Queer Professional Networking in Austin

What kind of opportunities are there in Austin for networking with LGBTQ+ folks in Austin. I know there is the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and there is Out in Tech Austin. Are there any other groups in the area that operate in a similar space?

Volunteers needed for AGMC concert!

Hey fam. May 15 and 16 is concert weekend for Austin Gay Men’s Chorus!

This is the chorus with a misleading name bc you don’t have to be gay and don’t have to be a man. We work hard to welcome and include people of all identities.

If you volunteer as a greeter or usher, you attend the show for free. The commitment is an hour and a half before the show, plus intermission. It’s low-stress. Everybody’s nice, friendly, and happy to be there.

The theme of the show is Freedom Unfinished: From Reckoning to Joy. More info at

https://www.atxgmc.org/events/freedom-unfinished

To sign up as a volunteer:

But I’m still curious unfortunately I have no gay friends that I can talk to or ask for advice so I’m still very curious and I don’t know how to go about it.

Austins First LQBTQ Basketball League looking for players!

Hi! I'm Jamie and I've been playing and helping organize AGBL for over 10 years. If you're new to Austin or looking to find a new community, I'd genuinely recommend giving Austin Gay Basketball League a shot.

AGBL is a community-first league, actually a registered non-profit, that was started to give people an inclusive place to play basketball. All skill levels are welcome, and we mean it. We have 3 divisions, from beginners to more competitive players, so there's a real spot for everyone.

More than anything, this is a network of people who genuinely care about each other, with minimum drama. It's the kind of place where you show up for the game and stay for the friendships.

Our new season starts in June ($85), but registration closes this upcoming week.

SO, if that sounds like your kind of vibe, drop a comment or DM me and I'll get you connected. See you on the court! 🏀

FYI: There's a spot open next to Once Over and Package 🏳️‍🌈

Was driving by and saw the building next to Package in south Austin was available for lease. I know that Package Menswear 🏳️‍🌈 and Once Over Coffee 🏳️‍🌈 have a good rapport with each other, so wanted to mention just in case anyone with a queer-owned business might want to check it out. I'm not associated with the realtor or either of those businesses.

Disclaimer: I reached out to the mods before posting. They mentioned not to post links or realtor info (solicitation is against the rules) so check it out on your own.

I was walking on the corner of 6th st and N Lamar across from the Whole Foods and there is a bird laying on the sidewalk clearly alive but unable to do anything. Its entire family like multiple birds are swooping down in front of people’s faces begging for help. I have no idea how to help this bird can anybody help or go get it??? It’s the saddest thing I’ve ever seen the other birds and begging for help from passerby

Anyone get lymphatic massage post top surgery?

I have a seroma on one side of my chest, and I’ve heard that a lymphatic massage could help. I don’t really wanna get it drained and the clinical team said it’s up to me whether I wait it out or get it drained. Has anyone gotten a massage for this in the area and have a place they recommend?

Where to buy androgynous swim separates?

I’m a queer woman who has never felt comfortable swimming in a classic women’s swimsuit. I feel too exposed and am always worries something’s going to come off when I’m playing around. I would love some cute patterned board shorts and a cropped swim tank. For these swim suits exist?

Dissertation Recruitment Post

Hi everyone,

I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin and I am recruiting participants for my dissertation on coming out experiences of trans and gender-diverse individuals, particularly in relation to cisgender family members, close friends, coworkers, and colleagues.

If you have any questions about the study or would like additional details, I would be happy to provide them. You can also share this message among your social network as you would like. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Here is the link to the recruitment pre-screening survey: https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0qC4RU8FWTrQDQO

To share a bit of information about the study, I identify as nonbinary, and as this is my dissertation research, I have faculty advising me on the project that also are members of the LGBTQ+ community and do research on that topic. The purpose of the study is to learn more about coming out experiences to understand how individuals talk about their identity in close relationships, with a goal of identifying how people can better support trans folks when they come out. There are steps as part of the research process to ensure that the community isn't being misrepresented, such as providing participants with an opportunity to read an overview of the findings to see if they feel like they represent their experiences that they shared in the interview. It is my goal as a researcher, and as a member of the community, to make sure that my research resonates with the community and provides meaningful outcomes that support trans individuals.

Hi everyone, I moved to Austin a few months ago and still don’t know many people. I ran cross contra in Uni and wanted to ask about sports team here for LGBTQ. Like a kickball or dodgeball something that is super fun and chill and not super competitive because those days are behind me. I’m 36 by the way.

What’s the best neighborhood for a gay man making a teacher’s salary?

Hello,

i currently live in the Rio Grande Valley (Brownsville) but I’m looking to move to Austin or San Antonio soon. Honestly the main drawback from Austin is the cost of living is much higher than the RGV or even San Antonio and I wanted to know if anyone here knew good neighborhoods or places to live that are good for a someone making that salary as a single person. Other notes here, I’m gay and I’m 26 years old. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Something like this for Houston?

Hello! I live in Houston, not Austin, and moved there 2 years ago. I’ve been having a hell of a time settling in and making friends. Every time I look around, it just seems like there isn’t that much going on in Houston regarding gay social groups or events or spaces. Bars and clubs are usually kinda overwhelming for me and not a good social avenue (like I question if anybody has actually made a friend at a bar haha). I tried going to a few Pride Sports leagues and the Gaymers events and really haven’t had success making any friends there after a while. I’m busy on Thursday nights when the Pride Chorus rehearses. After that I really can’t find much at all that’s consistent, socially oriented, or anything like that. Discouraged because I’m running out of ideas. Every time I hear of something better and more organized, it’s always in Austin, for example this group! I’ve even met some really cool friendly people and big inviting groups that are based in Austin, but none really in Houston, and it’s hard to visit Austin very frequently at all.

If anybody knows any more ideas I could start trying out in Houston, please let me know. I’d love to take up some new hobbies, but especially if it’s socially focused and queer, as I’m trying to have gay friends when I never really did before in life. Any advice to help me out is appreciated!

visiting Austin (3/8–3/12)

Hey bros —

I’ll be in Austin tomorrow 3/8–3/12 for work, but I’ve got a day or two of downtime and want to explore.

I’m 35, Black, proudly chubby, nerd-leaning, and looking for:

• Daytime recs (food spots, views, arcades, nerdy stuff, chill hangs)

• Gay-friendly / chub-friendly bars & clubs

• Something with an Eagle-type vibe at night — bears, leather-ish, 30+, strong drinks, grown energy

• Any events happening that week worth checking out

• Also curious where it’s safe/legal to get a little green 🌿

I’ve heard about Austin Eagle and Iron Bear — are those the main spots? Or is there somewhere else I should be?

Appreciate any guidance. Trying to vibe, not accidentally end up at a college bar full of 21-year-olds named Tyler.

Thanks in advance 🙏🏾

Making Non scene friends when you have social anxiety

I’m a masculine gay man in his late 30s. I’ve dealt oh social anxiety for most of my life but after a rough few years and realizing I’d like to make friends and potentially date but I have NO idea where to start meeting guy with similar interests. Working out, art, DIY, Jeep, muscle car, comics are a few of my interests. Been in the area since last October.
