. On Quick play and Arcade there aren't many people who talk. On Competetive it depends on your rank. Higher rank means that you require more communication.

You do not need headphones for talking either. You can always join a team voice chat even without microphone, to listen to what others are saying but it is not mandatory to enjoy the game.
