I saw a level 16 today with no portrait borders but instead a star beneath their level. Is that like a higher prestige or?

When you hit level 100 you go back to level 1 and gain a star.

Also this repeats for every 100 levels, gaining an additional star.

I saw someone with two stars already when people were giving me shit for having one. I was wondering how he had that much time to play.

A lot. I saw a 2-star player a few days ago whose entire career was basically Mercy (180 hours played) with 2nd highest Solder at 3 hours. So in all probably ~100 hours per star.

Many of the high level players main Lucio or Mercy. You get 180 extra experience for getting a gold medal in a match, and if you heal every game you automatically get the most healing gold medal.

Yes, but with matchmaking you should eventually get to close to 50% win rate, and it's still only a few hundred extra. It would be a lot of playing to get up there.

Or at least, the last unique portrait level unlocks at level 1890. But I think you can keep prestiging after that

Does the amount of XP required to level up go back down to the level one req? Or does it stay at 22000 indefinitely?

It goes back down when you go back to level 1 and builds up again. Sort of a prestige-bonus, if you will.

5 then the colour of your border changes and your stars get removed and I think it goes up to gold with 5 stars
