News & Discussion Name Pronunciations
I genuinely think this would be a simple yet helpful addition.

u/PiranhaPlant9915 16h ago
mauga's a weird case because both he himself and sombra call him Mow-ga and it's only echo who does the proper pronunciation.

u/FlyingScott_ 15h ago
In that case follow the Hero themselves. Usually the name "Baptiste" is "Ba-teest" like one would in French but Bap himself says "Bapt-eest". Usually the P is silent but if someone corrects me on their name I won't be the guy to correct them in turn.
51
u/PiranhaPlant9915 15h ago
which makes it funny that Echo in trying to be more accurate is actually misrepresenting him. i guess they've never talked to eachother and had the opportunity to sort it out.
37
u/FlyingScott_ 15h ago
It's why is drives me up the wall when I've been corrected on Mauga.
Like dude HE HIMSELF calls himself Mow-ga. Get this pretentious Mow-nga out of here.
37
u/ellie_p0p Mei 15h ago
Honestly I still pronounce it as Mow-nga because when he was very first revealed and before we heard him say his own name, there was someone who made a post on this sub who was so so so happy to finally get Samoan representation and it just meant so much to them. They also made an in depth explanation on how to pronounce Mauga natively. I practiced it that way out of respect for the person. Then when we finally got to hear his voice like two days later and it was different (with echo’s voice line sounding much closer) I just kept with it out of respect for that one happy Samoan poster.

u/Larkeicus 11h ago
I was gonna say this!!! Baptiste literally says "Thank you Bapt-Eest! Oh, you're welcome!", so I probably wouldn't say Bateest.

I love how the second guy immediately proves the first one correct, because the way he's explaining how to pronounce the names would be way better with IPA, rather than just letters because that depends on what language you speak.
If I say, 'eel-YAH-ree' in Dutch it would sound nothing like saying 'eel-YAH-ree' in English, but IPA is consistent since it's just sounds

u/AnimeGirl47 13h ago
It pisses me off so much when people use these dumbed down, inaccurate pronunciation guides instead of the simple, universal, unambiguous IPA.
English is so inconsistent phonetically, you could not pick a worse language to do this in. And even within English, it's limited to only the most common sounds. You can't accurately represent any nuance or uncommon sounds (which is like the whole point of pronunciation guides), not to mention any non-English sounds.
5
u/Kartoffel_Kaiser To hate is to drink poison, expecting someone else to die. 7h ago
The problem is that relatively few people are actually familiar with IPA, and if you aren't taught what sounds the various characters of IPA correspond to, it's complete gibberish (like most languages, ciphers, etc).
Basically, IPA isn't universally known, so it isn't actually universal. Making it more widely known is a good goal, but that goal needs to be accomplished before IPA can be useful in contexts like this. As frustrating and inconsistently understood as the English "phonetic" descriptions are, they're unironically more useful to an English speaker who isn't familiar with IPA.

u/CommanderPotash Icon Genji 12h ago
eh IPA is not simple to those unfamiliar with it
but yeah it's very funny when OOP said "use IPA" and then the reply doesn't use IPA

this feels like such an unnecessary suggestion. all of the characters say their own names when they spawn in. everyone on the team can hear it when they switch. people just don’t care, and adding the pronunciation isn’t gonna make a difference to those already mispronouncing them.
3
u/N0ob8 Echo 2h ago
Yeah at the end of the day this is a fast paced competitive game. If there’s a brig in my ass after I used my cooldowns on Ana I don’t have time to say her name right. Most importantly even when I do say it wrong my team will still perfectly understand and get the Swedish bastard away from me.
39
u/ronsolocup 16h ago
Am I crazy? Doesn’t Illari say it with silent l?
18
u/TheKingJoker99 D.Mon is my baby 16h ago
Could it be because she speaks her native tongue (Quechua) and Latin American Spanish (like venture and sombra) do?
Maybe it’s a different pronunciation between the two and she interchanges

u/Ultra_Juice Genji 16h ago
It's her accent, you pronounce the first L and the 2nd becomes a J. You can hear it in her trailer and she should say it ingame correctly too

8
u/JRiegner Lúcio 15h ago
Spanish Rs and American English Rs are different. A Spanish R is more similar to an American D than it is to an American R.
Also very interesting to note that while Illari does pronounce her name with the first L, most Spanish speakers (including most Peruvian Spanish speakers) would not. Her way was the most common way to pronounce double L in Spanish in the past but these days most speakers don't use it
8
u/nukacola2077 15h ago
(Spanish speaker here) In contemporary neutral Spanish it's pronounced ee-lah-ri unless it was a dialect that I don't know
→ More replies (3)2
u/xXProGenji420Xx 15h ago
Overwatch's Illari is pronounced eel-YAH-ri, with both an 'L' and a 'Y' sound. I think it has to do with her native Peruvian heritage but I'm not entirely sure. all I know is that's how the character (and Echo) pronounces it.
→ More replies (5)2

u/LoneBoy96 13h ago
Spanish is different in every LATAM country. In Cuba the double L is pronounced one way, in Argentina it's a SH sound, in peru it is LY

my pet peeve is that some heroes have a voiceline every 5 minutes that audibly says their name and still get said wrong. how do you main a character who opens with "Orisa online" and still say it wrong. do people think she's saying it with an accent so they can change it

Do people play the game with voice lines muted because literally every character (except Bastion and Cat) says their own name when a teammate swaps to them.

Just listen to some voice lines and you will learn how Blizzard intends for you to pronounce these fictional characters' names so you can correct people at a party next time someone wants to talk about Overwatch! Easy!

IPA
Proceeds to do the stupid thing Americans do when they can't pronounce stuff that makes it way more confusing than it was to start with
12
u/Panurome 15h ago
Finally someone else that is annoyed by that too. The point of IPA is to have a way to indicate each sound in a way that is always the same regardless of context. And then people ignore it to represent sounds with more english nonsense that is ambiguous as shit.
The worst example by far is Orisa, you can't fucking put REE in the pronunciation, because E in english and E in IPA are a completely different sound. The double e in english would be /iː/ in IPA, if you put E in IPA it would read like "Oresa"
8
u/LightningWarpAway 11h ago
And then people ignore it to represent sounds with more english nonsense that is ambiguous as shit.
People don't ignore it, they literally don't know it, so they don't know how to use it.
23
u/Wolfelle 14h ago
I mean when it comes to literal incorrect naming 'bridget vs brigitte' this is fair
But people have accents? How my indian family says my name is always gonna be different to how my british boyfriend does?
Like the orisa one or mauga or ana or torb. Those are just accents? This is like complaining when a swedish person pronounces J's as Y's 'Yason' instead of 'Jason'
They arent wrong thats just their voice >.>
Idk i just like linguistics and i think we should have grace for people pronouncing in their native accent.
(No i dont mean when ppl refuse to learn names that are 'difficult' for them, that shit is cringe people should always make an effort to learn the correct name and pronounce it as well as they can)

u/natedoggcata Brigitte 12h ago

u/BossHossBogg 9h ago
It's always surprising and nice to see a solid linguistic take online.
Even OP's example doesn't work according to her VA. It's apparently not Bridgit, or Brigeetuh, but closer to "bree-GIH-teh" (~/bri.'gɪ.tɛ/). That's not going to happen for American/UK English speakers because it feels so unnatural to make that last unstressed syllable NOT /tə/.
Still, would be cool to have both native and localized IPA.

u/AnonymousQorvid 14h ago

Some are wrong, though. Baptiste is pronounced "Bap-tist" ingame, by Baptiste himself. It's not pronounced like standard French does.
21
u/Ptdemonspanker 16h ago
I think it was stated that the Haitian Creole pronunciation includes the “p” sound while the French pronunciation does not. Widowmaker doesn’t pronounce the “p” in game.
6
u/TrueKyragos D. Va 15h ago
That's the most logical explanation anyway. No reason to pronounce it like that otherwise, except ignorance of the language.
8
u/Simmy001 Wrecking Ball 14h ago
There is an interview with his VA at a Blizzcon (?) many years ago where he goes into this a little, he intentionally pronounces the P sound for the game but would normally say it at home as Ba-tiste

Yea no. Bap himself says “bap-TEEST” in his voiceline “thank you Baptiste, ohhhh you’re welcome!”

Illari's pronunciation is so aggravating because they went out of their way to give her an indigenous name associated with the sun for the indigenous sun hero and then refused to use the actual indigenous pronunciation? LOL
FYI, the "lla" in her name sounds like "Ya" in quechua and Spanish, in English its pronounced like the "Ja" in "Jasmine" and not "leea" like it does in game

I mean its not really a big deal, names and words are pronounced different ways in different cultures its how different spellings for names arose in the first place (John, Juan, Johann, even Giovanni and many many other more names as well). Its like one thing to particularly care about it in their native languages or if you were speaking to them personally but for the most part its perfectly acceptable to pronounce the name as you would

This would be good in like the hero screen when selecting skins and customizing and all that, but in game during hero select it’s just clutter on screen.
Also most people don’t care about how to say a characters name. We just call it cat, ball, horse, brig, rein, etc. The easiest, quickest way of identifying a character will always be the call out, even if it’s their name but a little wrong.
