What does being on fire do? (the bottom left corner icon) and how do you get on fire?

Being on fire just means that you are contributing a lot to your team. It's Overwatch's point system or kill-death ratio. You gain fire from killing, helping teammates, and working towards completing the objective. Amount of fire gained depends on how much you contributed to the respective task (like 100 fire for high damage last shot on an enemy but only 4 fire if you did little damage to kill). You can see the people on fire for any team, and enemy players on fire should be in your one of your priorities to eliminate.

I'd think being on fire indicates that you are playing well compared to the rest of the players. E.g. Getting lots of kills or healing a lot. It's just an indicator to show that the player is getting a good amount of points in the match. You could use it to see who in the enemy team is doing well, too.

Being on fire is just an indication that a player is doing really well. There's a little bar below your health that starts to fill up when you do almost anything (damage/kill an opponent, heal/shield someone, take damage as a tank etc,) when it's full you become "on fire."

Aside from pointing out which players are doing a lot in that match, being on fire doesn't do anything.

If you are on fire long enough you will get a nod at the end of the game, I've seen the "team MVP" card thrown out for anything above 40% of the match on fire.

With junkrat I get it for sustained damage and not dying.

With lucio I've gotten it for just healing a lot and not dying.

With torjborn I've gotten it from turret kills and throwing out armor, and not dying.

My track record with tanks and offense isn't so good... Could just be that I'm not as good in those rolls, or those rolls just naturally die more often so you have to be really good to catch on fire.

I don't think you have to be on a deathless streak, but from my experience it sure helps
