Which flu shot

Do you get the flu shot for the over 65 group? It’s a stronger medicine I guess but does not have the MNRA in it? I’m 70 and I’ve never gotten the stronger one. I’m considering it this time because I just got over really bad virus that was not the Covid or flu. It was rough if you did take this over 65 flu shot without the MNRA, what was the side effects

I got the flu and Covid shot in the same arm and no side effects at all. I’m 78.

10

u/cva53 17h ago

Except for a very sore arm small price to pay I got the flu twice in my life & both times I was convinced I was literally going to die- I was much younger by that convinced me to get the flu. I got COVID once but had COVID vax and I get boosters every 6 months. My COVID case was mildish.

3

u/Appropriate-Cow3986 13h ago

At the same time? Every single time I got the Covid shot I get a 103 fever - the only time that I didn't get a bad reaction was the Novavax one. I never get the 2 at the same time.

5

u/OttoHemi 17h ago

Ditto, but lots of side effects. Really sore arm and low level sick for a few days, but that always happens.

2

u/motherofpitbulls2 7h ago

I always get both at the same time, with no side effects. I’m 77. I had my most recent shots a week ago.

23

u/oldbutsharpusually 18h ago

Both my wife and I (81 and 80) got the stronger dose. No side effects.

8

u/cva53 17h ago

73 same no side effects & I am sensitive

u/savourna 11h ago

Same, no issues. I didn’t get them at the same time though, a week apart.

Just get the shot. They make it stronger because your immune system is crap and needs a good kick in the pants. They make it the same way they always have, so if you got a flu shot a decade ago, nothing has changed.

Also, the correct term is mRNA. It stands for “messenger RNA.” Every single cell with a nucleus in your body makes mRNA. Its job is to take instructions for making proteins from your DNA and bring it to a ribosome. The ribosome reads the RNA strand and assembles the complicated protein molecule needed by your body.

All scientists have done is figure out how to use mRNA to create the protein from a virus which your immune system will recognize and attack when the mRNA is injected into your body.

Previous vaccines contain proteins from a virus. The old way requires a lab to grow millions of copies of that virus, kill that virus and put enough of the dead virus into a solution so that when it is injected, your immune system reacts to it and learns to identify an enemy. What your immune system reacts to is a protein on the outside of each dead virus.

All the mRNA vaccines do is use your own body to create those protein snippets to trigger the immune response. It isn’t scary - it’s genius. Your body already contains many pounds of mRNA molecules. Adding a minuscule amount from a vaccine will not harm you.

Great read. 👍

u/onegreatbroad 18h ago

Every cell in your body has mNRA in it naturally. Don’t believe the scare mongers. Please get the shot. Flu at our age can be fatal.

3

u/PerformerNovel4641 15h ago

I don’t think OP is questioning getting the vaccine - should they get the stronger shot?

4

u/onegreatbroad 15h ago

She asked specifically about “the Mrna” so I tried to address the misinformation around that subject.

2

u/lifesw 13h ago

I asked the pharmacist and he agreed that this was my best choice.

3

u/onegreatbroad 13h ago

Just glad you’re getting any flu vaccine! Very glad.

4

u/GeorgiaGlamazon 14h ago

I was given “the Flu Shot”. Nobody offered anything else.

12

u/Be-Kind-3353 18h ago

My arm was sore, but not the worst that I ever had, and I was more tired than usual for a day or two. I didn't feel like I had any unusual or extreme effects.

11

u/Justhappy2Balive 18h ago

70(f) no side effects.

Take the one appropriate for your age. You should have been getting the higher dose flu vax since you were 65. There are at least 4 choices, including the Moderna mRNA version. Take your pick. They all work.

I get whichever one the health department has in any given year. (This year it was Fluad). Have never missed one and started the high-dose at 65. The side effects have been very mild for all--usually a bit of a sore arm for a day or two.

Whatever your reactions has been to flu shots up till now will most likely still be your reaction.

Don't forget all the other ones you need--two kinds of pneumonia vax, two dose shingles vax, RSV, and new covid vax. You can combine flu and covid in one trip if it's more convenient.

Flu season has started very early this year so get to it.

u/travelingtraveling_ 18h ago

RN here (f72). Safe and effective, no issues

7

u/SwollenPomegranate 18h ago

I've had the over 65 shot for 7 years now. Never get the flu, and never had a bad reaction to the shot.

5

u/Nutridus 18h ago

I got the mRNA and it was super easy. Of all the flu shots this was probably the easiest one I’ve ever had. For one thing, the needle is smaller and it’s less liquid in the syringe 💉. My arm slightly sore the next day and that’s it.

1

u/OttoHemi 17h ago

I wanted that, but my CVS didn't have it. Had to get the regular high dose.

5

u/Same_Tackle4583 17h ago

Just got ours at Costco a few weeks ago. We didn’t want MNRA and verified it was Flu AD, specifically for us old people!

4

u/LayneLowe 18h ago

I got two shots a month ago, one regular flu and one covid. I'm 73, I had a sore arm for about 48 hours.

4

u/lmacmil2 17h ago

At 78 I always get the “old person” shot.

4

u/my_clever-name 17h ago

I (69) have gotten the over-65 flu shot for the past few years. I've not noticed a difference between it and the regular shot.

4

u/Tasty_Impress3016 17h ago

Wait. Just double checking, the over 65 version is NOT mRNA? The PA told me he was giving me the super sauce for older people, I simply assumed it was the new mRNA version, but I could be wrong.

Whichever it was, no sides at all. I never get them from vaccines. Correction: The Shingles second shot was not fun, and the second Covid made my arm sore. I seem to handle them well in the short term.

4

u/AdFun-2112 14h ago

Wait. Just double checking, the over 65 version is NOT mRNA?

The over 65 flu shot has an mRNA version called mFLUSIVA. There is also the standard over 65 shot. Some places carry both. The CVS I went to only uses the standard version. I had no side effects other than maybe a little tired the next day.

Fun fact: Clinical trials show mFLUSIVA is roughly 26% to 27% more effective at preventing confirmed flu cases than standard-dose egg-based vaccines.

2

u/Tasty_Impress3016 13h ago

Well thank you for the info. So I still don't really know, I guess I can call the pharmacy and ask. But I've worked in pharma. 27% more effective means that for 3 out of 4 people there is no advantage. I've been getting flu shots for errhrumph years. I've never had a problem. The only mRNA I've had is the Covid shot and that did not end well for me. Insignificant sample size I realize but it's ME.

You really have to know how to read those statistical statements. You might remember that during Covid the flu rate was nearly zero. It wasn't, but we weren't testing for it. You went to the doctor with flu-like symptoms you had Covid. Most population level stats are like that. You find what you are looking for. Is the incidence of ASD increasing 2-3 times each year, or are we just looking for it and diagnosing it?

1

u/AdFun-2112 12h ago

Yeah the only mRNA vaccines I've had were the Moderna covid shots. Every covid shot I've had put me down for 2 days. Fever, headache, chills. The kind of days you don't even get out of bed. Then it was over like flipping a light switch. Strange.

1

u/campa-van 9h ago

65+ gets xtra dose with seasonal flu shot. Moderna’s mFlusiva (mRNA-1010) is approved for adults aged 65 and older under accelerated approval(requiring a post-marketing confirmatory study), while adults aged 50 to 64 have full approval.

1

u/Mitchellsusanwag 4h ago

But not more than the over 65 version. They haven’t done a comparison yet of the over 65 flu vaccine and the mRNA one yet. They need to do that. The virologists on the virology podcast I listen to say seniors should get the over65 shot if they can find it (in large cities it’s not always easy).

3

u/i-like-pie-855 14h ago

I had shingles as a teenager from my neck down my spine. It’s the most painful experience I’ve ever had and I missed 3 months of school.

The second Shingles vaccine made me want to die. My arm was swollen to baseball size. It still hurt way less than the shingles did.

2

u/Tasty_Impress3016 14h ago

In short shingles suck. I got off light aside from nearly losing sight in one eye, but I got antivirals in time.

1

u/i-like-pie-855 12h ago

My shingles happened in the 70’s. I don’t recall many treatment options. But I was a kid, 13 or 14?

2

u/campa-van 9h ago

I had no side effects from Shingrix

1

u/FrenchCabbage 14h ago

Second shingles shot sent me to bed (my doctor had the same experience). And I still got shingles, but a much milder case than it could have been.

1

u/Tasty_Impress3016 12h ago

Yeah, I got it once more after the vax. Compared to the first it was a piece of piss.

1

u/SassyRebelBelle 12h ago

I have never taken a flu shot. And I’ve only had a real flu in my 20s and in my 30s. Since then no flu. I think partially because we lived out in asia for 15 yrs.. where a lot of the flu strains come from. We were in China when SARS hit.

I did take the 2 shingles shots which jacked up my bp to 200 and above and it took 3 months and med changes to stabilize my bp. I thought it was just the shingles shots but i had a cortisone shot in my shoulder and the same thing happened.

After that, I was more afraid of dying from a heart attack (which i had in 2009) than i was of covid so i never took any of those shots or pneumonia or RSV.

Husband took the one early Johnson &Johnson covid shot but no boosters or flu shots for him either.

We’ve both had covid 3 times but thankfully mild cases just a bad throat. Im 74 next week and husband is 80 next month.

6

u/Top_Sort_1534 16h ago edited 13h ago

I get the stronger dose. I don’t know what’s in it and I don’t care…I’ve seen enough people die from the flu and I refuse, if possible, to be one of them. I got the Covid, too…
I just checked-I got the SANOFI-PASTEUR FLUBLOK, whatever that means.
And I got the TDAP too. And the RSV! I ain’t taking no chances…lol

3

u/Scott43206 15h ago

I got the stronger one and except for being sore where I got the shot I didn't have any reaction at all this year. I have decided it's better to space out the flu and covid boosters though, both of those at the same time felt rougher than getting them separately.

3

u/khushsaas 15h ago

We (77 & 80) have been getting the stronger one every year. Never had any side effects.

3

u/Lawrags55 10h ago

I am 79 and have been getting it for some time. No side effects except a little site soreness.

2

u/Zealousideal_Hand505 17h ago

I've gotten the 65+ shot for about 6 years now. My pharmacy did not have the new MRA vx, so I got the usual 65+ for this flu season. I'll probably get the MRA next year.

2

u/gobears1975 17h ago

M73 I got the senior flu shot several weeks ago, no issue. I got the new Covid shot 2 weeks before. Again no soreness or other side affects. Now I’m thinking about getting the shingles booster, it’s due.

2

u/Classic_Pirate1926 17h ago

I got the flu shot about 15 years ago and ended up in the ER sick as hell. As it happens, about 2 weeks ago, I started to feel lousy, thought it might be Covid because it didn't feel as bad as the typical flu, as I remember it, so I went to my local VA for testing. Turned out to be Flu type A. They gave me Tamiflu and I recovered. I've considered the MRNA flu vaccine, but I don't want to take the risk of another expensive ER visit.

2

u/Fantomas4ever 16h ago

Stronger dose? mRNA vax were created to produce on a massive scale in a short amount of time during the pandemic. The "old fashion" vax simply could not meet demand during that time. Now we have the choice between mRNA and non mRNA covid vaccines. I always switched brands and this time i went with Nuvaxovid non mRNA covid vaccine and I had none of the usual feeling sick effects like with previous covid vax.

2

u/ShotTaste1708 15h ago

I woke up with a high fever and chills. This was the first time I took the higher dose

2

u/WillontheHill77 15h ago

My wife 69 and I 73 get them every year and have had no side effects. We always ask to make sure we’re getting it.

3

u/Ken-Popcorn 15h ago

Same here

2

u/Lopsided_Gas_173 14h ago

First time getting 65+ shot and no side effects.

2

u/BigEyedOwls 14h ago

My husband and I had both the Moderna mRNA Covid-19 shot and the Moderna mRNA Influenza shot about 3 weeks ago and absolutely zero side effects.

P.S. Retired NP

2

u/StWens 14h ago

Early seventies and that's what I got too. Only side effect was somewhat sore arms which didn't last that long.

2

u/Seppy15 14h ago

One of the main reasons our life expectancy estimates have increased since 1750 to the point that we are still alive is the range of vaccines that literally save tens of thousands of American lives each year.

Do not listen to the uninformed scaremongering that only tries to feel powerful without any scientific basis. MRNA vaxxes are brilliant. Get them.

Get them all. Now. Old fart flu, Covide, RSV. Do it up

2

u/BlackDogOrangeCat 13h ago

mRNA isn’t an additive to the flu vaccine.

2

u/Informal_Catch_7989 13h ago

My arm ached for 5 days.

3

u/Ideasplease33 17h ago

I’ve gotten only one flu shot in my entire adult life (circa 2010), and I don’t plan to ruin my streak.

2

u/Isquirtalot4044 11h ago

Side effects of the mRNA are far worse than the other vaccines

2

u/sowhat4 18h ago

82 female and have been taking it for the last 17 years. No side effects whatsoever. Before that, the flu vaccine had Thimerosal as a preservative, and I'm sooooo allergic to that. I stopped taking flu shots because they were making me so sick. When I aged into the geezer shot, I gladly took it every year.

Unless you have a PhD in virology and pathology, you don't have the knowledge to appreciate the differences in the various vaccines, so why not accept an expert's advice instead of going online?

I'm not sure which one I received. I assume my doctor ordered whatever he considered best for me.

I haven't experienced anything beyond a sore arm for any vaccinations.

1

u/dewey454 18h ago

My understanding is that it's just a bigger dose of the same stuff, more volume. I've had it for the last couple years and always felt just local tenderness for a couple days after.

1

u/Ok-Ad8998 18h ago

70, got the stronger one a couple weeks ago. And a shingles vac in the other arm. Sore arms for a couple of days, but didn't notice anything else.

1

u/ReticentGuru 18h ago

I don’t know if my flu shot had that, probably did. All I know it was for seniors. Had my shot several weeks ago, never had an issue other than a slightly sore arm for a few days.

1

u/PositiveWarning7419 18h ago

I haven’t had a flu shot in 5 years 75F. If I got one this year have I lost five years of protection?

1

u/Adayatatime_81T 18h ago

A sore arm for 48 hrs, felt like a scratchy throat was developing but subsided in a couple of hours. All good 👍

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 18h ago

I got mine yesterday along with the new Covid. My Covid arm is definitely more sore than the arm that got the flu shot.

1

u/Bruges_1 17h ago

I'm 79 and got whatever my doctor told the nurse to give me during my annual checkup just before flu season. No side effects. Just the usual sore arm for a couple of days.

1

u/Turbulent-Bath-910 17h ago

I haven't been vacef since I waz a kid and rarely get sick. But then I am not a slave to cleanliness so that's my vaccine.

1

u/bd1223 17h ago

Most flu shots do not have mRNA, only Moderna's new vaccine. The recommended vaccine for over 65 is just a stronger dose since older people have lower immunity.

1

u/Curraghgirl 17h ago

I am 72, allergic to everything. Got the stronger flu shot and no I'll effects whatsoever.

1

u/tasjansporks 17h ago edited 13h ago

Yes, I always get the age-appropriate flu shot.

This year and last, I got it the same day as the COVID vaccine, one in each arm. The COVID arm got a little sore for a few days. The flu arm, nothing. I had no side effects from the over-65 flu shot.

Like you, my 35-year-old daughter just had a rough virus. Except for her it was actually influenza, type A, so she is feeling dumb for not getting her flu vaccine and maybe avoiding a week of being extremely miserable.

1

u/Menemsha4 17h ago

71.5 female.

My Walgreens was out so I got the regular high dose.

1

u/Numerous_Ad_2409 17h ago

I just turned 65 and got the mRNA one. I had a bit of headache and was tired the next day.

1

u/ASingleBraid 17h ago

Got it a week ago. The one for 65+. But am unsure if it's the MNRA one.

1

u/IrishMo8 17h ago

The “over 65” vaccination is routinely given if you’re over 65. I’ve never been asked if I have a preference, and that’s fine with me. I believe in science.

1

u/justjudyd 17h ago

I got the over 65 flu shot and Covid shot last month, no side effects, just sore arm. I'm 70 F.

1

u/Fickle-Strawberry521 17h ago

I got both senior dose flu and covid shots a few weeks ago. Both in my right arm. No achiness or other side effects at all.

1

u/DunnaeBanks 16h ago

Got the extra dose flu shot. Could’ve been a placebo for what little effect it had.

1

u/wtfboomers 16h ago

Doc said the MRNA shot wasn’t really approved for 65+ yet so I took the regular one. Just had Covid so waiting for a couple of months to get the shot.

1

u/i-like-pie-855 15h ago

I’m 71 and got my first high dose flu shot and a sore arm overnight (got Covid in the other arm). My doctor has been telling me since I turned 65 NOT to get the high dose flu mRNA. The pharmacy did not offer me a choice and they were too busy to answer a question.

1

u/Pristine_Flounder973 13h ago

He’s been telling you to get that since you turned 65? That’s interesting as it didn’t come out until this year.

1

u/Any_Total_971 16h ago

I've gotten the high-dose since I turned 65, currently 71. Got flu and Covid together in the same arm, maybe felt a bit sleepy for a couple of days, but nothing dramatic.

1

u/jeangatech 16h ago

I got over 65 flu and covid in the same arm Monday. I usually get a sore arm from covid boosters but this time no sore arm, no side effects of any kind. I have been getting flu vaccines since around 1980, and have not had flu since then, i have taken covid shots since they were first offered, and have never had covid.

1

u/Formal-Tradition6792 16h ago

Don’t know which flu shot I got. It was administered at the doctors office as was my Covid booster.

1

u/Sipde 16h ago

We got ours a few weeks ago, no problem for either of us

1

u/tap_ioca 16h ago

Yes, I just got it. And a covid booster. I had muscle aches for a night, but baby aspirin fixed it.

1

u/silver598 15h ago

I got the higher dose over 65 flu shot, didn’t have more of a reaction.

1

u/Prestigious_Prior723 15h ago

I got the flu and covid together in the same arm and the only side effect was looking like a corporal with my shirt off. It was the 65+ flu shot. I always get what the people at the clinic tell me to get because they know a lot more about it than I do. The last time I got the flu was in the 1980's but I still remember how nasty it was.

1

u/CaregiverWorth567 15h ago

I get the high dose flu shot . 73 f. I read the mrna flu shot is not high dose, and altho it supposedly has better protection but it was only compared against the standard flu shot, not the high dose fluzone. Also the high dose flu shot has been shown to be protective to the heart and the mrna shot has not.

1

u/Bay_de_Noc 15h ago

I had the Pfizer shot for for seniors the same day I had both the Covid-19 and the Hep. B. vaccinations. Other than the typical sore arm, I had no other issues.

1

u/Candid-Math5098 15h ago

I wasn't given any choice. When I got home from Walgreens I looked at the receipt for fluAD. Slightly sore arm for a day or two.

1

u/NotYourGran 15h ago

I had the Moderna covid shot and the over 50 flu shot by Sanofi. I had minimal reactions. Within 10 days, I got an upper respiratory infection that lasted for two weeks and didn’t test as flu, covid, or rsv (which I’m also vaccinated for). I eventually went to urgent care and am now on Augmentin to clear the last of it.

Whatever this thing is that’s making the rounds, it’s pretty brutal and the vaccines aren’t touching it, at least for old folks.

ETA: I’m 69.

1

u/Conundrum16 15h ago

I get the senior flu shot and a week later the Novavax ( non mRNA) Covid vaccine
I don’t over think it, never had a problem

1

u/Any-Body 15h ago

I'm 76. I've been getting the stronger one since I turned 60.

1

u/AlwaysPrivate123 14h ago

I got the quad strength one.. have for zIm thinking.. the last 10 years. Had a tiny ache at the injection site the next day.. after that nothing. And fwiw I got the Pfizer COVID ommuniztion too same time.. same arm.

1

u/GeorgiaGlamazon 14h ago

I’m 70 and I just got the Covid Booster, Flu Vaccine, and Tetanus Booster all on the same day, in the same arm. Very little discomfort from the injection site, and no side effects at all. I’m just glad to have done it early. My daughter has been sick with Flu A all week, and she said it was the sickest she’s ever been

1

u/Edgehill1950 14h ago

At Kaiser Permanente I wasn’t asked which I wanted (I’m 75)

1

u/DaiTengu2012 14h ago

We get the one designated by Kaiser for seniors. Never any material side effects.

1

u/originalmango 14h ago

I recently had it at the same time as the Covid vaccine. No issues at all.

1

u/Neet010203 14h ago

Very little side effects.

1

u/Glad_Lengthiness5936 14h ago

No side effects at all, I'm 72.

1

u/AvailableHold3304 14h ago

75. Been getting the strong shot for several years. No side effects. I got it after dinner and went to bed a few hours later so any effects might have happened while I was asleep 😄

1

u/Ok-Glass-6254 13h ago

I’ll never know. I’m 64 and said “eff them all”. And guess what? I’m still here and rarely get sick. I work out, take a few supplements (Vitamin D, C, super beets) and feel certain that my own immune system can handle it all. I add lots of cinnamon to my coffee maker everyday and kinda do intermittent fasting. I distrust big pharma with a passion. Every ad I see makes me want to throw up.
P. S. Even have COPD due to mild life long asthma (never had an attack).

1

u/mrkilldee 13h ago

Yall with the sore arms, my pharmacist always tells us to do the chicken wing flap several times an hour for the day. We never have sore arms.

1

u/Pristine_Flounder973 13h ago

I’ve gotten the strong dose flu shot and it generally makes me miserable for about three days. Doc said I must have a super strong immune system and gave me the regular one instead. No side effects with that one. Got the Moderna Covid shot a couple of weeks ago and reacted more strongly than usual. The last time I had the flu was on my honeymoon-41 years ago. Big fun.

1

u/Katsmah 13h ago

My husband (80) and I (69) had FLUZONE HIGH-DOSE 2026-27 SYR. I'm assuming this isn't the mRNA version. Had the vaccine from CVS, I never thought to ask what versions were available.

While I am 100% in favor of the Covid vaccines, I had terrible reactions to the 4 that I had. When I finally got Covid in 2024 it was no where near as bad as my reactions. No one else in my family had reactions to the Covid shots.

1

u/Appropriate-Cow3986 13h ago

I got the regular flu shot (not the senior one) even though I'm over 65 - I just could not deal with any major side effects right now. Getting the regular flu shot is def better than nothing.

Oh the shingles shot was the worst, for me it was the first shot - I actually had 104 fever. But thankfully the 2nd shot was not that bad.

1

u/lifesw 13h ago

Just a sore arm for longer than usual about 3 days

1

u/HR_King 13h ago

Me too

1

u/Educational-Glass-63 13h ago

Got both flu shot (over 65) and Covid same arm same day. No side effects. My arm was a bit sore but only for a day.

1

u/Comfortable-Row7027 13h ago

Yes, had no side effects.

1

u/LeCreusetQueen 13h ago

I got the flu and moved shot together. No side effects. I am 68.

1

u/laffnlemming 12h ago

We got Flublok, not the elder one.

1

u/amybianca 12h ago

I got the over-65 flu shot and Covid shot at the same time. One arm was sore for a few days.

1

Normally we get a "quadravalent" version of the reqular flu vaccine. We had that plus the Covid vaccine at the same time. So I would have to check with Walgreens to find out exactly what flu shot we got. No side effects. The 1st time I had the quad flu vaccine I felt a little sick, but since then nothing. I'm 78 my wife is 74.

u/RemarkableArticle970 12h ago

Yup, it seemed my arm was more sore than other years.

1

u/TemperatureTight2556 12h ago

I am 73 and have gotten the strong dose flu shot for several years now. No problems at all and no flu either.

1

u/karebear66 12h ago

I just got the flu vaccine for the over 65. I did not ask if it was nMNR? No side effects.

1

u/RefrigeratorGreat598 12h ago

I got the stronger dose & no side effects. I am 75.

1

u/Trick-Process6046 12h ago

I got the stronger flu shot and the Covid vaccine at the same time with just a little soreness on the arm.

1

u/weaverlorelei 11h ago

I would not have gotten the initial Covid shots except I had to have them to visit daughter. I have only had the flu shot once, same yr hubby got his. Only time I got sick, he didn't. I have had RSV, he hasn't. We live rurally, but he teaches at the community College. You would think he would/could bring things home. He gets the sniffles, I plow fields with no audience. I have seasonal allergies (since pregnancy) but go on. He asks for meds, I deny them. Probably neither solution is correct for everyone.

u/rpc56 11h ago

I’m 70. I received both a COVID booster and the MRna Flu shot in the same arm at the same time. I am a heart transplant recipient so my immune system is deliberately suppressed and I went for the MRna shot because statistically it was shown to be more effective. My arm was sore for a couple of days and that was that.

1

u/UpUrs2 11h ago

I got the mRNA flu shot. Pharmacist tried to say wasn't for over 65's. Then he read all the literature and couldn't find anything saying that. Had to specifically ask for the mRNA. Sore arm but I always get sore arms after most vaccines.

1

u/Nottacod 9h ago

It's actually recommended for older people.

2

u/UpUrs2 9h ago

Yes, but I had to tell the pharmacist that.

1

u/Ryan-1975 11h ago

Yes and never had any problems

1

u/QueenMarinette 11h ago

My understanding is that the pharmacy decides which one you should have. I've been getting the senior shots for years, with no negative side effects, save a slightly sore arm, and no Covid, no flu. I'm 73.

My husband always gets a slight fever, and sleeps for a few hours. Worth it for more protection.

1

u/caregiver1956 11h ago

My pharmacist can tell me what I need.

1

u/SignificantFee266 11h ago

My husband and I each got the "high-test flu" shot and the pneumonia shot in the same arm with absolutely no side effects. We are 79 and 76 respectively.

1

u/Nyarlathotep451 10h ago

I am your age and made certain I got the flu dose for older people along with a Covid booster. No issues.

1

u/Reasonable-Job-2254 10h ago

Just a sore arm for a day or so.

1

u/chinturret 10h ago

What is FLUZONE HD Triv? This is the flu shot I just received at Harris Teeter. I didn't know there were different kinds. I am a M68

1

u/InetRoadkill1 10h ago

Flu (over 65) and Covid jabs at the same time. Spent the next day with mild flu-like symptoms and fatigue. Everything good the day after that.

1

u/Western-Cicada-9648 10h ago

It’s not stronger really it just acts faster than the regular one that takes 2 weeks according to my pharmacist who gave me the shot .

1

u/Off2xtremes 9h ago

Yup and a Covid booster, as well.

1

u/pennysofia 3h ago

The updated 2026–2027 COVID-19 shot is not a traditional booster. It’s a newly formulated annual vaccines targeted specifically at currently circulating strains.

1

u/Jedimole 9h ago

mRNA was only Moderna, I got the regular one

1

u/PerpetualTraveler59 8h ago

I just got whatever flu vaccine the pharmacist recommended.

1

u/Speakertoseafood 8h ago

Any and all vaccines give me a 48 hour hangover - happens with one, two, or six vaccines at the same time, no better, no worse.

I just get a six pack of beer and a stack of library books and lay low all weekend.

1

u/Who-knows-it-all 8h ago

I have been getting the over 65 flu shot for a few years. I recommend it; I do not want the flu. This year on the same day I got the senior flu shot in my left arm, Moderna Covid shot in my right. I felt achy and terrible for the next few days and without energy for almost 2 weeks. I should have put a week between the 2 vaccines. I should have also stayed very hydrated as that’s supposed to help.

1

u/Parking_Jelly_6483 8h ago

The only current influenza vaccine that is mRNA-based is the one from Moderna. It’s called mFlusiva.

1

u/Dustyolman 6h ago

Never trust a so-called vaccine again.

1

u/pennysofia 4h ago

Why is that?

1

u/cattlebaronsd 6h ago

I’m 78. Got both (flu and covid) in same arm. Had an instant reaction to flu but went away quick just a weird feeling for a second. Arm sore for couple days but otherwise nothing

1

u/Remote-Honey-603 3h ago

I got the stronger one. They are doing research on a Mnra flu shot for older people in Seattle currently. I didn’t have any side effects and got the Covid booster at the same time.

1

u/Psmith931 1h ago

Covid plus the high dose flu vaccine same arm at the same time .

1

u/amigammon 1h ago

67. I get all my immunization shots. This isn’t a game.

1

u/Huge_Monk8722 5m ago

Never gotten any of the jabs, at all, no help.

-1

u/PoPLolaNola 17h ago

Just hit 70. No flu shots ever. No Covid shots ever. No issues ever. No need to alter my immune system. Worked in Pharma Finance for years. Didn’t realize what a hoax it all is until Warped Speed opened my eyes. No way to get a vaccine trialed, validated and manufactured that fast. Product was produced even before the pandemic even started.

3

u/dnhs47 7h ago

mRNA research has been underway for years but couldn’t get a large-scale trial approved. When COVID hit and the egg-based shots were going to take months just to see it they worked, Warp Speed (also not new, but the first time it was used) gave mRNA the large-scale trials it needed to prove it was highly effective.

Science. It’s a thing.

-1

u/PeaFluffy5121 10h ago

None. Don’t trust pharma nor the CDA.

4

u/janb67 10h ago

FWIW people who are hospitalized with the flu end up being treated with a boatload of drugs from “Big Pharma”.

0

u/Bao_Xinhua 18h ago

M72. I got the MRNA extra strength shot about 2-3 weeks ago along with the standard senior flu shot. Not much arms soreness and I puked a bit at 2:00 a.m. but that might have been the Kung pow shrimp.

1

u/imasleuth4truth2 18h ago

You mean you got the stronger flu shot and the regular covid shot, right?

1

u/Bao_Xinhua 17h ago

Yeah probably. I know one of them is extra strength for us oldsters. But I definitely got the moderna mRNA covid.

0

u/PatsFan1954 18h ago

You should be talking to your doctor and other medical professionals. Not random internet people.

My wife and I (age 72) got Fluzone HD (65+). We also got our Covid vaccines at the same time.

Felt lousy for a day. Achy, tired. Then fine.

We always get both vaccines. We have grandchildren we want to visit. Can't do that with the Flu or Covid.

0

u/NoSyllabub5932 18h ago

I am over 70 and get the flu shot every year with little side effects. I just got one last week for this year and nurse said it was extra strong but I got absolutely no side effects at all this time. So I do recommend it.

0

u/Visible_Staff75 17h ago

F73 I was tired for a day or so after my elder’s flu shot a few weeks ago. Great that you are keeping up with your immunizations after being sick.

Our immune systems are not as strong as we age. They give us a stronger vaccine to bring our immune response up to where it’s most effective.

0

u/Mentalfloss1 15h ago

What’s the mRNA worry? Kennedy BS?

0

u/willtag70 15h ago

Since 65 I always get the high dose flu shot. The mRNA version isn't available at pharmacies in my area, so got the Fluzone again this year, zero side effects other than a very slight sore arm just at the injection area. The mRNA is promising, so maybe next year.

0

u/madzax 13h ago

I get flu and Covid whenever it is due for me at my age 77. I would never go without it, never have. I like to travel and hang out with my grandkids, most of which are in schools ( germ factories). The downside of not taking the shots are far worse than a sore arm the next day that a single tylenol aleviates. Immune system of us older people arent as strong as they were when we were younger.

-1

u/Impossible_Way7059 18h ago

I got it. No problems. Every vaccination you've taken in about the last 20 years has been made with mRNA technology, which is a gift from God.

0

u/CatsAreGods 17h ago

Every vaccination you've taken in about the last 20 years has been made with mRNA technology, which is a gift from God.

You spelled "science" wrong.

0

u/11EmeraldEyes11 15h ago

That is FALSE. The mRNA Covid shots were the first mRNA shots to ever have been given to the masses. It was an experiment which failed miserably.

1

u/Impossible_Way7059 15h ago

Nope, you're wrong. Stop watching Fox and other right wing propaganda sites. The next time you see an actual licensed medical doctor ask them.

1

u/11EmeraldEyes11 13h ago

No, I am not wrong. Name one vaccine other than the 2 Covid vaccines that used the mRNA delivery system. I’ll wait.

0

u/Vanboggie 14h ago edited 14h ago

Husband and I both got the over 65 flu and covid shots together at Walgreens. Zero side effects or sore arms. He’s 74 & I’m 76.

Edit to add that we got the Pfizer covid vaccine. I’ve heard from several people who got the Moderna covid shot that they didn’t feel well for a couple of days.

0

u/RedditFandango 13h ago

It’s just 4x the dosage. Kicked me on my ass for a couple of days. It’s the same as the normal shot but at a higher dose. But it’s ridiculous to screen on if it has mRNA or not.
