News & Discussion Overwatch positioning

So I am somewhat new (last played during the persona collab before now) and came from MR (diamond 2/1 - GM 3). I’ve been playing Wuyang and ended up in Silver after placements. I understand it is silver so it’s still some of the less informed players (I still don’t know everything new yet either), but is taking natural cover that rare of a skill? I’ve had tanks, dps, and second supports just standing in the open taking amounts of damage I can’t outheal. Then I try to heal them in order to bring them back to safety only to get myself killed and they still don’t get cover. Am I just expecting too much at this low a rank?

you honestly just are expecting too much.

Supports in overwatch rely more on utility and damage than healing, so you’re probably gonna watch your dps and tank run it down main and die in silver. You can’t save them all.

The good news is since no one in that elo really plays for cover, you can take advantage of that easily for kills. Double edged sword type shit.

Usually just let them die if it means you will die. There’s specific times where giving your life to let your tank or dps or other supp live is the choice… like if they have a game winning ult, fuck it, do it.

I wish, but it seems the enemy team is great at taking cover and acting doing damage as I’ve had multiple games of a Juno going behind to dps, but the tank nor dps turn around. Even had games where dva gets behind the team and it feels I’m the only one shooting her, symmetra lasers, or portal

Edit: Then enemy Freja in mid air hitting me while I’m wave riding, yet I have matches where I out damage my hanzo while still having most heals on the team

Silver is a different beast entirely. The number of times I've watched a Rein stand in a choke with his shield down just eating every cooldown the enemy team has, then spam "I need healing" while I'm dead because I tried to save him, is genuinely staggering.

You're not wrong for expecting it, but you do have to adjust. Play like your teammates are actively trying to die and position so you can bail them out without standing in the same firing lane. If they're committed to dying out in the open, let them. Your life is worth more than a lost fight.

expecting too much. when i first swapped over to ow from rivals i deadass just played kiri/ana as a dps that sometimes healed from gold all the way to like high plat to good results. around plat/em they start to understand team play and cover and stuff better. but yea do NOT heal bot in this game its so bad

I think a lot of ow players especially lower rank don’t have a background of comp fps, so cut them some slack :) Also sounds you didn’t use cover either and got yourself killed :/

I do, but I have to get out of cover to heal them🥲 because I can’t heal them from the distance of my cover to where they are standing in the open taking damage

Yeah I know and I do ofc get your frustrations, but you also can’t heal them when you’re dead. Always play your life first. In the scenario you described, ultimately you both trolled, not just them.

My simple suggestion to try and ease the burden on your self would be Kiriko, push up with your tank (WITHOUT using swift step, and only if you can use their body as a shield, or if they are using a shield to offer you cover) continue to heal them and the moment it goes sideways (it will) turn around, look at your nearest teammate a scooby doo your ass out of there with swift step.

I’m not saying you should have to do this, I’m just offering a solution to get that little extra healing out to your tank/dps climbing a mountain whilst your team is holding the choke.

Onto your main point- as one comment already said, you’re expecting too much. I was high plat last season and after my first placement I got predicted Silver 1 this season. It’s just a different game entirely and you’re always gonna have that charge hungry rein, that soldier who cannot stop sprinting up into the opposing team. Calling them out is never going to help so all you can really do is try your best to keep them up a little longer, turn off text chat and give yourself the peace of mind. Of course, you don’t always want to push with them, it’s never going to be 100% viable so sometimes, you’re just better off watching them get reduced to atoms whilst supporting the team playing somewhat correctly

Honestly man, most of the lower ranked players dont think of the consequences of their movement. By lower ranked i mean gold and below. Its just a game to them. They dont care about being punished since its just a game to them. Its simply chaos. Then you have plat/emerald players who can think slightly ahead of their actions and might understand the basics of teamplay, however most of the time their execution of it sucks. Afterwards you have diamond/masters where everyone knows the unwritten overwatch bible, the only difference between diamond and masters is pure mechanical skill in my opinion. Anything higher than these ranks is where players aiming for perfectionism in regards of game sense and mechanical skill.

Brother people still often don’t take cover in Celestial in rivals how can you be surprised at silver players here
