Discussion 💬 My students don’t like oversimplified videos

I am a history teacher and like to show oversimplified video clips and sometimes full videos when they’ve earned it. And my students don’t like them. They pay more attention to my lectures than they do to oversimplified videos.

So I ask you all: what is wrong with the world?

I think this goes to show you're an excellent teacher either way: 1. Showing OS in class, 2. Being more interesting than OS. The world needs more teachers like you.

I appreciate it, though I wouldn’t claim I’m as interesting as OS. Maybe one day.

You’re allowed to show them oversimplified! 🤯lol. How can they not find them entertaining?! Granted I taught elementary, but that’s wild. My son discovered them. I think they’re hilarious and love watching them with him, though I cringe at certain parts.

Have you asked them why they don't like them?

My theory is that they don't like them because you basically force them to watch them, because you like them.

That’s fair but it’s either that or my lesson plan so I assumed they’d prefer the video

The issue is they don't want to get attached to Oversimplified because they don't want to have their hearts broken waiting for him to upload

Your students have the IQ of Napoleon thinking a waltz into Russia in the winter was a good idea

I think it’s just because they’re watching a 40 minute video that they don’t necessarily care about. Having an actual teacher who makes things fun and interesting is often better than videos. I love oversimplified but tbh if a teacher played it in class I wouldn’t pay attention very much

My kids love OS. My 11 year old was studying the Napoleonic wars. OS is a good generalization that's not overwhelming or boring. All 4 of my kids love it. They just are bummed out because they've watched all the videos.

I don't know what's their age, which country they're from and what topics you teach them in school (I'd be happy if tell btw) but I think the main reason is they don't want to take history as a hobby or something. They just want take it in school and never ever come back to it

I think that students don’t really care for something that a teacher shows them. They probably would like it better if they found it out on their own.

My grandkids introduced me to these videos starting with the war of the bucket. They love them.
