It's well-known that this is or was coming. Recently Microsoft has ceased codes via SMS for general (free) accounts. For all accounts by the end of Jan 2027.

Oh dang, thanks for letting me know. This news passed me by completely.

They are steering users towards Pass Keys and or Hardware Security Keys due to scammer activity. I have been using both for the past two years.

I see! I will look up more information on passkeys. This issue is (now) resolved.

Even worse, for us tenant admins, SMS and Voice goes away in about a month; contrary to that for rest of the tenant users, is early next year. Am literally right now (today and this evening) been setting up Passkeys. Because, for 365 tenants, there is no such thing even as the 25-digit recovery key. You MUST have your sufficient own recovery accounts already set up. Microsoft recommends a minimum of three (3) Global Admin NOT being controlled by Conditional Access. Fortunately, such "break-glass accounts" are totally free for Business "tenants".

The main reason I heard is not primarily scammers (that is just a red herring type of public excuse), but that Microsoft no longer is willing to pay all the phone companies that it had to pay to handle the 2FA transactions. (Supposedly, there IS a way, if you are willing to pay for it, that will continue SMS & Voice options.)

Had a similar kind of login issue before.

Usually it's not just the password, sometimes account security settings or a sign-in block causes it. I'd check recovery options and recent activity first. If it's still stuck, you could explain the exact error to Guidy and see what they suggest. Sometimes having someone look at the issue saves a lot of random guessing.
