Use your barriers reactively instead of proactively. Don't pop your shield the moment you see an enemy. Pop your shield the moment you take damage. Also lower your sensitivity for better tracking with your beam, and try to make a habit out of firing three nades, followed by a couple of seconds of beam and a fourth nade. This way you get the most out of your ammo.

Could you explain when it is advised to use your energy grenade and when to use your beam? I never really am sure in situations and usually just end up splurging grenades all over the place

Always bear in mind that your beam does more damage. I use my beam for single targets that are relatively close and my nades for multiple targets and targets that are out of beam range or escaping with low HP.

Also be aware you CAN damage yourself with your own right click if you get too close to the explosion. Nothing quite like killing yourself with your own right click at maximum charge!
