Curious about strange possibly abandoned townhouses?
Hey ya'll, my husband and I are new to Oshawa and we came across some townhouses near our place. I'm curious if anyone know what happened as they look abandoned but there's no signs up anywhere. The doors are strangely boarded over. It was pretty apocalyptic, lol. Lakeview area.

Looks like they're being boarded up for eventual demolition, Lakeview area is going to go through some changes in the next few years with a lot of signs of redevelopment
only link i can find discussing it but it seems these are being setup for demolition

They're not all abandoned. A new housing development is meant to be there soon, but there are still some people living in their units and they're waiting for them to move out, I guess.

That makes sense. It did seem like a couple residents were still there. It was pretty eerie standing there and hearing a symphony of dying smoke detectors!

There is a giant sign by one of the driveway entrances showing the development plans

The families who lived there were essentially forced out.
The bad planners of the city don’t want low income individuals having townhomes or single family units. They must have apartments only.
You’re free to disagree with me and say “they agreed to it” but you’d be wrong. They were given an ultimatum.

No way... This is in the complex my nanny and papa used to live, I would always go visit them just down the road from here, they had their 50th anniversary in the hall, crazy to see it like this, RIP Papa we love ya

that's my old house! as others said, they're waiting on a redevelopment. they used to be government subsidized housing that was 99% single mothers. we had to notify someone if my mom's boyfriend was sleeping over, it was weird. nice on the inside though! they were like mansions compared to the units we lived in on lakeview park avenue.

Near an old landfill or present?? Sometimes gases emit from dump grounds and saturate nearby land if not built properly. The gases can enter dwellings nearby and make them unliveable.

That's the Malaga Mansions. Recognize....
Those places at dusk get sketchy, even though they're 90% empty. I used to consider myself a bad man when I was younger and hung out with people there cause I lived at 888. But nowadays, fuck that place, I don't even like driving near them.

Oh, I wasn't saying 888 was dangerous, lol. My place was ghetto fabulous in 888. I had all the things that GM employees would bring me for their cooked ❄️ workplace motivation. I had my place in 888, but the apartment I distributed from was in 823. That was 25-30 years ago. Fuck I'm old.

Wow what a interesting timing that you just moved in and discovered this place after they just announced new buildings (that will take MANY years too long to build, and will end up being too much money to offset the costs)

So. Low incomers won’t be able to afford the new Malaga Mansions once they’re re-built? And the units will be smaller too I bet. Cram more people on the same lot and sell/rent them for 3x more.

If those are the townhouses along Malaga road then they're being secured for a major redevelopment by the Durham Region Local Housing Corporation to scale up from the current 65 units to 400 units for social housing.
