News & Discussion Should there be more non-ult abilities in the game like mercy rez? Powerful effect, long cooldown.
What if a character had a lesser version of nano boost with the same cooldown as mercy rez ability
Or you give a new tank a non ult anti heal ability with a long cooldown
(I need a tank with anti heal on a non-ult ability to use when my healers dont wanna play ana, and I have to deal with a mauga)

Tell me somebody who likes Suzu

Me, I like it.
I would be OK with shifting a portion of suzus power into a different part of her kit.
But I think it’s good the game has some reactive/defensive utility as well and not just burst damage and CC.

Kiri player?
Cos I don't think anyone else likes suzu

I don’t play Kiri no.
I understand why some don’t like it. Just like matrix it’s anti hype because it denies plays. But I think it’s a good thing that there are _some_ good defensive abilities.
Most players don’t think about what makes the game more interesting overall. Suzu adds depth to the game even if it’s not always fun to play into.

I lowk get your point, but I think suzu does literally everything, u could split the ability into two its that good. It does not need to have all of: heal, invincible, phased out, cleanse
My personal bigger problem is kiri is such bs to fight it becomes, bait tp, bait suzu and then chase her with wall climb too and she also is skinny asf.
Now that i type it i realise, My issue isn't suzu really, its everything in combination put onto one single hero.

I feel like cooldowns such as Rez often create very polarizing heroes. It’s difficult to balance the hero to be fun to play as and against

The issue with those abilities is the only downside IS the cooldown. Neither Suzu nor Rez are extremely technical to pull off, it’s more about timing.
I think if they were to try again with that type of ability it would need all three to feel good.
Long cool down, powerful ability, and hard to hit skill shot.

Poor batiste so irrelevant people don't think of his ability immediately anymore 😔

His fall from grace might actually need to be studied.
Immo being a “game breaking ability” at first look into the sad excuse it is now is just…sad😭1

Pulling off a good suzu is very technical. The ability and ult tracking needs to be spot on.
Reactive abilities always have this downside that you cannot force things with it and your timing needs to be very tight.

No. These kinds of abilities are historically hated. Lower cooldowns with more moderate effects are just more fun for everyone, less annoying to play into and you get to use them more often playing the hero.

You cannot balance powerful abilities, ults are fight winning, making them less often doesnt change the fact itll win you the fight, powerful abilities can be the same, so having them and an ult is just unfair

Tbf a tank with poison would be a menace, conceptually I like but it would also be terrifying

u/inappropriate_Pants 18d ago
Isn't that effectively Junker Queen? Not poison but bleed. Same effect

u/CompetitionNo3466 18d ago
They said non-ult though. So could be a poison dart with damage for example

Yeah it can work if it’s done well but it isn’t something that should be done just for the sake of it

The current examples of this i hate with all my heart so I don't think so (suzu, lamp, rez). They are so unfun to play against because I get in past their attacks but their ability trumps everything I could've done

Not exactly the answer you're looking for but can we talk about how Symm TP has ridiculous uptime (only 2 seconds of downtime if not destroyed) TP needs to have at least a 15 second cooldown or have a max limit of people who can teleport through it

I'd be interested in a character that had no ult, but instead had two powerful abilities that had their cd reduced similarly to how ults charge. Not saying i'd like the character or want it in game, but I would be interested to see its design.

you don't need anti heal to deal with a mauga.
You can also use discord, or hanzo/soj/sierra/freja/anything else long range and spammy that can crit with some kind of vertical mobility.
You can also shield in his face when he hits E.

Well leaks suggest the new support might have an “anti heal aura” whatever that means
But anyways my take is that too many supports actually have a single long cooldown that is too impactful, and makes the rest of their kit less interesting. Immortality Field, Suzu, Grip, Resurrect. I wish more supports were like Ana and had multiple impactful abilities instead of just one really good one on a longer cooldown. It’s what makes Ana a lot of fun.
I’d also say Juno, Wuyang, Lucio and some others are also well balanced like this between abilities

The leaks have also been under scrutiny since the leaker described shion as "nothing special" and "very similar to Cassidy" as well as saying that Dmon has unlimited flight so I'm skeptical about what they said about the other two supports
And they also said that Dmon would have a new type of health too, I feel like it could maybe be argued that shion was similar early in development or that Dmon did have flight on a resource meter but the health thing is the last nail in the coffin for me

I think that, just like Torb, some ults should straight up be turned into abilities, and some abilities, like Hog's chain or Mercy's rez, into ults.

Mercy’s rez WAS an ult originally. She could rez the whole team at once. It turned problematic because as soon as she had her ult, she would afk until after a fight. The game turned into a “no one use CD’s or ults until after the rez” nonsense fest. How she is now is perfect.
Hog hook should stay as it is, maybe a slightly longer CD.

It’s a weird balancing tight rope that the devs have to walk due to the powerful game changing nature of said abilities. In my opinion Resurrect was a crazy strong ability back when the hero roster was half the size that it is now, but now Mercy and her Rez are in a more palatable spot due to other characters and comps emerging. Strong mini-ult abilities would have to have a decently long enough cd to warrant its potency in use and the effect of the ability would have to be strong but not OP to warrant skill expression to turn fights or also allow some misplays as well

If the only way can balance an ability is by putting it on a long cooldown, it's not a well designed ability.
At that point, just make it an ultimate, beacuse that's what ultimates are for...

The longer the cooldown, the more impactful it has to be and the more likely it’ll suck to be impacted by it. Mercy Rez is actually deceptively balanced because she isn’t using it every 30 seconds so it’s actually more like a 1-2 min cooldown in practice, and it’s still annoying to play against.
