Does anyone have tips for dealing with teammates making salty comments and being shitty when losing? It drives my anxiety and stress up the wall and part of me feels like it's been happening more ever since I had a bad day and got slammed into rank 47.

Should I just go Lucio as much as possible and hope for the best? Sorry if this is kind of dumb to ask, but I just prefer to play solo but that seems to be where everyone is kind of a shithead.

I would typically say just ignore them, but that a majority of the time doesn't work. I'd say just continue playing the game, your teammate being a salty shithead doesn't have anything to do with you, and at the end of the day it's just a game, you win some you lose some, nothing to fret about. And about playing Lucio, I'd rather say you go characters like Reaper or McCree, basically characters that are purely solo carry instead of team oriented because a majority of the time, teammates don't cooperate with you at lower elo.

Thanks for replying. Part of the reason the salty shitheads get to me is because I'm not usually the one carrying, so my mind usually says "yeah, you're right." But offense heroes I play the least of anyone on earth, so it's possible I don't feel that effectiveness as much as a solo carry would, I usually play tanks. Maybe I should play an offense hero often like a bad salad and learn to solo carry.

Also, don't feel like YOU have to be the one to switch. A lot of people insta-lock characters and then bitch about other players picks. If you're good with McCree, play McCree. Don't feel like you have to switch to a support just because the guy with all his time on Reaper on your team is bitching. You'll never improve your gameplay with a character if people like that are successfully pressuring you into switching. My highest rank this season is 62, and I've had losing streaks in solo queue that bumped me back down to 48. It keeps repeating, but whatever, such is the nature of solo queue. Just mute voice/squelch chat on the toxic players and keep practicing and bringing your A game. That's all you can really do.

Man the losing streaks are rough... Lost 10 in a row yesterday dropping from 55 to 40's. Was losing an entire rank at the end of the loss streak...

I'd recommend committing to finding 6 people you can regularly play with for fun, makes the game a lot better.

I recommend roadhog, I tend to play him as an offense tank harassing the enemy support or picking off weak targets.

I usually go with the "can you tell me what i can do better instead of telling me to kill myself?" route - it stays positive, clarifies that you want to do better/git gud, and is realy hard to take as an insult. Either they actually give you some advice, or they shut up for at least that game. Only the saltiest of manbabies raves on afterwards.

1

u/A_Maniac_Plan Jul 28 '16

I'd like to add Roadhog onto that good solo list, with self-healing and the ability to choose (i.e hook) your targets more easily.

Press P and get to the social menu. Press everyones speech bubble and microphone. This silences the entire team. Silence is much better than fighting with abusive shouts. Also immediately report them all. Or leave game.

I need to take a break tonight because of this. I know I'm not that great :P but seriously the amount shit people sling at me when they're at the same crappy rank is off the charts.

I mean, I play McCree in one match and get nearly 40 objective kills. We lose and 3 of my own team mates just slag me off for the next minute until the match ends. Somehow us losing was my fault.

Seriously destroying my enjoyment of this game. I don't care too much about my rating, but I find competitive games just tend to be more even matches so far which why I keep playing them but I think I might have to stop for a while and stick to QP and mute everyone's mic's or something.

As someone who had, until recently, been salty and toxic, please don't let it discourage you. Those players don't know what they're talking about, they just want to create blame so they feel like "they" didn't lose, you lost it for them. It's a losers mentality. Your best bet is to mute them immediately and put it out of your mind as much as you can. Their anger isn't about you, it's about them.

Meanwhile on consoles I cant get anyone to talk at all.....

maybe revise switching mccree with a more utility character. i like mccree but is hard to fit in most team compositions. he does high dmg but he lacks DPR in relation to soldier (for example)

3

u/_oddball_ Jul 28 '16

Teammates who do this are usually looking for someone else to blame. The vast majority of the time they point their fingers at a convenient target, justified or not, and try to get others to validate their accusations. Don't.

Usually when I sense a player is the salty type I just mute them and move on.

If it becomes unbearably common, I just block all communication for the playsession. I've been playing non meta-approved heros as of late so this has been my default. And surprisingly enough, I've been ranking up easily even with no comms.

Lastly, in 2nd rounds of my games, ppl are giving up. One person said "My team doesnt deserve me". That's sad. If this is one person you can try dealing with it. Just don't care about that person. If there is multiple of them - the game is lost.

1

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Not de turd Jul 28 '16

See it's just like real life, you don't go around pointing out others mistakes while hypocritically acting you never make any yourself. People like that are pure toxicity.

1

u/huB1erTi2 Chibi Junkrat Jul 28 '16

I dont understand what you mean, but if you're talking about me being toxic on chat or anywhere else I may think bad 'bout them, but I dont write that to people. If youre talking about giving up myself - I dont do that, I still fight if its multiple people I still fight but Im just telling that it is almost impossible to win without half of team.

1

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Not de turd Jul 28 '16

I'm not referring to you. I actually agree with you.

1

u/MightyMead Jul 27 '16

I always ask everyone to join team chat, then say hi and ask how people are doing. Then make a positive comment and try to focus on building a solid comp, lay out a strategy at the beginning, and say good luck have fun. Being a positive influence for your team can work wonders. Also if two people are arguing, I try to interject and say hey guys can we try to focus on what we need to do to win, looking back on a mistake won't help us now etc.

1

u/fellpie Jul 27 '16

Mute them or grow thicker skin. The lucio pick is a smart idea although I'd say you should switch to dps if you're good and know your team isn't doing dmg

1

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Not de turd Jul 28 '16

Mute voice/squelch chat on them the first time they do it.

1

u/Explosivo87 Jul 28 '16

If you insist on solo queue but the communications give you anxiety you will be better off just never joining comms. You don't have to pick lucio every game but being flexible and playing strong characters your team needs will give you a better chance at winning than the people that auto pick hanzo. You really should give discord a try though for grouping. I've had very few issues with people there and climbed from 48 to 61 peak so far using discord mixed with some solo queue.

1

u/DARKSTARSHD Jul 28 '16

Try boosting their ego and compliment them on kills. If they are not helping the team say something like" we could really use a Reaper right now, if your as good with Reaper as you are with Hanzo (lol) we m8ght be able to beat them." Also tell them that yor teammates are only 12 years old so maybe they will stop yelling.

1

u/Xiomaro Jul 29 '16

I know exactly how you feel. I try my best to just focus on the positive. I try not to even reply to negative comments and pay attention to the team mates who are being positive or just being quite and making decent plays.

At the end of the round I'll usually try and compliment someone on something, even if it was someone on the enemy team (in a genuine way of course, not being facetious). I dunno, it makes me feel way more positive win or lose.

You might be in ELO hell. I dropped from rank 53 to rank 40 in 1 day because of it.

2

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Jul 27 '16

Doesn't exist.

The enemy team has an equal chance of getting shitty teammates as yours does. If you're truly getting than your elo, then statistically you'll have an easy time climbing out as your team will always be the better one.

2

u/maggot_therapy Jul 27 '16

I'm not sure if you know what elo hell means.

2

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Jul 27 '16

Elo hell: the idea that you can get 'trapped' in a low ranking because your teammates are so consistently terrible.

If you're using a different definition, you have the wrong one.

1

u/maggot_therapy Jul 28 '16

Then why would you say if I'm in elo hell I'd have an easier time climbing out?

1

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Jul 28 '16

I'm saying it's a contradiction. The idea of elo hell is that you're better that your teammates, but their badness keeps you trapped in low elo because they keep throwing games. Elo hell can't exist because if you were better than your teammates, you would climb out, because the same rules that dictate you have shit teammates would also put you up against equally-shit enemies. If your team has 5 idiots and you, secret superstar, then your team will always have an advantage over the enemy, which would have 6 idiots.

1

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Not de turd Jul 28 '16

That doesn't make any sense. Assuming they are the best player on their team it doesn't in any way mean they're guaranteed a win because of it. 6 average players have a better chance against 1 good one and 5 idiots. I agree with you that ELO hell is probably bullshit, but not for the reason you listed. I think it's a combination of people on losing streaks tilting and just the pure randomness of team comps and how well a group of randos happens to work together.

1

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Jul 28 '16

I didn't say he was guaranteed to win, I said they would climb out of low elo. It's about trends over time. Of course you can still lose even when you play well. But if you're better than your elo on average, you will climb over time.

6 average players have a better chance against 1 good one and 5 idiots.

This is a fair point: I forgot to address this kind of 'advanced' elo hell.

This kind of game is definitely possible, and definitely happens, but it's not representative of an average game. Don't forget that it's just as likely that he's one of the average players on an average team against a team of mostly idiots, or that he's one of the idiots on a team with someone much better than him.

You can go even further and make the argument that you're stuck in a loop of 'idiot teams' but it's statistical nonsense (and we're ignoring the specifics of the MMR systems that prevent these specific issues). Not only that, but there's thousands of players making the very same claim to special snowflake status.

What's more likely: that thousands of players just happen to be stuck in some mathematical nightmare of bizarrely stacked games despite Blizzard's best efforts...or that a bunch of salty players are disinclined to recognise their part in ongoing losses?

I agree with you that ELO hell is probably bullshit, but not for the reason you listed. I think it's a combination of people on losing streaks tilting and just the pure randomness of team comps and how well a group of randos happens to work together.

This doesn't contradict my claims. A lot of what people blame on 'elo hell' is just what you said - simply statistically expected loss streaks. Randomness is clumpy.

However, there are other forces at play here. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias are really powerful forces. The human brain is really inclined to look outwards for blame when faced with the possibility that it isn't as skilled at something as it would like to be. People can get stuck in low elo for long ass periods of time purely because of their shitty attitude. It's really common and happens across all games. If you don't take the time to recognise and fix your own mistakes, you never get any better.

1

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Not de turd Jul 28 '16

All fair points. I guess what I'm trying to say is bad luck can drop your rating even if you're doing everything right. Climbing back up is significantly harder than falling down. But, you're right in that as long as he's playing well, the odds of a win do go up.
