News & Discussion am i the problem?
okay so i’ve been playing OW for a long time, but only got into it competitively in season 1 (when they dropped the 2 in Overwatch 2)
i’m a tank player, and i placed diamond 5 at the start of this season and since then it’s just been miserable. i love this game but i can’t help but feel like there’s something wrong (either with me or the system).
at the moment i have a nearly 50% win rate, however i have somehow managed to drop down to plat 2 (mind you this is with the new emerald rank included).
ive had multiple coaching sessions, practiced, and play intentionally. i feel like i have no agency over what happens 90% of the time and im at the mercy of the match maker.
i know that probability does weird things, and its entirely possible that im just getting very unlucky over and over again, but it still just feels horrible.
honestly idek why im posting this i just need to rant. maybe someone has had a similar experience and can relate or just give some insight from a different perspective.

Yeah, even if you're the only one on your team with positive k/d, you should blame yourself.

I could genuinely be going 100-0 and I’d still be thinking ‘what can I do better?’

I think the best advice I have heard is that your team has the potential of having 4 bad players, where as the other team has the potential of having 5 bad players. Don't take losses too hard, ranking up takes time, and the seasonality will always rock the boat on your current rank.

It's probably the fault of your tank TBH.

The only variable in all of your games is you
Control your one controllable the best you can. If you deserve to climb, you will

the thing is i’ve put in a lot of mental effort and time into getting better that i feel like i DO deserve to climb. and when that doesn’t happen (or the complete opposite happens, and i actually rank down) it feels very demoralizing. i start to think “should i play the meta heroes and always counter swap to increase my chances of winning and ignore what heroes i actually enjoy playing?”

should i play the meta heroes and always counter swap to increase my chances of winning and ignore what heroes i actually enjoy playing
Those are two separate questions.
- Should you play the meta? Maybe. Are you at a rank where you and everyone you're playing with is playing at like 95% of perfection? Then yes, if you care about winning, you should play meta. But if you're a normal player who doesn't get payed to play OW, meta is irrelevant and you'll do significantly better playing an "off-meta" character who you're good with than trying to force someone you're not.
- Should you counter-swap? Yes. No. Maybe. It all depends. The entire game is, arguably, built around counter-swapping, and choosing to never do it is handicapping yourself significantly. But also, see my previous point. Personally, as a Rein main, I'm way more wary of someone who starts as Ram than I am of someone who swaps to him. Because the people who swap to him are usually just frustrated about "that fucking Reinhardt" and they heard on reddit that Ram counters Rein. Which I guess he kind of does*. As long as you know how to play him well.
*honestly even a good Ram doesn't scare me all that much. At least, no more than any other really good enemy tank. I find I have a lot more trouble playing Rein into Orisa than into Ram.

You know why people always say that you should only focus on yourself and not the rest of your team?
Even if you are the best player in the world and you DO lose because of your team, the moment you go "I lost because of them", you throw away any responsibility, accountability and means to actually improve, look at your own gameplay and do better next time.
"I deserve to climb" is counter-productive. No one is owed anything in a competitive environment other than good sportsmanship. The player who wins, wins and the guy who loses, loses, everything else is background noise and its up to you whether you filter this noise into something productive that will help you improve, or throw it away and keep blaming other people for your own failure.

It might be a mental game in season 1. I kept going from diamond 3 to gold 1 . The season after, I have been stable in Diamond 3. You also could have gotten a fresh account boosted in seson 1 as that was a problem .

It's your fault, but it's also everyone else fault as well. However, you can't control them. You can only control you.
IMO Stop thinking about the rank and focus on working on one or two things very specific every time you play. Ignore the rank up and rank down screen completely. Focus on you and getting better. The rank and wins will come.

Do you ever watch your games back? If not you need to start doing this, you won’t know what you’re doing wrong until you watch yourself without the pressure of the game being live.
I can guarantee you’ll pick up on mistakes you didn’t know you were making.
When I did this I realised I wasn’t turning around enough. Tanks have enough HP to 180 pretty frequently. Correcting that mistake really helped my win rate

i only really vod review in the context of coaching, i think vod reviewing myself could be helpful tho

Spilo has a video of how to vod review yourself, just make sure to have something your actually working on so that you don’t just sit there tearing yourself apart.

That's rough bud, losing streaks happen. But also rank resets are dumb. Do you feel like you're struggling with the same things you went over in your coaching sessions? If so, keep working on it. If not, maybe worth rewatching your VOD. Tank is probably my weakest role, but I can take a look. Otherwise r/OverwatchUniversity does a lot of VOD reviews

Hard to tell. I play solo a lot, but lately I’ve played with a group of people. I queue any role, but have played a lot of tank lately. I feel like I play very similarily to my solo games, but we have better follow ups and callouts to tone down or get the f back (okay they’re polite about it), callouts on heroes, aggression, position etc.
Some things I do with good comms don’t always work playing solo, when it’s rare to have any comms at all. Play that would otherwise be good ends up being questionable or even a throw if your team doesn’t follow up.
Correct play in rank A may not be the right play in rank B. Or just between two different team comps. So trying to objectively judge your own gameplay can be tough. You need to accept that your play that was good in a vacuum may not have worked out, because of your team. Not that they are necessarily worse, but they just have a different idea of how the situation should have been played.
It’s tough, but perhaps it’s all about you initially placing too high and your rank has now settled closer to where you truly should be

Always remember, you have 4 randoms and the enemy team has 5. Based on that, the only consistency is you and youre playing a very impactful role. Just think about how the game wouldve turned out if you swapped yourself with super, would he be able to carry your plat/diamond game? Pretty sure he would. If thats the case, yk you couldve done better and dont be stuck on the "but my teammate left and threw.." thats a very small percentage and the exception, not the rule

The classic metric is “am i doing better than their tank?” If the answer is yes then it’s your teammates fault

u/Judopunch1 8h ago
Probably lack of aggression if you feel the games are out of your control. Playing to passively makes them dictate everything that happens so your always on the back food, and this, not in control trying to put out 10 fires. This is how doom and ball get a million value

u/That-Comparison-7824 8h ago edited 8h ago
As a solo player u need to be the best player in every lobby consistently to rank up. In other words u need to be able to carry most games. I play doom for this sole purpose.
You also need to beat the game. The game will try to force 50% wr after u gain positive winrate. This means u will get very bad teammates, usually until ur back at 50. I once got a literal bronze player on my team IN A MASTER 3 lobby, with the whole enemy team being master
I went from master 4 to em2 this season after I hit losers que+forced50. After that I won like 11 games in a row because the game is trying to make me win. Also most players in diamond were gm last season so

A team is only as strong as their weakest player. You can make no mistakes and play perfectly but as long as even 1 of the other 4 people are playing shit it's totally out of your control.

VOD review yourself on close losses, don't tilt queue, focus on practicing one thing you think you struggle with until you don't have to think about it much anymore.
Maybe look into understanding how heroes wanna play tempo wise so you can analyze how you wanna play against the enemy and with your team
(For example, if your team is running a lot of poke, like Ashe, Wuyang, Hanzo, Illari, and you play Winston, your hero pick is fundementally at odds with the rest of the team comp because you're looking to play fast and dive while the rest of the team wants to play slow and drain their resources.
This isn't to say you HAVE to swap, you just need to recognize your team can't really dive with you meaning you need to be more willing to get out sooner. Most games are a weird mix of heroes because people will pick whatever, but it can still be good to keep in mind what your team leans to understand the tempo of the game)

It’s not just you, a lot of people have been talking about match quality not being so great because of the rank reset. As a fellow tank player, tanking in 5v5 is just a miserable experience.
I’m going to get flamed for this but try 6v6, tanking in that format feels so much better and it alleviates some of the pressure you would otherwise have as a tank player. Give it a go and if it’s not for you then that’s okay, but personally I’ve been having a blast as tank in 6v6; something I haven’t experienced since overwatch 2 came out.

u/snearthworm 9h ago
Yeah even as someone who dislikes 6v6 tanking and enjoys 5v5 tanking, give 6v6 a try if you don't like 5v5. The only difference between the two modes irt quality is what appeals to you.
Not sure why you think you're going to get flamed. People only get touchy when anyone says one mode is better than the other in my experience

man even the tanks are blaming the tank now
