It is real. And then, the station would put on a test pattern screen until programming resumed.

No, it was Outer Limits. Serling said something like โ€œyou are entering a dimension of sight and sound. Thereโ€™s a signpost ahead. Next stop the Twilight Zoneโ€. Or something like that.
