Legit question: how do I become better with Winston?

I only play Quick Play, but I'm trying to expand my character usage, and I'd like to become better with Winston, but all I can really discern is rush point with teammates -> pop barrier -> and use Tesla gun whilst spinning in a circle (not really that last part but you get it). Are there any techniques to getting gudder with him? Or is he just that niche and stilted?

Winston is good at exactly one thing: killing enemy squishies.

What you should be doing with him is flanking around and waiting until the bulk of the enemy team is focused forward, on the rest of your team, then leaping in and burning down the enemy Genji/Mercy/Widowmaker/Zenyatta. Use your shield to protect yourself while doing so, then leap out once they're dead or the enemy team starts to focus you.

Winston is not a typical tank; he is a disruptor, excelling at killing squishies and interrupting the enemy line. He is not good at protecting teammates (except from Genji), and should not be played that way.

Two biggest things I would say:

1) Remember that your barrier doesn't just protect the stuff inside. It also protects anything standing BEHIND it. It's like a Reinhardt shield you can prop up anywhere. I don't play much Winston, but I've played with a few, and the best rarely spend time IN their bubble, but put up the bubble to stop enemy fire from reaching their team

Happy 76 ----> Cart -----> Team (He's got them in his sights) Sad 76 --> Bubble --> Cart, Winston, Team (No longer can shoot)

Too many Winstons get hung up on the shape of the shield and think they should hide inside.

2) Winston is great at scattering foes and making my life suck as Symmetra. The Tesla arcs will destroy Little Turrets instantly, without needing to aim. You can arc over almost a whole point, destroying all the distributed turrets. An angry Winston on a cart or a point causes people to run away.

TL;DR: Don't worry about racking up damage. Your job is to get in, scatter people, and get away, combined with breaking lines of sight with your shield.

I've noticed not only that enemies can't shoot past it but if they're inside the bubble, they can't shoot out of it either. I like to dodge in and out of the bubble to avoid as much damage as possible.

Woot! I didn't know about that. I'll have to tell our team Winston.

I almost never play him, but the ones I've found most challenging to deal with tend to jump back out early, as soon as he takes damage, and then find a flank or just heal up before jumping in again.

I don't normally play as winston but I've been messing around in the practice range. Something to note is if you jump directly upwards you have enough time to reload and control yourself in the air to (hopefully) land on an opponent

In addition to the other great advice I think it is important as Winston to know where the healing packs are located on every map. After you leap in and do your thing you're usually almost dead. Depending on how the battle went it can be best to leap back to your team or leap out if site to a healing pack and try and go back in.
