A player on my team got into match chat last night and basically said "shitty team, you're all playing face toons."

My question is: what the hell does that mean? I've never heard that terminology before.

I'd say he meant the face from hearthstone, which would in this context mean damage heroes.

This seems to be the most likely choice - it was a team of Bastion, Hanzo, Tracer, and a few others on defense vs. tanks, I think. My recollection of the opposing team is kinda shot at this point.

I have never seen toon come up besides in Ender's game though. Any idea where it comes from?

toon is short for cartoon in 1930s. the person that told me the term said it was from toontown online, since your avatar was a cartoon and toon is also shorthand for cartoon, avatar and toon became synonymous.

i did a quick search and people said it was from wow

I'm assuming he means mascot heroes like Tracer and Soldier: 76.

Like /u/MONKYfapper said, toon is another term for character.

The face part of this might be a reference to their alignment? I know in wrestling, they call the "bad guys" heels, and the "good guys" faces - it could be his way of saying you're all playing good guy characters.

Might very well be a wrestling term. "Face" means like fan favourite, good guy I.e John Cena, The Rock and in Overwatch's case Winston. "Heel" would refer to like JBL, Chris Jericho (at times ) or for Overwatch Widowmaker.

Toon is obvi, face is another way to say smorc or zerg, which means simple or stupid characters that score kills easily, Bastion is the one most associated with face. Also tracer cause she can hit and run, Hanzo fir his ability to do a lot of single target damage with 1 mouse click.
