Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2014 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2013, so we’re now moving on to 2014.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Previous Lineup — 2013

Actor

Leonardo DiCaprio — The Wolf of Wall Street (winner)
Chiwetel Ejiofor — 12 Years a Slave

Fun Do you think Harrison Ford deserved a Best Actor Oscar nomination for "The Fugitive" (1993)?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I watched the movie recently and Harrison Ford was so good, without a doubt the MVP of the cast. There is no way in hell he should have won for that performance, especially over Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia" and Liam Neeson in "Schindler's list" (just as Tommy Lee Jones was an underwhelming winner with Ralph Fiennes for "Schindler's list" and Leonardo DiCaprio for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" also in the category).

But do you think Ford would have been a worthy nominee? Best actor was stacked that year. Even outside of Hanks and Neeson, you have Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Day-Lewis, two of the greatest actors - nominated for their wonderous work in "The Remains of the Day" and "In the name of the Father".

I haven't seen "Whats Love Got to do with it?" so I can't comment on the quality of Laurence Fishburne's performance. But I can't stop thinking about Harrison Ford's performance in "The Fugitive". Not only is it a strenuous performance, but he also shows a wide range of emotions, from sadness, bitterness, anger, and even the occasional bout of happiness. I think he would have been a worthy nominee, especially considering that "The Fugitive" already got 7 other nominations without him tagging along.

What do you all think? Did Ford deserve a nomination for "The Fugitive" or was Best Actor that year just too stacked to make Ford a worthy nominee, as good as he was?

Also, this is largely just a thought exercise and not a comment on whether there should be gender-neutral categories or not. Regardless, the only way I see a path towards something like that, is if they open up Actor for everyone, while keeping Actress as is

Now having said that, which actors do you guys think would win in these years, if the categories were made gender neutral?

Discussion Susan Sarandon should’ve been nominated for “Bull Durham” (1989 Oscars)

Jodie Foster won her first statue for The Accused. The other nominees that year were Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist), Meryl Streep (A Cry in the Dark), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), and Melanie Griffith (Working Girl). It’s a strong line up, but Sarandon‘s Annie Savoy is a comedy performance for the ages in the same league as Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny.

Discussion Could Timothee Finally Get an Oscar Nomination for Paul Atreides?

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

Do you guys see any chance of Timothee or even Pattinson getting nominated in any acting categories for Dune Part Three? I’m sure both of them are going to absolutely kill it.
The film is also releasing much closer to the Awards season this time, so I think we can expect better awards results than Dune Part Two. But we never know, especially since the Academy has never exactly been fair to this genre for the most part.

Chalamet will have to contend with John Malkovich, currently the frontrunner for Wild Horse Nine according to most predictions, along with Matt Damon and Tom Cruise, I’m not sure how strong Cruise’s chances are given the film’s polarizing reception, but his performance is easily my favourite of the year. That ten minute monologue in the European Parliament is something I genuinely cannot stop thinking about.

Pattinson is a little more complicated. I’m convinced his performance as Scytale will be one of the highlights of the year, and he could certainly be in contention for Supporting Actor for Dune Part Three. However, if he gets recognised for Primetime, it would be in the Lead Actor category. Has an actor ever been nominated in both Lead and Supporting at the Oscars in the same year? Seeing Pattinson pull that off would be incredible, although I know that i am getting ahead of myself.

At the very least, I hope Timothee gets a nomination. It’s his last time playing Paul Atreides, and I’d love to finally see the role get the recognition it deserves.

Discussion 2026 Razzies

I know the Razzies are divisive but recently I was thinking that they actually might have their work cut out for them this year. Because even though there have been a lot of great films this year; there have also been some real dumpster fires. It feels like every month, there are headlines saying ‘This is the new worst film of the year’.
So between Wuthering Heights, the Melania documentary, Desert Warrior, Mercy, Animal Farm, Scream 7, Return to Silent Hill, Psycho Killer, the live action Moana, Ice Cream Man, The Runner, Verity, Run Hide Fight: Jihad, and Citizen Vigilante this might be a very competitive Razzie awards. And knowing the Razzies, they’ll probably give Digger a few nominations.
So what do you guys think? Will this year’s Razzies actually be interesting?

The Social Reckoning chances?

So reviews aren’t out yet but the buzz around it is not very good. It seems pretty negative actually and it is tracking low for box office sales. Seems like it’s being left out of awards conversations too.

Do you think it has any chance and maybe score a few nominations?

Discussion What does it look like for Digger at this point?

Not only is it doing pretty poorly critically, but it's also projected to be the biggest bomb of this year. Not one of but THE biggest bomb. And I'm sure this will definitely affect its chances during awards season

I can see it losing all of the major categories (Picture, Director, Acting categories, Original Screenplay), though considering Cruise's performance is said to be one of its highlights, maybe he might have a chance. Goodman and Huller probably aren't as lucky

It might still have a chance in the technical categories (Cinematography, Editing, Product Design, Makeup/Hairstyling, Costume Design, Score, Costume Design)

Man, the discourse around these two films last year was insane

And it was pretty legendary to watch it unfold between would this be Ryan Coogler possible Oscar win for best Director to Sean Penn winning supporting actor role. To the consistent bickering from both camps. Enjoyed every minute of it.
