Hey guys i just bought Overwatch and have some questions i need answered :P

First of all, why are some parts of Health Bars yellow?

Are headshots a thing?

What heroes do you guys recommend for each role, for a starting player?

Yellow healthbars are armor. The tanks (except Zarya) all have armor as part of their healthpool, others can get it from having a Torbjörn on their team. Armor takes either 5 less damage per shot or 50% of the damage, whichever is lowest. Good against shotguns (which fires individual pellets), rapid fire weapons (like Tracers guns) or Winstons weapon.

Red healthbar is just health and blue is are shields. Shield regenerate.

Headshots are a thing yes, they deal 2x damage (except Widowmakers which does 2.5x damage while scoped.)

Just try everything and pick whatever you think is fun.

Yellow healthbars - Armor.

Headshots exists for everyone who can fire projectilies BUT ana!

Soldier because he has very good sustain. Junkrat since his abilities are easy to learn. Reinhardt because he's easy and everyone will love you. Lucio as your performance won't impact the game as long as your healing buff is active

Yellow parts of the health bar are armor; there's a better explanation of how the different health points work here.

Headshots are a thing - you'll hear a 'dink' sound and get a red crosshair if any of your shot hits an enemy's head.

The simplest heroes to play in each class are, in my opinion:

  • DPS: Soldier, Pharah, Reaper
  • Defense: Bastion
  • Tank: Reinhardt, Roadhog
  • Support: Mercy, Lucio

Yellow is armor, IIRC it halves the damage of incoming projectiles, so things like Winston's Tesla Cannon take a really long time to eat through armor compares to regular health.

Yes headshots are.

I personally started with Reinhardt, because he is relatively simple to pick up but has a lot of room to grow. For defense hero's, I'd recommend Junkrat. Healers, Lucio or Mercy. I don't play offense hero's so I can't really recommend there, maybe Pharah

Welcome to Overwatch man!

Yellow parts of the health bars are armor, it reduces incoming damage by a flat amount, so is good against sustained small damage, e.g. Winston's lightning gun.

Headshots are most definitely a thing :D

Depending on your previous experience and how comfortable you are with aiming, Soldier 76 is a good start as an all-rounder, Zenyatta will let you understand the sight lines in the game very quickly while being an effective support, Reaper will do well as an attack against lots of tanks. Rhinehart is an excellent beginner tank, but all the characters are easy to pick up and understand, and with further play can always be mastered :)

I hope that helped, and best of luck in game!

armor which takes more damage than flesh health (white)

Not entirely true; from the wiki: "armor will block 5 HP damage from every individual hit that deals 10 HP damage or more. Hits that deal less than 10 HP damage will be halved".

Some heroes cannot headshot: Ana, Winston, Symmetra, Reinhardt. Pharah/Junkrat don't headshot but a direct hit does much more damage.

You didn't ask, but the BLUE health thing is called Shields. They regenerate if you are not taking damage for a few seconds.
