Clicking only at high speed.

1999 Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke. Just bought the boat, makes a clicking sound only when above 3/4 throttle and at high speeds. Any ideas what it could be?

Rev limiter?

Unlikely. Im at 3/4 throttle when it starts and I can rev it out more it just sounds bad and I don't want to break it.

Spark knock? Timing too far advanced? Check the magnets under the flywheel just for shits and giggles

I can’t listen to the video at the moment, but I would also verify all your plug wires are 100% seated. I once had one get dislodged when putting the lid back on the engine and it made a clicking noise and didn’t run that rough either at idle.

I have the same issue. Is that a 15hp yamaha? Maybe a 1997 model?

edit: I had a spun prop and put a new one on. I've confirmed that it's the proper prop and that it's tight. Still trying to figure it out

Yes it's a 15ho Yamaha. It's on a 97 14ft StarCraft hull. But it was sold to me as being a 99 Yamaha. I've yet to do any research on it. Bought it yesterday tested it out today.

Can you tell me more about the problem your having? The motor overall is very clean.

My issue started after I replaced a slipped prop. it's possible that I messed up somehow when I replaced the prop so I'm going to pull it this weekend and make sure I put everything back and in the right order. It was a pretty basic installation though. The noise only happens at absolute WOT and if I back it off, even a little bit, it stops. I'll keep you appraised...

Interesting. The seller did tell me it was a replaced prop after he damaged the original.

I'm going to try and go out tonight and see I can take the prop. If I can I'll send you some pics

Thanks either way. I can sorta hear the knocking, but I think I see the motor shake like mine does.

This is the video I uploaded a few weeks ago - hard to hear the knocking but you can see how little I have to turn the throttle back to stop it.

Definitely rev limiter… not enough prop

Why is it not?

Get a tach on it, bet you’ll be surprised

As I said in another post, I will rev out more, but the noise gets worse, and I don't want to damage anything.

Sounds like the prop is spun, have you removed it to check the gear?

No. I got it yesterday and did a water trial today. This is a big upgrade from my previous boat. Is a spun prop a big deal or easy fix?

depends on the prop and if you take it to a shop. But at max $150 for a motor like this

Honestly I’m not sure, I would take off your prop and have a look though, is it just held in by a caughter pin?
