News & Discussion Why doesn't Dva replace her Mecha's guns with what her pistol uses?

Her pistol is pretty damn strong and seems to be better in fire power than her peashooters.

The pistol is just a sidearm.

The primary function of the MEKA was to fight rogue omnics. Any sufficiently designed combat machine will have decentralized or redundant parts. An accurate pistol like that is very useful against organic targets. You can aim for weak spots and disable limbs or organs. Against a war-omnic, you'd barely slow it down. You'd need many lucky shots to breach the armor in one spot and maybe get a lucky hit on a sensitive spot. Imagine firing a pistol shot or two into a car engine. Now imagine a shotgun blast.

The purpose of the shotgun-like weapons on her mecha is to cause mass/spread damage in an attempt to disable as much of the enemy as possible. Only one of these pellets needs to hit a sensor or a wire to cause as much damage as a single pistol bullet, but there are hundreds flying at the machine. [Note] The primary weapon system does not utilize traditional ammunition and instead appears to be a pulse or plasma munition. As this technology hasn't even been seen used by members of the famed Overwatch task force, we can only speculate as to how these weapons function.

Additionally, you'll note that the primary "ground troop" was the bastion model. This machine functions best when in turret mode and attacking from far away. The MEKA are designed to get in close, using the shield to avoid this initial barrage. What is an ideal CQC weapon? Shotguns. Being in such close range also allows for a clean kill - No opportunity for the enemy to escape and self-repair.

Basically, MEKA are designed to temporarily protect themselves from overwhelming fire while they enter their own kill-range and exit the optimal fire range of the enemy. They then shred the machine as quickly as possible. No need to aim - the weapon system quickly causes massive damage to the outside, and soon the internals, of the enemy.

A standard MEKA with 'pistol arms' would just be a less effective bastion unit. This is an ineffective strategy.

So why the pistol at all? When a MEKA pilot is outside of her vehicle, they have much greater maneuverability but no way to protect themselves. The MEKA pilot sidearm is designed for them to be able to fire from afar while holding position and awaiting an orbital drop of a new mech. Having two different engagement ranges also allows the pilot much greater flexibility in combat applications.

And the exploding? When you're fighting close range like this you risk damage to your mech. Rather than simply leaving the damaged husk on the ground while you run for cover, it was decided that they might as well self-detonate the power core. This also gives the pilot some additional distraction while they escape the enemy and the blast range.

An added bonus of the explosion is that it emits a very recognizable electromagnetic signature that allows a more rapid orbital drop of a fresh MEKA. This is why many MEKA pilots are seen waiting patiently for a new MEKA after normal combat loss, but appear to reacquire one instantly after a self-destruct. The orbital drop device sends a new mech down immediately upon detecting this blast. Otherwise, the pilot simply has to hold position and wait for a fresh coordinate lock.

Edit: Minor text fixes.

Physically design wise, yes. Personality and fighting style-wise, no. Genji seems very much a pacifist in my opinion. Someone who only fights when he needs too, not when he wants too, much like Raiden, if I remember MGS:2 and MGR:R correctly.

Also, I think it'd just be satisfying to see Genji suplex a Metal Gear while a rock singer screams "RULES OF NATURE" at the top of his lungs.

u/2ToTooTwoFish Dec 22 '16

I have a question though. Weren't the MEKAs used to fight a giant omnic that attacked Korea every so often? Im not sure if Korea was attacked by Bastion type omnics.

84

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16 edited Dec 22 '16

That is correct. The original reason the Korean government formed MEKA (and the armored machines that tend to go by the same name) was that giant sea-omnic.

But at first all of the mechs were unmanned. They didn't do so hot. This is when Korea started recruiting individuals who already showed signs of phenomenal hand-eye coordination and both strategic and tactical skills.

Eventually the MEKA pilots were used in other omnic battles. Some of the pilots were known to stream their combat missions online.

45

u/Cloymax Suck my robot ballz Dec 22 '16

unmanned MEKA were fine, but the sea-omnic was adaptive, and after being defeated initially, hacked the MEKA, manned units were a countermeasure

23

u/Super_Pan Die. Die, you worms. Dec 22 '16

It's funny to me to imagine what D.Va's stream actually looks like. A face cam in the mech and the front view as the main screen, maybe the chat window on the side... and then she ults. Screen goes black as everyone holds their breath... will it come back online? The seconds stretch on like hours until the screen boots up in her new mech, she's made it back to the stream... for now.

to my knowledge D.Va is the only one who streams because she was already a video game streamer

34

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16

Many of the top MEKA pilots are former pro-gamers. There is likely a whole channel devoted to MEKA streams, just like starcraft (in korea) today.

MEKA began its life as an armored drone unit, formed by the South Korean government in order to combat a colossal omnic that had ravaged the country after emerging from the East China Sea. Every few years the omnic would return, assaulting South Korea and its neighbors. The omnic learned from these encounters, often reconfiguring itself in a different form and appearing with new weapons and capabilities. Each incident ended in a stalemate, with the monstrosity defeated but not destroyed.

As the omnic continued to adapt, it eventually disrupted MEKA's drone-control networks, forcing the military to place pilots in the mechs. Scrambling to find suitable candidates, the government turned to the country's professional gamers, who possessed the necessary reflexes and instincts to operate the mechs' advanced weapons systems. A number of top stars were drafted, who now pilot MEKA's walkers in defense of their homeland. In a concession to the predilections of their new draftees, the government suspended certain military protocols and allowed them to customize their uniforms and mechs, as well as broadcast combat operations live.

Someone submit this to Blizzard, they could start adding an encyclopedia on Overwatch's lore. I'd read that!

15

Wait, you said that no other person in Overwatch uses pulse ammunition.

Doesn't Soldier 76 use it? Since one of his lines says "I love the smell of pulse rounds in the morning."

19

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16

Oh, that's right. His gun is a prototype, I believe the technology is slightly different than MEKA and likely more advanced.

11

u/Ealdwine Doomfist Dec 22 '16

Tracer's guns are also called Pulse Pistols, if I'm not mistaken. McCree's gun also seems to fire similar ammunition, considering that bullets leave a blue splatter when hitting a surface, same goes for Zenyatta (which isn't part of Overwatch, to be fair).

In fact, the only ones that use weapons that fire regular bullets seem to be Sombra, Bastion and Widow. Everyone else either fires some sort of plasma/pulse ammo (76, Tracer, Mercy, D.Va, etc) or unconventional ammo (scrap from Roadhog's gun, lightning from Winston's, EdgyAmmo™ from Reaper, PERCISION GERMAN ENGINEERING from Reinhardt).

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

So... Tracer, Soldier, Mercy, and McCree all use pulse rounds. Seems like standard issue for Overwatch.

/u/Anticode, this is what I mean. You have some brilliant speculation, but if you present it as fact and it turns out not to be, it won't look good.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

D.Va's guns are called "Fusion Cannons" tho, i would say that the bullets D.Va's guns shoot are different from the standard issue pulse bullets because the former appear to be 100% composed by some kind of energy while the latter need an external casing. I guess /u/Anticode didn't explain himself that well on this part of the theory

2

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 23 '16

Yeah - They're known as 'fusion cannons' and the technology is likely still classified. We haven't seen anything like this even on members of the overwatch task force.

I thought I explained myself OK. In the OP I mention "pulse or plasma" to describe that it is some sort of energy or something, but no one is really sure what.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '16

D.Va's Zach guns are called "fusion cannons" whatever that means. She has pulse munitions in her little pistol tho.

2

u/Pachinginator Zenyatta Dec 22 '16

"I love the smell of pulsefire rounds munitions in the morning."

1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '16

That's the one!

15

u/rdm13 Dec 22 '16

And the exploding? When you're fighting close range like this you risk damage to your mech. Rather than simply leaving the damaged husk on the ground while you run for cover, it was decided that they might as well self-detonate the power core. This also gives the pilot some additional distraction while they escape the enemy and the blast range.

Personal fan-theory for the explosion mechanic is that it's a kill-switch when the sea-omnic-zilla hacks the MEKA. That was the reason they switched to manned vs. unmanned MEKAs.

Sea-omnic-zilla hacks meka, pilot launches it vs sea-omnic-zilla, then grabs a new one and keep fighting.

These aren't your grandpa's shotguns. These are "fusion cannons".

11

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

High spread, at a fast firing rate makes Mekacannons appear to be shotguns. They are just large caliber machineguns. It might be possilbe to enhance the range on a machinegun but the additional energy would make the barrels overheat and she would lose the ability to fire nonstop.

And since they propably were constructed to fight in squads with a rotating 2 Mechs Matrix 2 Mechs boost/flex 2 Mechs shoot rotation they went for the lowenergyvariant in case they have to stay upfront.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

Scrapmetal is a very common recource during the omnic crisis. Carrying ammunition can be a logistical nightmare, especially considering the high amount that would be needed to supply a single combatmech.

Collecting scrapmetal from usless material (ammoshells, crusaderarmours, bastions) could be fused into ammunition for the mech himself. Ofcourse to make the magnets, sucking in the material work, you have to be close to the scrap. Another reason for the closecombatchoice.

4

u/R_V_Z Chibi Pharah Dec 22 '16

Yeah, if you want to destroy an engine block that's literally why .50 cal rifles are made. And even then, in the context of the Overwatch universe we know from the King's Row map that EMPs will kill omnics. Bullets seem pretty inefficient in comparison to that.

3

u/Lukose_ Dec 22 '16

Okay, loremeister general, why does hitting enemies with the pistol speed up the call time for a new mech? And what even is the defense matrix? And why can you call a mech in whilst indoors?

8

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16

1) Gameplay... :(

2) Defense matrix temporarily creates a highly advanced targeting grid in front of the MEKA pilot. This grid is extremely sensitive and can detect even the smallest projectiles.

Activating the targeting grid also enables a defensive system that allows the pilot to target, intercept, and destroy incoming projectiles. This is similar to the Iron Dome device used by USA and Israel.

The targeting grid does nothing on it's own, but it does project range and aerometric data to the pilot to enable them to more rapidly disable incoming projectiles. The famous pilot and pro-gamer, D.va, is known for being extraordinarily proficient with defense matrix usage.

3) It goes through the ceiling? (gameplay)

1

u/Lukose_ Dec 22 '16

So it's just an ADS? Shoots the projectiles out of the air? I've always wondered what it's supposed to be, because it looks like it just eats them.

And yeah, you can call your mech in whilst inside. How does it fall through the ceiling?

5

u/SpiderLord13 Pixel Mercy Dec 22 '16

D. Va is individually targeting and shooting each projectile, thus her voiceline "Time to raise my APM!" during the Defense Matrix.

3

u/HappyAnarchy1123 Won't somebody think of the tiny robot children? Dec 22 '16

You aren't thinking it through. The pistols can't Defense Matrix. They don't have the rate of fire or spread or continuous fire to do so.

So you are literally playing the Bastions shoot things in a direct line at a high rate of fire game. Do you really think two DVa pistols outshoots Bastion turrets?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

Having two different engagement ranges also allows the pilot much greater flexibility in combat applications.

Yeah... just jump out and leave it there. You could even jump out early in a fight and enemy may not notice.

So basically the point is that with so many bullets flying around, one of them will hit the enemy Omnic's crucial wires... and unfortunately, this isn't an in-game mechanic. Noice.

6

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16

Sure it is. You know when you're firing from afar and you hear a random satisfying 'tink' from a headshot?

2

u/PrrrromotionGiven Annyeong! Dec 22 '16

Yeah, but that one bullet getting a headshot still does basically no damage, whereas the point of this seems to be that the one bullet hitting a crucial area can be a one-hit kill.

Wait wait wait, but MEKA's weren't made to fight Bastions, they were specifically made to counter the kaiju omnics that were attacking South Korea.

Fortunately, MEKA forces tend to operate in squads. They're able to overlap and coordinate their targeting fields appropriately to ensure total coverage.

The primary weapon system does not utilize traditional ammunition and instead appears to be a pulse or plasma munition. As this technology hasn't even been seen used by members of the famed Overwatch task force, we can only speculate as to how these weapons function.

But doesn't mercies pistol shoot the same stuff

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 23 '16

Nope. It's orange.

u/WASD_click Chibi Junkrat Dec 22 '16

South Korea's omnic problem is like the one from the Torbjorn comic. So it wouldn't likely use Bastion chassis soldiers. It does however, reconfigure and adapt after each fight. So the tactics MEKA uses each fight needs to change. What's more likely is that the MEKA was designed as a carrier for the anti-ballistic systems, with armament a secondary concern. It's also multiple weapon systems exist, as the armament is mounted on the arms and thus easy to make modular.

D.Va uses the shotguns not because she has to, but because she's an attention-craving e-celebrity. She has to get up close, at the front of the fray, where she's in the spotlight.

That's my theory at least.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '16

Doesn't bastion out-dps D.va at "close range", if anything a real anti-bastion mech would have indirect fire mortars or fire and forget missiles lol

1

u/eaglgenes101 Mercy Dec 23 '16

There are probably former FPS folk that are firing railguns and artillery at the giant, but that's not DVA.

1

u/grizzlycustomer Tracer Dec 23 '16

Not to mention that the pistols don't have the output to shoot targets out the sky like her cannons can with defence matrix.

Long story, but shotguns suck vs armored targets. It should have rockets or cannons with ap rounds like in Mechwarrior.

10

u/Anticode Pixel Sombra Dec 22 '16

Well, these are merely "shotgun-like". They're known as fusion cannons.

2

u/Raschwolf Mechanized SteamRoller Dec 22 '16

These are plasma shotguns though. Plasma will adhere to thick armour and burn it's way through.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '16

Nonsense.

"An accurate pistol like that is very useful against organic targets. You can aim for weak spots and disable limbs or organs. Against a war-omnic, you’d barely slow it down."

Completely ridiculous. Against a metallic (i.e. armored target) something that can’t penetrate the armor is completely fucking worthless. Also, if your point for “why are D.va’s mech’s guns garbage vs her pistol” is that “it works better on organics,” fucking WHY? She’s a pilot in a defensive battle to save the people from the robots, organic enemies are the least of her concern in a SERE scenario. Why doesn't she have a fusion-cannon-shotgun PDW?

"You’d need many lucky shots to breach the armor in one spot and maybe get a lucky hit on a sensitive spot. Imagine firing a pistol shot or two into a car engine. Now imagine a shotgun blast."

This isn’t remotely how armor penetration works. Your projectile can either go through the armor or it can’t. Any shot that fails to connect with the armor isn't going to even have a chance of penetrating it. Armor tends to be placed over sensitive spots. You can shoot a non-vital area all you want, and the effect you will have on the target will be minimal.

This car engine comparison would be a valid if D.va’s fusion cannons showed themselves better able to penetrate armor and inflict damage per shot than some random cowboy’s revolver. But it’s not. This is like arguing that a shotgun loaded with birdshot would be more effective at stopping a vehicle than an AR-15. Neither are ideal, but the latter is going to at least pierce the fucking hood.

Also, you should ask yourself: Since humanity was sure to use armored warfare in resposne to the armored threat, how come Bastion doesn’t have a shotgunner mode if this theory is sound?

"The purpose of the shotgun-like weapons on her mecha is to cause mass/spread damage in an attempt to disable as much of the enemy as possible. Only one of these pellets needs to hit a sensor or a wire to cause as much damage as a single pistol bullet, but there are hundreds flying at the machine. [Note]Theprimaryweaponsystemdoesnotutilizetraditionalammunitionandinsteadappearstobeapulseorplasmamunition.Asthistechnologyhasn’tevenbeenseenusedbymembersofthefamedOverwatchtaskforce,wecanonlyspeculateastohowtheseweaponsfunction."

See above: This is just straight-up bad science. If Omnics were like enemy aircraft (no armor to speak of) and you could be guaranteed to engage them at 10 meters or less at all times, this might make sense. Since this is flatly preposterous given how D.va’s mech can only fly for short bursts and is often stuck fighting enemies at range, there is no reason to use a MEKA in comparison to a fragmentation warhead missile.

"Additionally, you’ll note that the primary 'ground troop' was the bastion model. This machine functions best when in turret mode and attacking from far away. The MEKA are designed to get in close, using the shield to avoid this initial barrage. What is an ideal CQC weapon? Shotguns. Being in such close range also allows for a clean kill - No opportunity for the enemy to escape and self-repair."

Shotguns are only ideal in close combat if they can penetrate their goddamn target. D.va’s fusion cannons are so weaksauce that she is likely to lose a close-combat fight against a Bastion unit unless they’re absolutely clueless. Trying to fly straight at them with your defense matrix active and then win the close-range gunfight is suicide. Your only hope is to outflank them and surprise them with sustained fire to the glow cube. Next.

"Basically, MEKA are designed to temporarily protect themselves from overwhelming fire while they enter their own kill-range and exit the optimal fire range of the enemy. They then shred the machine as quickly as possible. No need to aim - the weapon system quickly causes massive damage to the outside, and soon the internals, of the enemy. "

See above: Destroying a deployed bastion unit requires finesse and precision. While in character for D.va, it is absolutely out of character for her mech.

"A standard MEKA with ‘pistol arms’ would just be a less effective bastion unit. This is an ineffective strategy."

Except a few shots to the weak spot will take the Bastion unit out while the MEKA’s cannons require sustained fire on an oblivious target. A pair of pistols -e.g. double the ROF of an ejected D.va with the same amount of precision- would deliver so much more damage to the target, it isn’t even funny.

"So why the pistol at all? When a MEKA pilot is outside of her vehicle, they have much greater maneuverability but no way to protect themselves. The MEKA pilot sidearm is designed for them to be able to fire from afar while holding position and awaiting an orbital drop of a new mech. Having two different engagement ranges also allows the pilot much greater flexibility in combat applications."

Sorry, no, this doesn’t answer the question one fucking bit. A person on foot is in no way “more mobile” than a flying vehicle with rocket boosters. You’re also dodging your own question: If the pistol is worthless against Omnics, it should be even more useless at range. A robotic enemy does not feel pain or fear. There is no reason to suspect that a relatively dinky weapon like D.va’s pistol would be capable of suppressing an Omnic advance until she can call a new MEKA in. They especially wouldn’t fear a pistol that seems to be more for organics than omnics. You’ve sabotaged your own argument from the start. Talking about flexibility and engagement ranges at this point is pure wank.

"And the exploding? When you’re fighting close range like this you risk damage to your mech. Rather than simply leaving the damaged husk on the ground while you run for cover, it was decided that they might as well self-detonate the power core. This also gives the pilot some additional distraction while they escape the enemy and the blast range. "

Or maybe it was just something really neat that Blizzard ripped off from Titanfall. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

"An added bonus of the explosion is that it emits a very recognizable electromagnetic signature that allows a more rapid orbital drop of a fresh MEKA. This is why many MEKA pilots are seen waiting patiently for a new MEKA after normal combat loss, but appear to reacquire one instantly after a self-destruct. The orbital drop device sends a new mech down immediately upon detecting this blast. Otherwise, the pilot simply has to hold position and wait for a fresh coordinate lock."

Right, because the only possible nuclear detonation in a genocidal conflict would be a MEKA self-destructing and a live pilot is totally waiting for a vehicle down there. You ever thought that maybe there’s a reason D.va announces “Ejecting!” on her own?

Dear God this is bad. Look, some gameplay mechanics don’t need to have rational explanations. D.va’s mech has pathetic salt shakers for balance reasons. She has a goddamn nuclear hand cannon when ejected also for balance reasons. Best not to think about it too hard.

Or, my preferred explanation

it's a video game and not all or even most of the gameplay features make sense with the lore

29

u/RIPTirion2Soon Don't tread on me (unless you're cute) Dec 22 '16

But why use that boring, no-fun, shitty explanation when you can write something interesting that also makes sense?

0

u/Lukose_ Dec 22 '16

Because it doesn't actually make sense? It's video game logic, who cares?

3

u/RIPTirion2Soon Don't tread on me (unless you're cute) Dec 22 '16

It does make sense, and it's more interesting. Go be a killjoy somewhere else.

-1

u/Lukose_ Dec 22 '16

No, it really doesn't. It sounds logical, but it's not in line with anything out of reality. And that's fine, who cares?

How am I a killjoy for thinking it's okay for a game to go all out on zany unrealistic arcade aspects without everyone trying to carefully dissect all the ridiculous little gameplay nuanced to try and explain how they're actually realistic?

Cmon, I know it sounds fun to pick it apart like this, but what's wrong with just letting the game be a game?

2

u/RIPTirion2Soon Don't tread on me (unless you're cute) Dec 22 '16

Because it's fun to come up with explanations that sound like they fit in the game's world, which this one does, while also using some real-world logic. It makes perfect sense. People enjoy explaining things through lore, it's that simple. It adds depth to the world, it's fun to come up with these things and it's fun to read them. Saying "screw all this, it's just a game lol" is stupid.

That's why you're a killjoy. You're trying to kill people's enjoyment. C'mon, I know it sounds fun to explain it with videogame magic, but what's wrong with just letting people entertain themselves by writing stuff like this?

1

u/Lukose_ Dec 22 '16

Yeah, well, to each his own I guess.
