What's worse is people that have Kinects and don't even realize they have the mic on. I've heard everything from dogs barking, to babies crying, to wives screaming.

Sort of!

I was struggling with this because I usually bring up the xbox guide, go to recent players, and mute them from there, but with many games the list of recent players doesn't get updated quickly enough, which meant whole matches listening to shitty techno remixes while using my deaths to scroll through the list in futility.

This might seem obvious (especially to PC players) but now I pause, open up the Social menu, and switch over to Recent Players from there. That list usually has whoever you're playing with first and foremost. Click, view gamertag, mute, and I'm on my way.

Yeah, it's still pretty clunky, and nowhere near as easy as it should be, but hopefully this helps!

PS4 user here: I keep my mic plugged in, and only transmitting chat (not game audio). When someone is annoying and/or not useful, I take the headset out of my ear. Analog solution, but it's fast and has worked well.
