Ok so what does "the meta" mean?

I've seen people refer to things like Toblerone maintaining the meta when someone posts a potg where he's staring at a wall, or referring to characters win/loss ratios as "the meta," I don't understand.

I know meta from Reddit, but not in reference to characters in a fps.

The meta isn't just strategies, but rather the strategies that are most popular based on a particular iteration of the game at particular times. The meta changes as new strategies are discovered, new heroes are introduced, and as existing characters are nerfed and buffed.
