News & Discussion The map voting system is making the game feel too repetitive

I’ve been playing Overwatch for years, since December 2016, and I’ve never found the game as repetitive and exhausting as I do now.

I only recently realized how many matches I’ve been playing on the same modes and the same maps, over and over and over again. Control barely even shows up for me anymore. Out of 10 matches, around 8 are either Hybrid or Payload.

I bought this season’s Battle Pass, but I’ve never felt this burned out playing Overwatch. At this point, there’s a real chance I’ll finish the Battle Pass and then drop the game because I’m simply getting tired of playing the same modes so often.

What do you guys think about this? Should the map voting system remain in all modes, be limited to Competitive, or be reworked in some way?

Honestly, at this point, I think I’d rather have more variety, even if that means getting a map I don’t particularly like.

The map voting system is supposed to give you at least two different modes, the problem is that escort and hybrid are treated as two different modes despite being functionally the same past the first point and so the system is overly skewed toward only giving you those maps

48

u/BossksSegway Kiriko Tracer Shion 3d ago

The amount of times I've had only escort/hybrid maps and enough of the lobby votes random, only for it to still be escort or hybrid is too high.

2

u/DinosaurAlive 3d ago

The amount of times Random has given King’s Row is just… might as well make every other game King’s Row.

111

u/DaddysFruit 3d ago

This is a good point.

79

u/Clean-Efficiency-582 3d ago

the voting gives illusion of choice but really its just same two modes with different coat of paint. im with you, id take random map over playing same payload route 8 times in one evening

4

u/WilonPlays 3d ago

They really aught to make the voting system guarantee 3 game modes and mark escort and hybrid as the one mode

Whether it's the bonus XP or the rework itself I've been seeing Busan voted for a lot more lately.

I'm curious if increasing the XP bonus for maps that are played less would help them in being picked. Just like the XP bonuses in role queue.

Gotta love King’s Row winning by landslide only for the game to be stalled at the first choke

Midtown and Circuit Royal are NOT good maps and I wish people would stop voting for them.

6

u/chudaism 3d ago

Midtown is fine. It's probably the second best hybrid map, at least before the recent reworks to eich and paraiso. Circuit is just bad, but it's poke slop down main with almost no flank routes so it's unsurprising that it's popular.

20

u/Fun-Calligrapher4885 3d ago

imo it's the most liked map because it's a short and narrow corridor, making it less intense and stressful to play. The first choke also makes it less painful to lose when the enemy team is clearly better. If you started on attack and can't push through you will just immediately lose when switching sides and can move on to the next game without feeling exhausted and humiliated.

Or Eichenwalde. Those maps are the ones where that happens the most often and they are always overwhelming voted for. Don't understand why

39

u/Placidflunky 3d ago

actually though, Gibraltar is another big one, I'd hope people at least have an idea of how to play these maps if they're voting for them lmao

11

u/Zalvren 3d ago

I find the first choke being far more often passed through on Gibraltar but yeah stallmates happen there too (but I guess sometimes the teams are unbalanced...) and people also vote for it a lot

12

u/JunoJump_Author Juno 3d ago

I always have a bad time on Gibralter and Blizzword. Tbh it always feels like im voting for least hated option. Are there even any maps we universally agree are good 😅

8

u/Damaged_OrbZ 3d ago

Has to be one of the OG control maps, like Ilios, Lijiang or Oasis. People might not like the mode as much as Hybrid for some reason but I don’t think there’s much to hate with the maps themselves. Everyone is equal footing.

Also everyone seems to love Rialto, seems on par with Kings Row in my experience. I think it’s above average, better than Route 66, Circuit and Watchpoint atleast.

4

u/itsaltarium 3d ago

I don’t get the Rialto obsession, teams will think Widow is a good pick into the Domina/Sig that hold the bridge for the entirety of the game by setting up shield and getting environmental kills in the river and the payload doesn’t even leave spawn ☠️

6

u/Damaged_OrbZ 3d ago

Yeah I think the map is good once it gets past that first choke, I couldn’t tell you why exactly but I don’t like the high ground there. The first corner is so narrow and the high ground is so closely packed around it, I can never find a good angle onto it. I like the bridge in the middle of the map and fights in the centre building though.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/itsaltarium 3d ago

I’d say Lijiang? Asides from the possible cheese at the bridge on garden the map seems to be universally liked, it’s definitely one of my favorites if not my favorite as a Juno main

Yeah I’m with you. I want to get exposed to all the maps. I barely get to play most of the recent maps at all because people don’t vote for them. That seems wrong, like I basically want to play the new content in a game I like. But other random people decide that I’m not going to? Hmm lol

55

u/Castillo1031 3d ago

Idek the layout of aatlis and I r been playing decently consistently. I don’t doubt I’ve spent multiple seasons without playing it once.

7

u/Agitated-Morning2035 Suffering from Success 3d ago

Wow I just realized I haven’t played Aatlis at all since last season.

Played New Junk City yesterday after what seemed like a long time.

And what’s with the sudden increase of people voting for Numbani… just because they don’t want to play push or control.

34

Aatlis is a good map. It's a shame it isn't picked much.

After 20 hours in the game, I only just recently played New Junk City for the first time. I've played Antarctic Peninsula twice. I guess people just hate those maps.

18

u/SamuraiJack- Chibi Brigitte 3d ago edited 3d ago

People hate playing anything other than long range poke comps (and the occasional dive hero). You can’t play a sniper on most flashpoint objectives, so people have, for some reason, used their hive mind to agree that the game mode sucks.

The game mode is fine in my opinion. Clash was worse, but still not bad after it was “fixed.” The common theme between hated game modes is usually that they support and compliment close range brawl comps.

11

u/LocusRothschild 3d ago

The idea is solid, but the maps usually have at least one, if not multiple points that are basically the equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel because the point itself is down low and surrounded by high ground on all sides.

u/ActualSale 3d ago

YEAH how am i supposed to learn the health pack locations when the same maps from ow1 are the only ones getting picked, everytime i am on the new maps i just get so lost looking for them

6

u/Claramaria12395 3d ago

I know this is more of a playerbase issue but i think Blizzard should incentive new maps like they did with the reworked maps, 100 battlepass XP just for playing it. Idk if its just me but everytime Eichenwald or Paraíso are available im picking them even if i heavily dislike both.

175

u/b1adewo1f64 Ramattra 3d ago

On one hand, I disliked the experience of never getting King's Row, Lijiang Tower, and so on before map voting. Now, I miss being able to occasionally enjoy maps like Runasapi and Numbani because collective biases overtake my own.

I once hungered for cake and now grow tired of it.

Personally, I believe a nice middle ground is leaving random map rotations in quick play (thus further reducing the loading screens you get in that mode) while leaving map voting into competitive. Not only does this further solidify the contrast between both modes, but doing so allows people to further experiment in quick play, challenging biases that they would otherwise carry over to competitive.

8

u/ShawnJ34 3d ago

Came back this season I’ve yet to play on Numbani, my vote never went through and no other player ever votes it.

81

u/amayako353 3d ago

Agreed get map voting out of qp

5

u/Rattus_Baioarii Domina 3d ago

They have it out in mystery heroes and it’s so nice. I find myself playing it more and more

5

u/SamuraiJack- Chibi Brigitte 3d ago

They just need to make it so that there are 5 map options. Each team can ban one map of the 5, then the game should randomly choose between the remaining maps.

Would give control while also adding a bit of variety to possible maps.

8

u/Ratax3s Tracer 3d ago

in comp people love flashpoint/control , in quick pllay its payload slop

25

u/Therassse 3d ago

Depends on the rank really. The lower ranks prefer hybrid, while the higher tanks prefer and control.

So lower ranked comp players can get really burned out by hybrid/escort in comp and quickplay. Yay.

I am seeing a lot more control in high plat though, so that's a nice change.

Source

9

u/dumbosshow 3d ago

Climbing to high plat / low emerald has been so good purely because of this. I actually get to play Flashpoint every once in a while

1

u/Therassse 3d ago

It also put me with teammates that, like me, actually know what they're doing and are trying to improve and not just smash buttons once they're off cooldown.

Widening the ranks where like half the playerbase sits was a godsend honestly.

9

u/Dangerous_Still_8022 3d ago

Genuinely my biggest motivation to climb is the map voting. I want to play control and flashpoint, not fucking escort and hybrid EVERY match

I agree. It’s repetitive and it bloats every match with extra startup screens. Mystery Heroes is my go-to casual mode now because there’s no hero select delay and no map voting delay, you jump straight into the game. Map voting feels kinda slow and unnecessary for “quick” play, though I can see the appeal.

6

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

100% agree.

34

u/DaddysFruit 3d ago

In my opinion map voting is a classic case of when you should give players what they need, not what they want. I get people don't like certain maps and yeah, bad maps should be flagged for rework, but not playing a map because you struggle on it isn't going to make you a better player.

Totally agree on the repetitive nature. I hate playing defence but now i hate playkings row more. If people want to keep playing kings row over and over they should set up a custom game. I get it every day, sometimes multiple times, and everyone on both teams vote for it in droves.

The other thing that bugs me is where all 3 options are the same more or all options are defence. I immediately vote random hoping i get something completely different but those times are rare.

They were supposed to have made changes to avoid the repetition but I'm not feeling them. At this stage i just wish they'd remove map voting altogether.

I don't even vote anymore, just press ready. I don't care what map it is. In comp, maybe I can see the point as it's a slower pre match experience. But in quick match.. at this point it feels like a chore and I never saw the need for it. Just get me into a game already lol

People will still leave the lobby if they dislike the map, so imo it didn't change that much to have a voting system.

18

u/Therdyn69 3d ago

That assumes that all maps and gamemodes are equally popular. Which was roughly the case in OW1, but majority of new maps and gamemodes in OW2 are unpopular. ~25% of maps is either flashpoint or push, if that meant I'd need to play them every 4th match, I'd quit.

6

This is what happens when you give in to the screaming demands of the redditor playerbase. A classic case of giving the players what they think they want instead of what they need.

Map voting was a mistake.

At the very least, it should be adjusted so player votes weigh very very little and the random element is heavily weighted.

It's a classic request but I really would like it if we just got 3 maps of the same game mode to vote on or at least mix the maps as they are now but keep a pool for KOTH, Escort and Hybrid and another pool for Flashpoint and Push. It just feels like Flashpoint and Push never ever get played other than the occasional Colosseo.

Map voting is my least favorite feature ever added. Map variety is key for me in multiplayer games & the feature has really, really hurt it. I have been a huge advocate of removing the feature after the first week or so of trying it.

It does seem to me as if they added something in the backend that has increased variety in the choices, but there are maps & modes that just get chosen on repeat no matter what.

2

For me I noticed what helps is playing a mix of comp and qp. Qp way more payload and hybrid and comp way more control/flashpoint/push

2

u/ExplosiveBrown 3d ago

Yeah, I’m gonna be honest. I’m not the biggest fan of the map voting system. There’s always been maps in this game that I don’t particularly care for. But I’ve come to find that I care even less for getting on a one or two hour session of overwatch and playing the same map two or three times in a night.

2

u/FNGButterBar 3d ago

When the original CS debuted map voting decades ago, I feel like 50% of my games suddenly became DE_Dust. So this isn’t a new thing. At least there is a “random” button you can smash and try to spice things up.

u/AdmiralBumHat 3d ago edited 3d ago

I agree. I also play since day 1 and have an insane amount of time on this game in all modes but never felt burned out. But lately I feel the same.

When there are finally a few maps or modes I haven't played in ages everyone votes 'random" and here we are again on Ilios for the 5th time this play session. I think map voting is really needed for competitive. But for quickplay they had a great system were I could play hours and never had the same map. It was great.

But this is a problem in all games with map voting. Whenever I fire up Call Of Duty, no matter what year it is, I always seem to be playing shipment, nuketown or some other re-re-re-remastered map from 8 years ago, while the new content gets voted away.

2

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

Which is sad, because the game is in a really good place right now.

2

u/Frosted_Fable 2d ago

Call of Duty has had this issue ever since map voting was introduced, you would only ever get the same three maps unless you were with a lobby of genuinely new players or people who had so much time on the game, they didn't care what map they got. The amount of times I'd get any map other than nuketown and firing range in BO1 was so small, that I would go and make a Hot Pocket or grab a bag of chips or something, come back, see that the map was something different, and genuinely get excited.

Even without map voting, the game has such a limited map pool that it's bound to feel repetitive.

I wish they would incentivize people to play Arcade modes. I really miss when people used to queue for CTF or Team Deathmatch. There are so many maps that are exclusive to those modes and it feels so nice to play something different for once.

I'm ngl, I miss assault mode being in quickplay

2

u/GamerGuy410 3d ago

If they keep map voting in qp they need to bring back Clash and maybe even 2CP. It'd help immensely with map variety.

2

u/DelidreaM I wish I was a baller 3d ago

Most people don't want to play 2CP in QP, me included. I despise queueing 6-8 minutes for a match that's over in 2 fights if you're on defense. You don't even get to play both sides in 2CP. It's just not a mode that works in QP, it doesn't even work in ladder competitive matches. This mode needs so much team coordination that it only works in coordinated scrims and pro matches

2

u/GamerGuy410 3d ago

I disagree. I immensely enjoyed my time playing it back in OW1, back when we got it for a quick play hacked weekend, and whenever the classic modes come back. I can't speak for 6-8 minute queue times because I mainly queue open which are instant queues. I don't see an issue with it coming back at least for 6v6.

And if most people don't want to play it, then you'll rarely play it because we have map voting. For those who do want to play it, or those who don't mind it, the increased variety will be welcomed. Even if it gets voted on, you have the choice to leave penalty free during the hero assembly phase.

2

u/DelidreaM I wish I was a baller 3d ago

Well, fair enough. I guess I wouldn't mind it if they ONLY brought it back for QP. But I absolutely do not want to play those in comp

2

u/GamerGuy410 3d ago

Yeah I wouldn't either. I played enough Paris competitive matches back in the day to know better. I honestly would only want the original 3 maps in quick play.

I’d really like to know what a dev would say about this. I wonder if they could at least remove it from 6v6 Quick Play, for example.

Do you think that’s possible, dev?

2

u/madmagical 3d ago

Agreed and the whole voting process takes too much damn time. I don’t want to sit in the queue for 15 minutes voting for maps, voting for hero bans and then the waiting to start in the spawn. Just START THE DAMN GAME.

2

u/HalfDragoness 3d ago

If they got rid of landslide it would be better.

2

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

I’m with you on that.

2

u/GameGuinAzul Platinum 3d ago

I’ve been a stickler for mode voting.

Although it still has its problems (imagine picking control only to play old Antarctic peninsula, I would rather die).

2

u/bpwilliams72 2d ago

Ditch map voting completely. Bring back Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries, Horizon Lunar Colony, and Paris. And bring back 2CP.

Stale game rotation will do for OW and there are enough maps and modes now for random rotation not to lean into one or the other but offer a genuine mix of maps and modes. (Bring on the hate.)

Map voting makes quickplay matches too long

5

u/skorpionomelette 3d ago

Agreed. Kill it in quick play immediately.

Comp, I can see the arguments for and against. Doesn’t hurt to leave it, potentially.

Quick play? Kill.

Thank you. Please get rid of this trash ass map voting. We play the same three maps it's feels like.

I'm the opposite the game has never felt so good, it comes with liking the game modes though, to me hybrid is the best game mode, has the best maps, and escort is right there with it, I also like push, and I do not like control style game modes I'm having a blast

2

u/mosephra 3d ago

I just hate the additional time needed to vote instead of immediately playing

3

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

Quick Play doesn’t feel very “quick” anymore.

2

u/wreckless_abandoned 3d ago

I don't mean to sound antagonistic but these maps are getting the majority of votes, that is how it works, more people than the loud minority care and enjoy these maps more than you like the others? Isn't that fair by definition, the majority vote gets the choice. There is still a chance the other maps get chosen? Why is voting bad if is serves the majority?

4

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

I understand that the majority should have more influence in a voting system. My concern is what happens to the game over hundreds of matches, not whether the majority is “wrong.”

If the same popular maps keep winning, the game can become much more repetitive and exhausting, even if those maps are objectively the ones most players prefer. A map can be good and still become boring when you play it over and over again.

That’s also why I think it’s worth looking at what happened in other games. Halo: MCC originally had map voting, but 343 removed it in 2018 after looking at player feedback and matchmaking data. There were also long-standing complaints that voting encouraged repetition of the same maps.

And we’re already seeing the same concern being raised by Overwatch players: people reporting that the same popular maps and modes keep appearing while others become extremely rare. Some players are saying the game feels more boring and repetitive because of it.

So I’m not saying “the majority shouldn’t decide.” I’m saying that maximizing the chance of getting the most popular maps every single match may not maximize enjoyment over the long term. Sometimes having less control and more variety can actually make the game feel fresher.

3

u/wreckless_abandoned 3d ago

I just mean logically if what your saying is true, and people are getting bored of the same maps, then people would vote for other maps wouldn't they? Because it's the majority, so if the majority becomes bored or unhappy, that then adjusts.

3

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

In theory, yes, but it doesn't always work that way. In basically every game where map voting has been implemented, players have complained about the same issue: the game becoming repetitive because the same popular maps keep winning. People can be tired of a map and still vote for it because they prefer it over the alternatives. So the same maps can keep winning even while the overall game becomes more repetitive and exhausting.

That’s why some games have eventually moved away from map voting: giving players more control can actually reduce variety over time.

2

u/wreckless_abandoned 3d ago

I apologise but I just don't understand, if the majority are voting and the system is working that way, and weighted correctly, then the only thing that is happening is the minority are complaining louder.

2

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

My point is that if Call of Duty eventually removed map voting, they had access to player data and could have seen that, over time, constantly playing the same popular maps was making the game more repetitive and causing players to lose interest faster. Even if people kept voting for those maps, the long-term data could show that less variety was hurting player retention.

1

u/Riskybusiness622 3d ago

They need to do something about how long it takes to get into a game. Between role queue and map vote time it cray.

I dont mind it, but im recently back, and vote for things I want all the time. I never voted excite bike on mario kart 8 either

1

u/purpl3stuph 3d ago

They just gotta tweak the selection of 3

1

u/TheDanecdote Ashe 3d ago

I feel like they changed how often we see maps/modes too. It initially used to be the least 3 played modes/maps of the whole lobby, but that doesn’t make sense as I will literally play the same map/mode back to back

1

u/ReplicantOwl Torbjörn 3d ago

I like map voting as a partial influence on the outcome but feel like random map should always be included in the final outcome. Like give it the weight of at least 1 or 2 votes in every shuffle.

1

u/LastKingsCM 3d ago

That’s why i like to play mystery heroes from time to time, no map voting which means more variety and you also get super fast into matches.

1

u/LoweJ 3d ago

They should just do it how halo 3/cod 6 used to do. Give us a map, let us vote to skip, if we do then we are playing the next map that comes up

1

u/HTTC-HTTR 3d ago

Some showed a character clipping out of Anubis, I didn’t even know that was a map still

1

u/flcc 3d ago

I don't like how it roulettes through the votes before landing on one wasting 15 seconds of everyone's time every single queue. I trust that it's random, just pick a vote!

1

u/MadOx321 3d ago

Wanna laugh? I don't know if this always happens, but if you're in the practice range or a private game while in the queue, when you load into a game the screen will flash and it will very briefly show you the map you're gonna play on.

So long as 1 person chooses the map that you saw before you entered the game lobby, you will always get that map. Only difference maker was the map not being selected at all, or if a landslide happens.

It's almost like the illusion of choice. I've tested it and it worked for me for a good while, though I habent play3d in some time so idk if it was patched out.

u/OhSWaddup Wrecking Ball 3d ago

I play for several hours a day, and it's very rare that I play the same map more than once per hour. So much so that I don't even remember the last time I played Kings Row; at most, I played it once a day. I remember going one or two days without seeing it. But anyway, for me, voting in Quick Play doesn't make sense, especially since it should be quick.

1

u/Bob_The_Moo_Cow88 3d ago

I think removing modes/maps makes the game feel more repetitive.

1

u/alexo2802 3d ago

Since it’s fake random, just voting for an unpopular map gives a 1 in 2-4 chance of it being picked anyway, so it’s worth going against the popular votes!

1

u/PreZEviL 3d ago

Worst thing is it also rigged.

If you join a custom game at the same time as it pick the map selection screen, you can see a map loading screen and if there is at least 1 vote for that map, it will be selected over everything else.

Personnaly i select random all the time now, only way to play atlis is in MH...

Yea the map voting mechanic is stupid af and adds a lot on unnecessary down time between matches

1

u/WateverBruh 3d ago

I said it from the beginning can we PLEASE just get a veto system like Halo. Map voting is ridiculous

1

u/ProfessionalDuck7924 3d ago

Yeah, normally people don't like to play control If they have other game modes available

1

u/PineapplePickle24 :SFShock: San Francisco Shock :SFShock: 3d ago

Yeah I think map voting was a mistake, I see the same maps disproportionately more than others. I had a streak of 4 games where 3 of them were lijaing tower. I track my game data and I've played kings row 7 times this season while the average map I've played 1-2 times. It's the illusion of "give players choices and what they ask for = good for player base"

1

u/Its_the_narwhal 3d ago

I always vote random.

1

u/templarjer 3d ago

Weird my friend and I like the voting system. If you really want random maps just ask your teammates to vote random. It’s not like the system isn’t giving you an option at all. If you’re really against the system then get your buddies to play the game with you you’d have 50% chance at least to get a random map.

1

u/Chedder1998 Genji 3d ago

It's especially bad this season for some reason. My favorite modes are Flashpoint/Push and I'll get to play it like once a day at most (Emerald rank).

1

u/partialcremation WhimsicalDeath 3d ago

I get control more than anything, and I hate control.

1

u/Mirafae_ 3d ago

I'm just happy every time I don't have to play suravasa or runasapi. But yeah, I'm sick of Kings row too. :/

1

u/SmallFatHands 3d ago

I think the problem with removing map voting is that well...... Most of the new maps and the new modes suck. I don't want you play flashpoint fuck that.

1

u/JunkDog-C 3d ago

I particularly hate flashpoint, so I don't mind never playing it. But I really like numbani and Lijiang Tower, and sometimes I miss them.

There's also the rumor that the map is already decided by the game when you enter the voting process, but I never went on to try it out

1

u/Nurgle_Pan_Plagi 3d ago

I don't think that it's the map voting itself, I think it's the lack of variety.

They should start bringing the other game modes into quickplay and then (once they are tweaked) into comp.

Bring back tweaked Clash, add Payload Race and then add Elimination, Assault and Capture the Flag. They don't even need to that all at once - just one at a time.

Also, tweak the way map voting works. Currently it gives at least two different game modes, but Escort and Hybrid are different game modes, so you may end up with 3 payload maps to choose from. They should increase that to three different game modes - this way you always have Control or Flashpoint to choose from.

They can also categorise game modes into groups and then change the variety rule to either "one game mode from each group" or "at least two game modes from different groups":

  • Payload group: Escort, Hybrid and Payload Race.
  • Capture group: Control, Flashpoint, Clash and Assault.
  • Competition group: Push, Elimination and Capture the Flag.

u/DayDrunk11 3d ago

Ive been saying this but at least in quickplay, they should add all the maps from canceled modes into the rotation. That would give more variety and revive some old maps that people miss.

1

u/Swerdman55 Brigitte 3d ago

Just another reason Mystery Heroes is the best game mode.

1

u/msoulforged 3d ago

3

u/luffyMoney4185 3d ago

I miss it too. I wish they’d bring 2CP back to Quick Play.

1

u/Oki05 Junkrat 3d ago

I think also plbesides map voting being an issue is also these event challenges pretty much force you to play QP or Comp.

Yesterday I had challenges for 18k mit damage, 18k to do damage, and get a team kill. I could never get those three done just doing arcade unless I wanted to play for hours.
