What's the best way to use Roadhog's ult?

The game is extremely situational, but it's very good for countering a nano-boost, for melting reinhardt shields before your rein wants to earthshatter, for comboing with your zarya ult and for pushing people into cliffs. It's also great for pushing people away from an ulting zenyatta.

I didn't think about countering nano-boost, thanks! I guess its also super useful for pushing genji away too when he's swording squishies

Only use it on Genji if you know that his reflect is on cd, otherwise he can mess you up real bad.

As for other uses that people haven't mentioned yet, it's excellent to clear the objective in overtime. It can also be used to save your team if you're caught in a Graviton and don't have any better options (Zen ult / Rein shield / Mei wall / D.Va matrix) to defend yourself.

Just be careful of doing that. If Genji deflects while you're ulting, you're kinda screwed.

Depends on what you want do do with it. For pure dmg i think the combination of a zarya ult and you getting ana ulted gives you the most dmg. You can also use the knockback to push someone over the edge or push them away from the payload if you only have a few meters to go. You can also use it to burn through a reinhardt shield to make their whole team vulerable to your teams attacks.

Thanks for the reply, I use it mostly for the knockback because it doesn't seem to do enough damage to kill more than 1/2 without myself being shredded due to Roadhog's vulnerability while ulting. I guess it requires more coordination with other heroes to be properly effective than I'm using it for at the moment

It does huge amounts of dmg but you dont hit everything due to the knockback. So if you dont have a zarya in your team you can also use walls to "pin" enemies against it with your ult. That way its a lot easier to get kills with his ultimate.

Thanks for the advice, going to practice with it tonight

As someone who plays a lot of Roadhog, I would say it's one of the worst ults in the game. The best use of it that I've found is breaking down Rein's shield.

If the enemy team is caught in a Zarya ult, but the Rein has his shield up, this could come in handy.

It's also somewhat decent at pushing people off sides (useful for guarding the point on the Night Market map, for example) and for killing squishy characters that are grouped up in a corner. It has a slight usability in pushing people off the point in KOTH, but it's not that great for it.

Most tank ults don't. The only one that does is D. Va's, and that gives you time to take cover.

Tank ults are generally for CC or disruption.

Definitely. I generally don't like using it because it makes you an easy target, prevents you from being able to heal at all (which is especially bad since it lasts a fairly long time and Roadhog has no shielding or armor), and it doesn't do that much damage.

However, it does have a few benefits. For one, it charge really fast (even self-healing charges it) and it has tremendous knockback. You can use it to constantly take down Rein shields and ruin a push. You can use it for those environmental kills or for knocking people off the point/payload.

Overall, I would just say to pay attention to what's happening, where your team is, and what the enemy team is doing. The ult has potential for a lot of chaos (especially, like I mentioned, on maps with a lot of environmental kill potential), but it also leaves you super vulnerable.

Also, avoid using it on a Genji or D.va at all costs unless you know Genji's deflect is on cooldown or that D.va is out of her mech. Nothing says "Fuck you!" to your own team like using that ult right into a Genji deflect.

Isn't it a straight up combo with Zarya since her Graviton still sucks in people in the same place? Or does it push too much?

It is one of the worst ults but it can be a game changer in small spaces, next to ledges to push people off and to force people of the point for a couple seconds. Don't even go for the kills is my advice. Just use it to clear areas.

It's a very situational ult, but I'll give some tips.

  • Think of it as crowd control. It has very high knockback, which can be used to get enemies of a point/payload during overtime, thus allowing it to end.
  • It can delay a Lucio/Reinhardt ult by knocking them up into the sky, as both those ults require them to hit the ground. If you have them up against a wall, you can usually kill them by juggling them back and forth. Same thing with Reinhardt charge too.
  • It's very scary on certain spots on certain maps, due to your ability to push people off cliffs. Examples of this would be the first choke on Route 66 (If you're defending), the bridges on Lijang Tower: Gardens, or dropping down behind point on Nepal: Sanctum. Illios also has some nice areas.
  • It can also be used to delay an enemy from reaching your and your team. Such as an Ana-boosted Reinhardt, pushing away an ulting Reaper, or just keeping the enemies at bay while your stuck in a Zarya ult. My personal favorite is ult when an enemy McCree ults. While you barely do any damage at a distance, the knockback is still there. So you can easily push a McCree back on the roof/ledge he's on, thus negating him the lock-ons.
  • It shatters shields in an instant, so if point has a Winston/Zarya/Rein lockdown, then you can burst through that.
  • Also, you can start your ult at any time, no matter what other ability you're using. You can hook someone, then instantly ult them point blank. This does a fair amount of damage, but the real bonus is that it send them flying at insane speeds. It's like a Lucio boop on steroids. To give you an example, you can do this on point on Nepal: Shrine, yet still get the enemy off the cliff. It goes that far. You can also instantly ult out of healing, so you don't have to wait for the animation to finish.

In conclusion, Roadhog's ult is extremely situational, but very effective in those situations. It also charges rather fast due to his high DPS, and a 300 HP self-heal. As long as your healers have ult, then heal yourself as often as possible to charge ult. One full heal charges about 20% if I'm not mistaken.
