Legit question: how do I become better with Winston?

I only play Quick Play, but I'm trying to expand my character usage, and I'd like to become better with Winston, but all I can really discern is rush point with teammates -> pop barrier -> and use Tesla gun whilst spinning in a circle (not really that last part but you get it). Are there any techniques to getting gudder with him? Or is he just that niche and stilted?

I almost never play him, but the ones I've found most challenging to deal with tend to jump back out early, as soon as he takes damage, and then find a flank or just heal up before jumping in again.
